I'm bored to death by this season so far. Trying to keep my expectations low.

I was kind of disappointed that "SUNdown" wasn't about Sun (while "LOCKdown" was about Locke).  Really doesn't matter.

Interesting that the lines have been drawn, and who is on each side.

On one side we have:

ZombieLocke/Smokie/Esau/Man in Black/The Man Outside
Sawyer (Candidate 15)
Claire
Sayid (Candidate 16)
Kate?

On The Others side:

Jack (Candidate 23)
Hurley (Candidate 8)
The Kwans (Candidates 42)
Ben
Lapedius

Basically, all of the characters I don't care about are on the Evil side, and all of the characters I like are on the Good side.  Yay for me!

I still think I am enjoying the direction this season is taking. I at least see the potential for a far more interesting explaination of things than BSG's "GOD DID IT!" catch all ending.

And here I was thinking this morning, "At least BSG had a better ending season." ;-P  The new question/answer ratio needs to go up DRAMATICALLY in these last 10 episodes.

So, I'm still not feeling it.  The on-Island stuff is OK, but the flash-sideways stuff brings up too many new questions/storylines that they have no time to resolve them all.  I'm very eager to see how it all ends without disappointing us all.

Yeah, Psycho Claire is really interesting. A lot more interesting than her previous self. Considerably less hot, however - but of course, evil is ugly, right?

In other news:

  • Jin and Sun are off my radar. I don't care if they get back together or not.
  • Terry O'Quinn is fantastic. Just when it seemed as though he had hit all the right notes with Hapless Locke and Awesome Locke, he's just as good as Evil Locke.
  • Speaking of TOQ, is he not a dead ringer for Harvey Korman? And does Naveen Andrews not resemble Brian from Family Guy if he was neither a dog nor a cartoon?
  • With Evangeline Lilly's hipsless, dudeesque figure and considerable muscle tone, it actually looks convincing when she threatens physical violence. She's one of the toughest dudes on the whole island.
  • I watched this week's episode on-line. I'm going to keep this up until the end. Watching on live TV last week sucked.

I hated Hogun.

He was living in the same building as the Losties. They probably had breakfast together. Why didn't he just take a few minutes and actually explain the situation? It was always "You have to trust me."

I'm glad he's dead.

That's why I'm feeling more and more like they're related more tightly than we think. My current theories are:

1) It's all one timeline, we're just looking at two different sections of it (like in Ji Yeon, with the simultaneous flash-forward/flash-backs. They all go back to the island in 2007, and end up where they are now, but they just took a different path to get there. As Eloise pointed out to Desmond, the universe has a way of course-correcting.

2) The two timelines complete each other. This thinking came from this excellent blog post, which references quantum entanglement:

"Quantum entanglement, also called the quantum non-local connection, is a property of a quantum mechanical state of a system of two or more objects in which the quantum states of the constituting objects are linked together so that one object can no longer be adequately described without full mention of its counterpart -- even if the individual objects are spatially separated in a spacelike manner."

Intriguing.

3) After last night's episode, I'm wondering whether The Man In Black is going to force the integration/crossover of the timelines. When he was offering Sayyid the opportunity to get back what he wanted -- was he offering to bridge the timelines and restore Sayyid to his "current" state in the new 2004 timeline?

Thoughts?

Yeah, Nadia may be dead in your timeline... but we've got another timeline with another Nadia!

Will Sayid have to choose to switch places with the other Sayid?  The epitome of selfishness...

The season is 1/3 over.  They better get moving.

I'm having hard time believing that Sayid, Claire, and Sawyer would actually join the Dark Side of their own free will.  Yes, I know that they've all lost the person they cared for most in the world.  Yes, I know that they blame people on the other team (Sayid blames Ben, Claire blames Kate, Sawyer blames Jack) but would they seriously trade-in their immortal soul?

My wife reminded me that Claire and Sayid have been affected by the Man in Black and maybe they're not fully in control of their actions- maybe they're not all there, really.  I guess something like that is

1) required to make me believe that these people would make these kind of decisions
2) LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME.

It's just like any most other characters that turns to the Dark Side long term- The moment they actually turn the corner rings a little false.

Especially Sawyer.  He's been such a good egg- responsilbe leader of the 1974 Losties for 3 years.  The "badboy" image he tried so hard to cultivate after the crash (and probably before) was a charade and once Kate and others forced him to reveal his true noble, yet tortured and a bit misguided, character... he's been one of the good guys.  Yes, I know Juliet's death would have been hard on him.  Yes, I get that he, in a moment of rage, would take it out on Jack.  But I can't see him joining MIB, or taking more permanent action against Jack and the "White team".

(Also, when Dogan told Sayid that his scale had tipped to "evil" it reminded me of the Treehouse of Horror episode where the Crusty doll tries to kill Homer because it was accidentally switched from "good" to "evil.")

If they don't believe in the concept, then why not? None of those three strike me as religious people. Well, Sayid was attending mosque, but that may have been part of his cover.

My wife reminded me that Claire and Sayid have been affected by the Man in Black and maybe they're not fully in control of their actions- maybe they're not all there, really.  I guess something like that is

Well, it's been established that pregnancy/motherhood doesn't go well with the island. Sayid was dead for two hours - maybe the island brought him back and the island's powers were tipped toward evil because of Jacob's death.

It may in fact BE lame, but the motivation has been shown. What's happened here hasn't been an ass pull IMO.

Sawyer has been the most mishandled character on the show. He was a true dark character from the start of the show, but my best guess is they softened him up for two reasons:

  1. The viewers like the character/the actor
  2. They didn't want lost to turn into some Lord of the Flies type of thing from the start, with Jack leading the good guys and Sawyer leading the bad guys. Looks like it's going to end up that way anyway.

(Also, when Dogan told Sayid that his scale had tipped to "evil" it reminded me of the Treehouse of Horror episode where the Crusty doll tries to kill Homer because it was accidentally switched from "good" to "evil.")

I meant immortal soul in a non-religious way- probably bad choice of words.  I guess I should have said, "go to the darkside" or "become a bad person" or something... maybe even "betrayed themselves" but I went with "trade-in their immortal soul".

They can play with his emotions right up to the finale and I won't care.  If in the end they don't let him find his redemption on the island, what is the point of the whole show?

Not every character will find redemption. That doesn't strike me as plot abuse - in fact, it stands to reason that some will pass and some will fail.

Mulling it over a bit, I see what you mean though. Sawyer's turn back to the dark wasn't terribly convincing. Maybe Jack should have retained more feeling toward Juliet in the buildup to her death, giving Sawyer more reasons to resent Jack. Maybe his action should have led directly to her death instead of he getting dragged down a hole by a chain.

What has the "Good" Side ever done to convince anyone they're good?

They've constantly lied, murdered, lied, hid the truth, engaged in deceit, insisted they should be trusted, tortured, and imprisoned people, all while lying and refusing to tell the truth.

I'd throw in with ZombieLocke if the other option were those douches in the temple.

Yeah, had Jack stood there- able to help her yet refusing to ensure that the bomb went off... that would give Sawyer a little more reason for hating Jack.

And I agree that not every character will find redemption... but I think Sawyer sort of sticks out to me as the character who most deserves it.

You guys never mentioned that LOST is a wrestling show.

Also, while we as the audience have the context of everything else that's happening to every character, the characters themselves do not -- other than knowing that Locke is back and seems to be different, how are they supposed to know that he's considered "evil incarnate"? He's actually been somewhat charming and reasonable in many of his conversations with the characters now aligning (or considering aligning) themselves with him.

The problem is that EVERYONE KNOWS HE'S DEAD.  Sawyer said so, and Claire knows its not Locke.  He sees Locke, doesn't care that he was dead, follows him to a cave where he shows him names on a wall and now he'll follow him to the ends of the Island.  Even if they don't know he's evil incarnate, they should at least have a clue that maybe this dead guy might be up to no good.
