Correct viewing order of ALL official Star Wars related movies / series ?

Author
Time

I searched for a similar thread, but couldn't find it so sorry if somebody asked this before .

I am one of the persons who have seen only the movies, but this summer I plan to do an absolutely crazy Star Wars marathon, which should include all the SW-related "products", so naturally the question is : in which order do they come ?

What is the correct way how to watch all Star Wars stuff, when I want to include

  • the 6 theatrical movies
  • the Droids animated series
  • the Ewoks animated series
  • the 2 Ewoks movies
  • the Holiday Special (yes, I REALLY want to watch it :-) )
  • the Clone Wars animated series
  • the Clone Wars CG movie
  • the Clone Wars CG TV show

?

Also did I miss something ?

The Phantom Menace

Attack of the Clones

The first disc of Genndy's Clone Wars (Clone Wars Volume 1)

The First Chapter of Clone Wars Volume 2

All of the CGI Clone Wars stuff so far. The Movie would not come first chronologically, as there is at least one episode (The Hidden Enemy) set earlier.

The rest of Clone Wars Volume 2

Revenge of the Sith

Droids

A New Hope

The Holiday Special

Empire

The Two Ewok movies

Ewoks

Jedi

And no, I don't think you missed anything.

I'll just save everyone some time and say the only correct way to watch all Star Wars stuff is:

SW
ESB
ROTJ

Because nothing else is Star Wars.  End of discussion.

(note: I don't believe this myself, I'm just anticipating several pages of similar posts and arguments which have been repeated over and over)

As a rule, I watch movie series in production order, so I have some more perspective. Ever since I saw Jedi before Empire as a kid.

If you count the cartoons and stuff, I'll take my time and get around to them when I feel like it.

Star Wars 1977

The Empire Strikes Back 1980

Return of the Jedi 1983.

The rest of the stuff is just add on material to me its no more canon star wars than any sort of expanded universe material.  Which would include the 1997 and 2004 butchering of 3 classic movies, and those prequel movies.

The elements are their in a sort of static form in the prequels but were not fleshed out.  The success of the prequels hinged on the characterization and portrayal of Anakin in episodes II and III, but ultimately what we got was a bad performance and rediculous point a to point b in the script and utter nonsense and the turn to the dark side made no sense. If the reason to go bad was to save his wife why is his first act to kill her WTF?

She was Pregnant with his child/children and he goes to choke her to death, i'll save you by killing you, lol.

If Hayden's inability to pull off a performance was bad enough with no help from Lucas and the greenscreen backdrop, Padme dies of a broken heart was the most dumb thing ever.

Episode II was just plain bad but revenge of the sith invalidated return of the jedi.  Therefore i must pretend it was not a star wars movie.

Also it makes no sense why he would not kill the emperor for tricking him into such an alliance if his wife died why stick around with Palpaptine.  I would have killed the bastard when i woke up from that operating table and heard him laughing about her death. Oh other than the fact that it was in the script for the other three movies to happen but dramatically it fails to work.

Thanks a lot, guys.

Well I fully agree with you about the prequels and TV shows, I'm a Star Wars fan for 20 years and I successfully managed to ignore their existence, but now (I don't know why) feel like seeing them :-) (Well I DID see the prequels, but never REALLY felt like watching them more than once)

Thanks again

I never saw the 1-6 HD broadcast  so i cannot comment on it.

To me if i must watch the prequels this is the viewing order.

4-6 oot

1-3 prequels typically the theatrical versions which are not dvd quality.

I found that the prequels were a lot more enjoyable as a complete media experience as stand alone movies they fail, Lucas is a terrible writer.  The novelizations which are also unabridged audiobooks, the comics and other fill in the blanks EU.  Which again would not have been necessary if Lucas hired a team of writers on the movies.

Conceptually the prequels are not bad.  Lucas played to his strengths which are primarily the visuals.  The Characters needed to be more well fleshed out.  In the movies they are more vehicles for a concept and Lucas musing on Religion and Politics than they are real characters.

I mean he probably had a very basic outline that said certain characters did certain things.  Lets pretend the outline was 3 pages long, has to create a background story that fits with what we know from the other 3 films and add exposition.

The prequels feel very hastily sketched out, at least episodes II and III are that way.  I know Lucas spent a lot more time on pondering episode 1 and writing its script, which the final result does not show.

I don't agree.

They're prequels, so they have to be watched before the original trilogy.

I'm actually thinking about watching the original trilogy as a proper "intro", and then start with the prequels + Clone Wars stuff, and to end it with the 2004 editions of the OT

Sucks for you if you chose to look at spoilers from 1977-2005.

In all honesty, and this is just my opinion, but I think that's a big part of the disappointment with the prequels. The people in their late 20's/early 30's in '99 had sooooo much more invested in it than people like me who were almost 14 at the time.

I agree with Pittrek. The PT should be watched first or not at all.

There seems to be a disconnect between the two sentences, or am I missing something?

You mean that Darth Vader dad thing?  He's Chewbacca's dad, or something like that, right?

Isn't the correct order:

Star Wars 70mm

Star Wars 35mm

Star Wars Theatrical bootlegs

Star Wars Library 16mm

Star Wars Super8

Star Wars HBO broadcast

Star Wars LD Full Frame

Star Wars CBS broadcast

Star Wars LD Widescreen

Star Wars LD Full Frame Digital Sound

Star Wars LD Widescreen THX

Star Wars VHS Full Frame

Star Wars VHS Full Frame THX

Star Wars Sci Fi broadcast Widescreen

Then, if you want, start the Special Editions...

The correct viewing order is:

1. SW 1977
2. ESB 1980
3. ROTJ 1983

Then, Holiday Special with friends and lots of liquor.
Then the prequels to torture suspected terrorists with.
Clone Wars stuff... too cruel even for that.
Ewok stuff, if you're capable of asking, you're already too old.

Are the droids cartoons even canon anymore? I thought they were pre-empire. I don't remember any stormtroopers and stardestroyers in there.

SW, ESB, ROTJ.

The 97 Special Editions for interesting curios and differences.

If curious then and only then I,II,The Clone Wars, III.

The Holiday Special, Droids, and Ewoks only for the most resilient.

If you are going to watch the PT(which I am not a huge fan of), I'd recommend this order, and you keep all the suprises intact:

Star Wars

Empire Strikes Back

Return of the Jedi (stop right after Obiwan talks to Luke on Dagobah)

The Phantom Menace

Attack of the Clones

Revenge of the Sith

Return of the Jedi (continue on as Luke meets up with the Rebel Fleet)

My reasoning is that you watch SW & ESB and it still keeps the freshness of the original movie without the tainting of the 'saga', ESB is preserved because of Vaders revelation.  The first part of Jedi is all about saving Han, so it keeps the story intact.  Once Luke talks with Obiwan about Anakin, it is then like a huge flashback (TPM, AOTC, ROTS), and then resumes with the final part of Jedi with Luke, Vader, and the Emperor in the throne room, and the rebels trying to save the galaxy.

Ok, I'll make a serious post.

Cap suggested something similar, watching in order 4,5,1,2,3,6.  I've never taken the time to try it out but both suggestions are pretty interesting.

Hmm, then it seems like you're unaware of what the term "prequel" means.  It's a pre-sequel.  It's a sequel that, chronologically, happens to take place before the movie it is following.  Therefore, like any other sequel, prequels should be watched after the movies that precede it.

^ lol...

Ah, the Ewok movies... I remember seeing the first in the theater (I had the firm conviction that at one point the kids say they are from Earth but whatever...). Never bothered to see the second... all the trouble so save the family then all of them but the little girl are killed? Then in recent years GL sticks "Star Wars" on the titles and kind of "canonize" them? eeeeewwwww...

God forbides but given what we see in Phantom Menace, a prequel comedy series centered on Jar Jar is more canon... *_*
