Some people think Salo is a great film, I have watched and taken positive things away from some dark, disturbing movies in my time but I just found the film pointlessly sick, it didn't tell me anything new about the vileness humans can sink to and I got the feeling that almost everyone involved were just as awful as the characters in the film.

Seven has a similar (though obviously milder) effect on me.

It was essentially a Doctor Phibes film (without the wit or style) dressed up as something arty.

I could just imagine the sort of brain storming session that went into the script writing process.

Having a woman killed by a man wearing a razor sharp strap-on...classy if you keep quoting Milton.

Wolf Creek is also seen as a really good movie (not great in a 2001 sense but a cut above the average slasher flick).

While the cinematography is beautiful and some of the acting talent was top drawer I just found the characters dumb and the film was structured in such a way that I just felt angry and depressed after watching it.

Angry at the writer and the characters for doing all the dumb stuff that wouldn't be out of place in a Jason flick, angry at the director for framing the film like something actually new or daring was going to happen and depressed because it had the sort of boring realism that reminds me of how sick and soul crushing most news reports can be.

Compared to something like the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre which is a grueling experience but also cathartic and broadly tragic and comedic it just doesn't measure up.
