If TMP is to match up more with the OS another big problem is the shuttle bay which is much bigger than the one in the OS (it seems to take up almost all of the ship under the saucer and is on a totally different scale).
It doesn't match up to the more true to the OS shuttle bay we see in TFF (perhaps it may be possible to take the design ethos and colour scheme of TMP and overlay it onto the shuttle bay from TFF).
One matte, easily replaced or eliminated completely! Unless I'm not remembering clearly and there's another shot of it.
The actual shuttle bay is not that much bigger. What you are seeing when Kirk enters the ship in The Motion Picture is not just the Shuttle bay. You are seeing most of the lower back half of the ship with all the inner bulkhead separation doors open for cargo loading. In the first image below you can see the shuttle bay from the original series. Under it the Shuttle Bay, and behind are areas of the ship we have never seen before. Some of that area may be the engine room as seen in TOS.
Now below is the re-fit enterprise cut-away. The actual Shuttle Bay area (as seen in Star Trek V) is within the red box I drew. In Star trek V, there is a bulkhead door in the back of the bay that is in the down position, so we can't see the areas behind it like we can in here in The Motion Picture. The area within the blue is where Kirk and Scotty enter the Enterprise from the travel Pod. You can see that looking back from Kirk's (and our) visual perspective on that entry point platform, we are see a huge amount of the lower back section of the secondary hull, not just the Shuttle Bay.
Again I placed the area of the shuttle bay seen in Star trek V, and what was upgraded from the Original series within a red box. All the other ares we see are for shuttle storage and cargo.
When the bulkhead door is up it lets transports enter right into the back cargo area. This info is confirmed in Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise.
You can also see the shuttle storage in the photo below, that is located under the Shuttle Bay.
I just want to say that these are shots I always liked in the film. They give you a feeling that this is a huge ship getting ready. The shot is fast and does not linger to long. It is on of the few shots that are interesting and welcome IMHO.
