Wait, what? It's never sounded RP to me. It's "upper class" as American accents go, but I'd still say it's American. 

Ben Danger did this little experiment with adjusting the pitch, it's not quite RP but a little more British than mid Atlantic (ala Loyd Grossman and Clive Barker before the throat polyps) :
