Ideas and Suggestions for :Star Trek The Motion Picture (True Fan Edit) — Page 7

How about simply 'To Boldly Go'?

I consider this to be a front-runner for the title of the twelfth Star Trek movie but I honestly believes it fits the ethos and ambition of this fan edit of TMP. After all, the new, refitted Enterprise challenges a machine that has literally sampled and recorded the Universe around it, akin to meeting a silent but polarising God-like figure.

Many, many people who aren't even fans of the show could easily give a quick snippet of the opening monologue and 'To Boldly Go' seems to be the defining moment.

hmm, they kind of already did that for Star Trek 5 - "...The Final Frontier"

The last version looks great. The "pinkie" version almost like the Nexus from Generations

The last is excellent, though frame sampling, slowing down the footage slightly and tweaking the upper grilles to make them smaller is needed.

How much raw footage is there from that episode?

I've ripped scenes from a handful of episodes. There are quite a few shots but many aren't really of use without a fair bit of compositing, if you look closely I've painted out the enterprise in the shot above.

If FanFiltration is satisfied with the direction of things I will look at building any specific shots from various elements.

The major issue is that a lot of shots don't run for very long, but there are one or two sweeping shots.

The "pinkie" shot is directly from Enterprise. It's not a creative choice, just a source we are considering using.

tweaking the upper grilles to make them smaller is needed.

I wouldn't be too concerned about that, by the era of the motion picture this ship is a relic. Any inaccuracies could easily be explained away - I'm not trying to pass of a 22nd century BOP as a 23rd century BOP. not ATM anyway.

I do appreciate the feedback though. And if you guys have other ideas, let's hear them...

TNG set the precedent that older starship classes are still in service, so the Klingons probably have old ships out there too.

Where were you in '77?

Well I've got about 25 min of scenes edited and placed in order so far. These scenes are only rough tests, but give a great example on the pacing and content of the dry dock and launch sections. Johnny Ringo has done a great job on some tests for the opening scenes, and my footage picks up Just after Kirk comes on board, and runs up till they are about to arrive at the V'ger cloud. I'll try to get links to these tests out to you guys in the next few hours. Monday night at the latest.

Sounds great FF, I'll try to finish up the other bits and pieces i'm playing with. Then at least we have a good starting point...

If anyone else wants to take a look at my intro proof of concept, I'll throw it onto youtube for now.  - Just bear in mind this is extremely rough!

EDIT -

Here's a quick and dirty mockup to apply more 'cinematic' colouring to the rather 'television' look of the source footage...

Looks good! What can be done with the dialogue? Get some hardcore fans to record new lines in Klingonese?

maybe, I was hoping to just use the film dialogue but i don't know.

Given that the spoken Klingon in TPM was gibberish anyway, maybe we could simply lift dialogue from elsewhere regardless of context?

Can anyone remember if there were spoken klingon lines in any of the games? specifically something like the Elite force series..

Obviously you wouldn't want to use a very  recogniseable voice like that of Christopher Lloyd.

I have an old game called Klingon Honor Guard.  I'll rummage thru it and see if there are bits of Klingspeak in there.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

A thought occurs - they may be some spoken klingon that we can lift from star trek 11 deleted scenes.

There is a lso a loop of bridge sound effects on the BD [and i assume DVD] menus that might be useful, FanFiltration.

I wouldn't mind taking part in the audio edit, I'm pretty nifty with editing, dubbing and sound reproduction.

Gibberish?  Lifting dialog?  My vote is to put another call out and re-record dialog in Klingon!  Certainly we can find someone on BBS or somewhere who knows enough to give us dialog to fit whatever we want.  It's the most spoken fictional language in history!

I like the proof of concept, maybe a little less "inside the ship".  It'd be awesome to have just a ship entering the cloud and getting blasted, but that would be hard to do with with visuals we have.

Can't wait to see your rough cuts, FF!

When I say that I refer only to TMP - where they made up a few bits and pieces. It wasn't until Star Trek 3 that a language was properly developed.

I'm sure you're right though, there are probably much more people out there speaking Klingon than Esperanto.

Really all we need is some stuff that sounds gruff and guttural - they aren't reciting shakespeare here after all ;)

Well, it would be impossible, otherwise I'd be all for it...

Here is an audio sample of the Klingon language from the previously linked video of the Klingon computer game.

http://rapidshare.com/files/357502006/kling-01.mp3.html

It is a very quick first draft. I've managed to remove a fair amount of the background engine noise without affecting the speech. The air between phrases can be muted and the use of equiliser and reverb to give the speech more of a rumble can be tweaked to perfection.

It shows that within this sample, there is plenty of material to construct viable, crisp and distinct dialogue. Considering the gutteral, confident tones, this could very well be the commanding officer's voice.

My friend wants to try and recreate the lightning effects from the V'ger plasma bolts as it hits a ship.   If his test looks good, we could think about giving something like that a try.

I never really liked that effect but I guess it's worth seeing if it can be done well...

I was thinking about maybe trying to show the crew getting 'digitized' and the ship getting destroyed. There is footage of a BOP breaking apart, although it would need to be composited into the cloud.

Maybe we could take the original idea and add some enhancements, as well as enhancing the d7 cruisers?

Give it a try I guess...

EDIT: That reminds me, If we do indeed show the klingon BOP at warp then the visuals should be comparable to warp effects elsewhere in the film - whether original or enhanced.

Thanks for the PM Polarity - sent you a reply.

Hey guys...I made a matte.

I couldn't find an appropriate shot to mirror this token Star Trek visual...

but then noticed an almost identical bridge shot in a different Klingon themed episode. Long story short, that episode had what i need to I roughed together a quick matte mockup which should allow us to put ANYTHING into the view area easily...

There are at least 2 shots i can think of offhand where this could be useful.

FF, Your frind may find this useful...

one more concept, just for fun...

I wish i knew something for Star trek and the original aesthetic you want to achieve there... sorry but i am JJ's generation here.

I really like to help and make mockups because i see the movies from an artistic pov and not from a fan's pov.

Thanks to johnny he brought up excellent artistic skills and and ideas that i admire and like.

Bring it up chief :D

Im looking this topic ;)
