You guys never mentioned that LOST is a wrestling show.

Now that you mention it, I think everyone who goes to ZombieLocke's side should have to wear a black t-shirt with "mIb" on it, and get new entrance music.

Also, while we as the audience have the context of everything else that's happening to every character, the characters themselves do not -- other than knowing that Locke is back and seems to be different, how are they supposed to know that he's considered "evil incarnate"? He's actually been somewhat charming and reasonable in many of his conversations with the characters now aligning (or considering aligning) themselves with him.

The problem is that EVERYONE KNOWS HE'S DEAD.  Sawyer said so, and Claire knows its not Locke.  He sees Locke, doesn't care that he was dead, follows him to a cave where he shows him names on a wall and now he'll follow him to the ends of the Island.  Even if they don't know he's evil incarnate, they should at least have a clue that maybe this dead guy might be up to no good.

Though it is The Island -- maybe they've gotten over their shock and are feeling like it's not completely out of the range of reason for someone to come back from the dead, since so many other amazing things have happened. Also, again, he's been reasonable with many of them so far -- just because he's someone else doesn't mean he's bad (at least in their eyes).

Sorry, ABC.com is NSFW so it's on my ignore list.

How can you all be sure that the man in black is evil incarnate? Maybe he really is the good guy who wants to free everyone and Jacob was really the bad guy. After all, all we have really seen of Jacob is he and his followers being manipulative jerks all the time. The men at the temple kidnapped all the children who survived the crash, as well as many of the tail section people, such as Cindy, who now appears to have been brain washed. Also, seems Jacob is in the habit of giving people hard choices and not allowing them to ever leave the island again (such a Doogan not being allowed to leave the island in exchange for his son's life). If you ask me, the "good guys" really are not all that great. If fact, we've seen and heard all of them doing far worse things than we have ever seen Darth Locke or his followers do. Keep in mind, the side you are now calling good have consistently been the bad guys for the majority of the shows run.

In fact, Rousseau was the only character I can think of that may have been under his influence since the beginning of the show, and while she had some mental stability issues, she always seemed far better intentioned than any of the island's other inhabitants, and more helpful and friendly to the castaways to (other than that the time she kidnapped Sayid and later Aaron).

Not saying I am convinced that this is how it is going to pan out, as I am actually feeling mostly certain that Jacob's side is suppose to be the good side. But looking back and putting it all in perspective... these "good guys" are complete bastards, Jacob included.

I was just thinking back to Season 3, when Ben was telling Jack and co. that the Others were the good guys -- and our response was "yeah, right".

It'll be really interesting to go back when the series is over and look at those scenes, knowing what the sides really were.

Also -- where do you think Widmore fits in with all of this?

Author
Time

I am afraid the Widmore thing may be part of the over all story that they deem was already explained.

He lived on the island, had to leave the island, and has been obsessed with getting back ever since. I have a feeling his little rivalry with Ben which at one point seemed like it might perhaps be the biggest part of the Lost puzzle, will be down played to a fairly simple rivalry between two powerful men.

Maybe I am wrong, I hope I am. With this whole white vs. black thing going on, I have a hard time seeing how they are going to get around to explaining the Widmore thing beyond that.

The problem is this show spent way too much time building up mysteries, making everyone think the tiniest little details were important... and well, I am pretty sure all those folks obsessed with watching every episode a minimum of three times just to make sure they didn't miss any important details (such as a crate of oranges from a Kate flash back which supposedly took place in 1993 bearing the date 2006! *Gasp!* that definitely has to be of some significance to the mythology of the island!) are absolutely going to hate this show and mourn the time they wasted on it when all is over and done.

If they really do want to explain all the little things, like the Bible and glass eye Mr. Eko found, or the reasons the film strips were spliced, etc. then they will probably have to use a BSG style catch-all such as "That was Mr. Smokey manipulating things and trying to lead the castaways to discovering the islands secrets! He let the polar bears out, he made the Hurley bird say 'Hurley', he made the birds come to Walt, he made Walk appear 'Where he was not suppose to'..." Well, at least this show is still a hell of a lot more interesting than BSG was in its last of days (as much as I loved watching long drawn out scenes of Adama balling his eyes out while in a fetal position on his bathroom floor every other episode...).

Did you see Tuesday's episode?  DL shows up to the temple, a place where people are seeking refuge, offers a "join me or die" ultimatum and then proceeds to kill everyone still there.

Wanton Murder is pretty bad in my book.  Pretty hard to forgive.

Yeah, but didn't the 'good' Others genocide the Dharma Initiative?

It would help if we could survey everything that has been done in the name of Jacob and Evil Incarnate Guy so far. Of course, we can only measure what's happened on the island - we have no way to measure their impact off the island.

Exactly what TheBoost said. We saw the smoke monster lash out and kill a bunch of people, but we've also seen Ben under the orders of Jacob do the exact same thing. Maybe the temple people were evil and needed to die?

We might suppose it was under the order or Jacob.  No one's really sure they've seen him after all...

So I finally decided to start watching and am like 1/3 way through season 1. I'm really loving it so far. It's a great show, I heard there'll be some pretty crazy twists though so I wont post in this thread anymore for fear of being spoiled :)

You stole my idea!

I wouldn't worry about posting.  Just post nonsense that has nothing to do with the topic, and don't read any legitimate posts, and you won't get spoiled.  Works for me!

Yeah, the show is definitely a lot more fun if you can avoid being spoiled.

I've been thinking about this flash-sideways stuff since watching "Dr. Linus" this morning, and I have a theory. Maybe the flash-sideways is showing us WHY people are choosing the sides they way they are. Showing us that under different circumstances, people would me making similar choices to what they are doing on the Island.

For example, given different circumstances, Sayid would still be a killer for Nadia's sake.

Ben, given different circumstances would sacrifice his power for Alex (weird when she's just a student at his school [Side note: Rousseau never crashed on the Island, and is still perfectly sane living in LA. Does anyone else want to see how she would have ended up as much as I do?], and not his adopted daughter). Which is a major shift from his choices on the Island, but justifies why he would want to try to do the right thing currently.

Kate, given different circumstances, would still follow Claire around wanting to take care of her and her baby (that one is a stretch, but she's following the evil people around).

Jack, given different circumstances, would still want to be the best leader he can be.

Locke, if he wasn't dead, would have lost faith (does that even count?).

From that point of view, maybe it makes sense? But it doesn't change that these still aren't our characters. The characters we know were shaped by the Island at every turn, these haven't been.

I'd also like to point out that Ben was still shot and saved by the others, and people were told that he wouldn't be the same after that. AltBen went through that experience, while evidence shows that BenPrime very likely DIDN'T (judging by normal time travel / alternate universe theories).

ADDENDUM: About the AltBen/BenPrime thing, I'm just going by the "normal" "time travelers create an alternate timeline" idea, which the writers deny. But we've got TWO timelines, one where the Losties are displaced in time and set off the bomb, which apparently doesn't happen in the Prime timeline because the Island is still there. However, there is still evidence that the Losties were displaced in time in the Prime timeline (ZombieLocke giving Richard the compass to give to RealLocke, the picture shown to Sun with the Losties in DHARMA, people referring to the "Incident", and so on). I'm just thinking out loud here, so the contradictions are intentional. It's very likely that both Bens forgot getting shot and were "changed forever" and "lost their innocence", and maybe that's part of what the AltLine is showing us. Maybe that Ben can overcome his badness without having to learn from his mistakes that he can't take back...

Apparently Widmore wanted more than to simply return to the island. He and his submarine goons will undoubtedly hook up with EIG and Sawyer.

Good point.  We still don't know enough about Widmore to truly gauge him though.

I'm glad Widmore is back -- I told you they hadn't forgotten about him! (Well, maybe I didn't exactly say that, but . . .)

Also, what are you meaning "EIG" to stand for, v_f_p?

Author
Time

Yes, that's what EIG means. I don't like calling him Locke because he's not Locke, but he was called Evil Incarnate in the previous episode IIRC, hence my acronymic stylings.
