When DS2's superlaser destroyed the MC80 class star cruiser "Liberty" (the first star cruise destroyed), I think the beam should go right through the ship and it's concussive energy of the hit should vape it's escorts (the frigate and the corvette that are next to it) and maybe some starfighters too. I always thought that only one ship got hit and nothing happens to the ships around it was kinda odd and it would show the crazy power of the superlaser.
I see your point and I´m not against it although I don´t think that having the beam "stopping" after hitting the Liberty looks bad; afterall, the imperials would have adjusted it for a small target... On the other hand, if we think about the estimated size of the DSII and how big those laser beams must be... having such a weapon used on a trivial target as a cruiser looks an awful waste of energy... :D
Having the Liberty´s escorts being destroyed as well makes sense; if not the DS laser itself the explosions of the Liberty alone should destroy the corvette and fighters and at least damage the frigate. Actually, back in the day, shockwave damage by nearby exploding craft was one of the few cool additions to the X-Wing Alliance game... And as a somehow related piece of trivia, if editing a mission and have the DSII fire at a Super Star Destroyer in the game, it would oddly take several shots to destroy it; but if the shot went THROUGH the SSD when firing at another target, the SSD would be destroyed immediately, in a way achieveing the effect suggested in Rogue Leader´s post... :)
I have X-wing Alliance... I guess I should of actually played all of it. Did beat X-wing and TIE Fighter. Should really install it and beat the crap out of it now that I have PC that can run it but I need a new stick. =P
Anyway, that's an neat tidbit of trivia. I like it! =D Overall I think a weapon meant for blowing up entire planets would take out any ship at Endor in one shoot if not several ships all at once. In fact the beam should be rather larger as well now that I think about it... I mean you look at one of the individual beams from one superlaser elements in that tunnel and that tunnel is HUGE. When those beams converge at the focusing point of the superlaser that beam form has to be even bigger.
As for the Bothan thing... the actress who portrayed Mon Mothma when reading the line saying "Many Bothans died to bring us this information". She said she felt that the tone was to make note of a great sacrifice this particular group made on behalf of the Alliance. Not single anyone out in a negative way. She had no idea what Bothans were but she understood it was a matter of sacrifice and sorrow for that sacrifice they had made. It was not a stab at being biased. I mean, you can say "many people died in the earthquake in Haiti" for example, but it's not as powerful in all reality as saying "many Haitians died in that earthquake". It draws peoples focus on the particular group to draw an emotional tie of sorrow and is symbolic for drawing strength to help this particular group. The Rebel Alliance is all about such symbols of sacrifice, honor, and loyalty.
I did see the elements for not having Boba Fett in certain scenes and this side story for him selling information to the Rebel Alliance... Umm... I can safely say it's an interesting idea but it's never gonna happen. It deviates FAR too much from the orginal film and I can also blow many holes in this as well from an EU perspective. However, I'm avoiding such an EU contest cos it's not productive. lol... However, it would make for an interesting alternate universe story though. =D
Oh! I wanted to post another idea/wish for B-wings. =D In the b-wing's standard cruise mode the B-wing flies on it's side (like the Falcon). In attack mode the hull rotates around the cockpit as it's s-foils locks in attack position. I would LOVE to see that as the fleet arrives at Endor and a whole bunch of B-wings hulles rotate downward as their cockpit stays stationary and the s-foils lock in attack position. That would be such a stunning visual and accurate to how B-wings operate (first 8 seconds of this video illustrates what the heck I'm talking about):
