Sony didn't change their minds. Nintendo screwed them over by showing up with their new gf, Phillips, at a con instead. Well, hell hath no fury like a Sony scorned, so they showed the world by making the PlayStation.

That isn't the story I heard! I seem to recall reading about Nintendo coming home to find Sony on its knees preforming lude acts on two well endowed men of color... or something like that...
