You'd be surprised, I can't stand them, you can't stand them but there are plenty of people who love the Gungans as they are (and not just undiscriminating toddlers).
The negative reaction is however largely based on how they are presented rather than the idea of them.
Since ROTJ Star Wars has become more than Human Vs Humans with a few robots and aliens.
Once Ackbar turned up on in the Rebel briefing scene (heck Yoda pretty much opened the door to be honest) aliens in battle became an inevitable feature of the prequels.
If they could be turned into creatures you can believe in they become great assets instead of silly asses.
Anyone who likes Gungans has incredibly bad taste. I don't like surprises anyway. =P
Actually in ROTJ... ummm what about the Ewoks? I also know that some people don't like ewoks but no one really utterly HATES them like most people utterly HATE gungans... lol
The thing is, that the gungans are so ridiculous and retarded it's like having them around is a useless plot point... To write in a use for them solely for the sake of using them cos they were in the movie is like keeping a bad scene for the sake of keeping it cos it was in the movie (like the Jabba confronting Han in Docking Bay 94 scene. Useless overall other than to show that Han really did owe Jabba some credits, it's useless.)
So other than that gungan vs droid battle at the end... what use are they? Furthermore if we eliminate 1 of 4 multiple endings the flow could be even better...
