Ideas and Suggestions for :Star Trek The Motion Picture (True Fan Edit) — Page 8

Perhaps you could add a few Klingons wearing the Star Trek 11 leather masks to hide the shame of their as yet uncured Terran look (once a cure was found it may have taken a while for everyone to be fixed and maybe some could never be fully cured).

Nice to know that Angel is watching.  What we really need is a matte for the following:

Do you think you can make two new matte painting type mock-up shots for around the view screen? We only need to change the surroundings in the above two camera angles. I want it to look a bit more like it was Star Fleet HQ, and not the Enterprise rec deck. Also needs to be livened up a bit. A bit to boring, and 1970's looking. Just don't want this room to match the Decker/Ilia rec deck scenes later in the film too much. What do you guys think?

We really just need a different shaped viewscreen and walls, as this room is used later in the movie.  TrekCore has HD shots you could base them on.

This scene is being greatly reduced and altered. All the Epsilon-9 footage seen on that view screen is going to be changed to the bridge viewer. I have it all edited, I just need to make a few more quick changes to some surrounding scenes. This way, you will see just how little of that view screen will be used.

I wish i knew something for Star trek and the original aesthetic you want to achieve there... sorry but i am JJ's generation here.

I really like to help and make mockups because i see the movies from an artistic pov and not from a fan's pov.

Thanks to johnny he brought up excellent artistic skills and and ideas that i admire and like.

Bring it up chief :D

Im looking this topic ;)

Thanks Angel, that means a lot coming from you.

In any case I am liking the idea of having the viewscreen just be floor to ceiling ala Star Trek 4.

I've sourced some more Klingon footage and I'm planning to assemble a leaner and cleaner version of my BOP vs V'ger clip. I might have a tinker today and see what I can come up with.

Fortunately the various Klingon bridges in Enterprise are almost identical, which makes sense for television - unlike the major changes from Star Trek 3 to Star Trek 4 - when it was supposed to be the SAME Bird Of Prey.

Oh and I found my copy of Elite Force but having a listen to the audio it seems that the Klingons only spoke English.

Reading the above has just jared something in my memory. I know this has nothing to do with our edit, but here is a little bit of Trek trivia for all of you.

Did you know that In Star Trek III,  the Klingon woman Valkris wore a leather mask? All shots of the leather mask had been edited out before the film premiered.  There are production photos of her with it on. I think the movie program book has it.  She removes the mask just as she makes contact with Kruge. You can see the bottom of it when she is standing behind the freighter crewmen, and asking them to open communications.

I've seen this somehow.  Maybe in my "read along" copy of Star Trek III?  I remembering comparing the story to the movie when I was small, and wondering why Kirk didn't say "you Klingon bastards" in the story book.  Didn't realize it was a bad word, I guess.

Nothing wrong with a few lens flares when they are appropriate.

How goes the edit FF? - if you guys have got anything yet regarding the lightning effect I'll try to work it into what i'm tinkering with...

I'm still working on the work print. I'm just trying to trim and pace the film with all the footage that is in TMP now. After I do that, you guys take a look and tell me what we should replace with these new effects and footage from outside sources. Then I'll do another work print with all the new ideas and footage we all contribute, and then do the same thing again and again till we have a great project we all like. I know we are going to replace the first attack, so I am going to just mark that area of the film with a place card marker that says Missing Scene or something. Or, I will just use the scene as is with little modifications that you can disregard, as they will be replaced later on.

So far I have the film cut down quite a bit, and I am very happy with how it plays out when I assemble the scenes back together. I want to set up a file share account. I did not do much work tonight. It was a "LOST" night.

Understandable. I'm putting a lot of thought into the early stuff right now so hopefully that all works out well.

If it at least plays like 'star trek' - i'll be very impressed.

Have you put much thought into the prolgue at the moment? I dig the TOS montage idea but don't personally have access to any of that stuff atm.

Anybody working on prologue concepts?

"I love this plan! I'm excited to be a part of it!"  Seriously, this is the part I love about fan edits, especially the attitude of most of the editors here.  We can work together to make an edit we all can enjoy.  It seems like we're on the same page for the most part, so we shouldn't have too many conflicts of interest.  And we have one veto vote with you, so what you say goes.

I would, but I only have TOS on Blu-ray and no way to rip it.

I have TOS Remastered on standard.  Make up a list of what eps are needed and I can rip them and get discs in the mail.

I wouldn't ask you to do that for me for mockups, but maybe if FF doesn't have access to them for the final version.

EDIT: Speaking of the intro, I like the idea of using the opening of the series theme (you know, the part that the captain talks over) during the new footage, either repeated or stretched out.  I love that music, and feel that it needs to be used more in the movies.  We could even start out with the TOS version, and move into the TNG version to fit better with the existing TMP credits.

EDIT2: Might as well let you know what episodes will eventually need to be digitized:

  • Amok Time (Spock brooding in his quarters with his harp)
  • The Omega Glory (Shots of the empty hallways, engineering, and sickbay)
  • This Side of Paradise (Shot of Kirk walking onto the empty bridge, shot of people lined up to use the transporter, shot of Kirk packing his suitcase, maybe shot of Uhura leaving Kirk on the bridge earlier in the episode)
  • Tomorrow is Yesterday (Shot of Enterprise in orbit around Earth, the one without the moon since you can see the stars THROUGH the moon they just pasted into the second identical shot)

I say use the the ST11 ending credits theme or the Horner theme instead of the Goldsmith theme. The Goldsmith theme is just too associated with TNG at this point IMO and it felt weird getting this new theme and then changing it again with ST2, only for it to re-emerge later.

Author

I really don't know how that would fit..I'd be open to suggestion but I would suggest sticking to Goldsmith stuff.

re: the Prologue - what about just keeping the existing prologue music? Other than that I agree that it should probably be something associated with the show, It should be an impressive reveal when the movie theme begins.

it felt weird getting this new theme and then changing it again with ST2, only for it to re-emerge later.

Well, it WAS the Motion Picture theme that later got reprised elsewhere, just like the title fonts, not so much a definitive "this is what star trek is now" theme.

That said i've been tinkering with rebuilding a version of the intro and Klingon theme from TMP using more recent cues [mostly from star treks 5 and 8] - I'm attempting to keep it as close as possible to the TMP version.

I love the Giacchino version of the TOS theme, but I think its too off from the rest of TMP.  Also, the main theme is repeated in TMP, so replacing it at the beginning would make it "re-emerge later" in the same movie!  LOL

RE: Johnny: RE: The Prologue: are you suggesting we replace the Road Show intro starfield with the TOS footage?  Maybe in a shortened version, as I doubt we can show 3 minutes of TOS and not have people recognize it.  I do like the idea of the prologue coming where the Road Show intro does, before the Paramount logo even...

Interested to hear your recreation of the old music with the recent cues.

I've heard an orchestral version of the TOS theme someone used in a mod for Elite Force, but I have no idea where it's originally from.

Where were you in '77?

I'll check out those eps.

Regarding integrating the TOS theme, I found something that could be very cool.  I have an audio book collection of "Enterprise: The First Adventure", "Final Frontier" and "Strangers from the Sky".  In addition to the three books, Shatner does a five minute or so introduction to the collection.  In that intro, he does a very reserved spoken version of the TOS speech with very subdued music under it.  It's a different and interesting take on the  opening...familiar, yet with that "tired" feel to it. I'll whip up an audio clip of it later tonight.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

There is a great orchestral version of TOS theme (and suite from "The Cage") on a CD called "Time Warp" by Erich Kunzel conducting the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. It also contains a cover of TMP theme/Klingon battle that is excellent.

And, I own it. *grin*

OK, tell me what you think.  I whipped this up in Audacity as a proof of concept.  I had to chop up the vocals to get the pacing to match so I copied and pasted in bits of the undertone to smooth it out, but didn't do any audio finagling otherwise.  I cut the TMP theme short because I didn't make any changes after that point...the test is for integrating the speech and TOS theme.

http://www.zizolfo.com/ff-trek-theme.mp3

The vocals are from the aforementioned audio book.  The TOS theme is the season 2 version from a 3 disc set of TOS episode soundtracks and the TMP theme is obviously from that film.
