Capt. Frink, was Stripes ever considered a great movie? Not trying to be contentious, just curious. Not that threads ever stray or anything. :D
Sgt. VFP, look at some of the other movies that have been listed in this thread. I think some of us (myself included) are stretching the term "great movie" to include movies that are greatly popular or generally considered good by a lot of people.
The main exception being Zoolander, which for some reason is missing from the AFI 100 but should be somewhere around #8.
I really have to disagree with that. Zoolander is a pile of absolute tripe and represents everything that is wrong about our western cultures
the only reason I mentioned it is because for some reason it is popular with my peers
Truth be told the only movies I like ben stiller in is the Museum movies & even then there were moments where I wanted to Slap him

Indeed, Commodore Frink, but I didn't think Stripes rated that highly even in the stretched definition. I could be wrong. Should I start a thread about Stripes?
What do you all think? Stripes thread? Yes or no?
Maybe I should start a thread to see if there's interest in a Stripes thread.

Then I'll mention "Napoleon Dynamite". Perhaps the least enjoyable experience I've had watching something, and I've seen the Star Wars Holiday Special.
Another highly lauded movie that I did not enjoy was "Juno". Ugh.

(sharply breathes in) I've heard people disliking Casablanca, but Vertigo always hurts the most when someone dislikes it....and Kubrick is God.
Kane is unfortunately dogged because it was named "the greatest movie ever" thanks again AFI! Lawrence has to be seen in 70mm. I've only seen it in 35mm and even that blew my mind. 2001 should be seen on the big screen as well. Would be killer to see it in Cinerama! 2010 was more of a mixed bag. Blade Runner changes your life in 35mm. and how can you not like Batman Returns?
disliked (but still enjoyed): Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, Rocky, Schindler's List, Robert Altman films, The Birds, Deliverance, and yes....the Goonies.
LOATHE: Titanic, Terminator 2, The Sixth Sense, West Side Story, Romeo and Juliet (60's version), Saving Private Ryan, Gangs of New York, The Aviator, and The Departed. (What happened to Marty?) The Dark Knight, Apocalypse Now Redux, Juno, and modern comedies of all kinds.
Annoyed by: Forrest Gump, The Sound of Music, To Kill a Mockingbird, E.T.

Oh, and I second The Dark Knight. Ugh.
Thank you to the folks who mentioned Napoleon Dynamite, Forrest Gump, and The Dark Knight. Batman Begins was significantly better than its more famous sequel.
I hate ET.

I can't stand Forest Gump either (it's a pale merging of the much superior Zelig and Being There).
I can't stand anything with Mike Myers (the actor not the masked killer) I'm not even partial to Shrek but it's the least offensively dull.

WHAT!!!!!!!??????!!!!!!!!! you're gonna have to pay for that! *slaps captainsolo repeatedly*
and just how can "To Kill A Mocking Bird" annoy you?
oh Warb, you and your ridiculous city pride. haha.
I'm a native of the city who's been on the west coast all my life, and has only seen the end of Rocky V. This needs to change one day.

Batman 1989
And Batman Returns great movies,lol.
I don't think you can put any Tim Burton film in that category except maybe Nightmare before Christmas or Edward Scissorhands.
I found his batman to be too bizarre, though it was better than shusucker's batman and robin and overrated Forever.
The only Batman films i think are any good are batman begins, the dark knight and the animated film Mask of the Phantasm. Batman 1989 holds some nostalgia and the score by Danny Elfman is great, returns had Michelle Pheiffer as the standout role. The only thing i hate about the first film is the hammy acting of Nicholson you think he going to break into a "here's johhny" and The Prince music is out of place where a symphonic score should have been used. Also The actress who played vicky vale was horrible. That same chick was in never say never again, lol.

Y'all have convinced me. I'm going to give Blade Runner another pass or two.
The Final Cut redeemed the film for me. I bought it to enjoy the visuals, but I didn't think I would end up adding this film to my top 10 list. The original was good, but like a novel that has too much going on, I just lost interest. The editing makes the film more filmy. It cuts out the pointless and keeps the important.
This was the one instance that I liked the Director's cut better than the theatrical.

A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Oh man, Nightmare Before Christmas. That was the only time I've ever fallen asleep in the theatre. Garbage.

Tim Burton has his moments, I just don't see how he is this genius that every pimpled gothic teen makes him out to be. From 1988 to 1999 (excluding Nightmare Before Christmas) he was a pretty good director. But anything since then is just a pointless screen adaptation for people who think still think he can do no wrong. His style hasn't changed, which isn't a bad thing, but his direction is dying. I like to see different, but I wouldn't mind seeing Tim Burton think outside his own box and do something with a good story. It would prove his worth, because I think what he is doing is hiding behind "different" as a way of cloaking his directorial skills.
In a nutshell, Tim Burton is a visual genius, but his stories are always so... awful. These wonderful visuals completely cloak awful plot. Like George Lucas's films of now, one doesn't say "Damn, that was a good story." one says "Wow, that looked good."
It seems to be the basic formula of supposed "artistic" films today. "Let's make them look as good as we can so people don't realize our movies suck."
And also, if he is going to make a screen adaptation, he could at least respect the source material. Though I will say that Sleepy Hollow would have been very boring to do so.
