That's freaking amazing! I think I might use that for my ESB: Renascent edit if ady doesn't.

Looks very cool... although I've always liked the fact Cloud City looked a dot in the distance. It's reminiscent of the Death Star in the distance as the Millenium Falcon approaches in A New Hope... "he's heading for that small moon!"... it's this small object in the distance that you only get a sense of the massive scale and detail of once you get up close... and boy does Cloud City do that!

Shameless self promotion...

That was a nice 'Bespin' shot vaderios, but I must agree with Vincent's comment here.  The original 'sunlit' reveal of the small, distant 'Cloud City' was always one of my favourite establishing 'beauty' shots in the movie, I have to say.

I just wonder if and how Adywan will tweak it in any way....

And I agree with the way doubleofive recently described how he always saw the Falcon's arrival as being at 'sunset'....with the events of Leia pacing in the apartment coming during the next day, and everything else taking place up until the Falcon blasted off in the evening....  Interesting that Adywan saw the 'Falcon' as arriving at a 'sunrise', and all the following events taking place on the same day up until the evening....

It will all still look glorious I'm sure.

By the way, thinking about you and your family today Ady.

Coming back around still even ady posted previous shots that indicating the falcon arrives at sunset still like the idea of sunrise :)

I agree. Sunrise would look so much better!

Movement. I'd have to remove the Falcon and repatch the background, then I'd have to use 3DS Max to import a new Falcon, and then using particle illusions add in extra moving clouds that the Falcon could blast through and then add the engine glow.

How about arriving at sunrise while everything is good, and leaving at sunset.  It might help set the appropriate mood.

Yeah I think sunset is much better, it helps with the mood "everyone's arrived and tired, they have to go to sleep and thave heir adventures in Cloud City begin on the next day".

And as for the original shot of the Falcon's approach it's one of these shots you can't replace I think, I'd personally prefer to continue seeing Cloud City in the distance for its 1st appearance rather than a clse-up right in your face, it's less subtle IMHO. And it's a real good shot, even today :)

The problem being that the mood of the next scenes of leading to Threepio getting blasted seem to place it right after landing (no cut away, Leia doesn't change her clothes etc) but they have brighter views through the windows than darker ones.

That's why I've always thought they landed early in the morning.

But does it make any difference?

Dawn and dusk look very much alike and for all we know he city may move around the planet and get to clip the terminator several times a day.

How long is a day on Bespin anyway?

It's not Earth.

Was watching ESB today, and something jumped out at me (which I don't think has been mentioned before). It concerns the scene where Luke is hand-standing and levitating nearby objects, and eventually levitates R2.

What struck me as clumsy was that, in the shot where we get a close-up of R2 being lifted off the ground, once he ascends he then just suddenly stops in mid-air unconvincingly, as if he was on a lift/elevator that reached its topmost level. What I was thinking could help with the believability of this shot, was if R2 could 'dip' a little bit in the air after he is lifted up, to make it look as if he's actually floating and is not just on some platform or supported by something else.

Pedantic, I know. It's funny some of the things that catch your attention in films, though.

Also, I was wondering, what is the game-plan for the Cloud City extended window shots (when Han and co. first arrive, and then when going to lunch with Lando)? Are they being kept, or is the old set being reverted to? I really liked the open-ness those SE additions brought to Cloud City, but I also saw that they caused a lot of continuity errors (one shot featuring the new open windows, the next shot having the old windows, and such).

I think it'd be good if the SE windows could be kept, with the continuity errors somehow fixed around them, rather than going back to the closed-up windows (though I'd encourage removing or de-voluming the new 'lift-noise' in the sound mix that one of these new shots brings; intrudes a little bit too much on the dialogue, I think). Apologies, I know this particular topic has been discussed at length before, but I'm not sure what the final outcome was.

Good point, and seems like it would be fairly easy to do.

Current state of the SE windows are:

Arrival - open window at end of hallway closed due to close up shots later in the scene where they pause on the stairs, using the GOUT tracked on top of the SE (he released a test video at one point showing this).

Lunch with Lando - Ady has stated that he's keeping the elevator window open in all following shots.  Still have no idea how he plans to accomplish this.

Hold on a sec..

When i posted this..

I got corrected by Impfighter I think that the elevator shot is gone to fix the architecture issue..

So whats wrong with this picture?

Nope.  I don't think it was me vaderios, as I remember Ady mentioning that he was actually planning to keep the 'elevator' window look.  Sounds great if he can manage that.  However, there's another, totally different 'open' SE window that has been restored to it's former, original look to resolve a 'continuity' problem.  (there's a comparison shot of it amongst Adywan's preview shots on page 1 of this thread)

But I liked your mock-up of this one too.  :)

I have the strongest possible suspicion that the elevator will not only remain but will corrected in the shots it's missing at great effort and with great effect.

I'm sure someone uploaded a clip with the walls replaced with windows behind the stormtroopers several years ago, but I can't for the life of me remember who it was.

Myself, I like the idea of the Falcon arriving at sunset. I think that because that has always been how it was, it will feel very strange for me to adapt to sunrise instead. It is not only a change in the visuals in this case, but a change to the actual timing of events. For some reason, I just like the lighting and the mood. Of course, it would have helped if Lucas had done a better job with the timeline in the first place. You would think that if they spent the night, we would have been treated to at least one nice night shot of Bespin.

I also like the original reveal shot of Bespin. I agree that seeing it so small and far away helps to emphasize its actual size as they get closer.

Hi all, been monitoring this thread/group for a while now and I swear you watch ESB in slow-mo to catch all these things. You guys rock! XD

Anyway, allow myself to... err... introduce... myself. =D

Name is Ming, I'm a huge fan of Ady's work with ANH:R, and am the lead of Ady's Secondary Film Unit in the US for ESB:R to reshoot some things Ady wants to have in ESB:R. Ironically I actually do have my very own personal group I've dubbed "Rogue Squadron" (est. 1997 ;) ) and so it's further ironic we have the amazing fortune to work with Ady and help him with ESB:R now. I guess you can say it was the will of the Force. ;)

The reason I'm addressing you all now is cos I just recently caught up with the latest messages here and I saw some general interest in the US 2nd Unit and so I thought I'd pop in and say hello (I've had an account for a while actually but never used it... lol). =) I also thought I'd answer any questions you guys have concerning preparing for ground assault. XD

Here's some general information:

#1 We are based in San Francisco Ca. Lucas's backyard! (Was actually at LFL's Letterman center Sunday for a meeting with an old friend =D). California is also known to have over 50 micro climates, so we have all planetary weather terrain's covered for: Hoth, Endor, Tattooine, etc... =)

#2 We're standing by to shoot but due to the delay concerning Ady's unfortunate circumstances we're hoping to target early or mid-March now. (Our thoughts and prayers are with you Ady, Rogue Squadron will be ready when you are. No worries bro.)

#3 I will not go into the exact scenes/details Ady wants us to pick up for him (cos I think he likes surprising you guys. ;) ) but we will be doing elements for no less than 6 different shots and they are all on Hoth. Snow trip for my Rogues. XD

#4 My team is a lil over a dozen people... Along with my Rogues, we have other friends/powerful allies who will be instrumental in pulling this off. Costume designers, prop makers, film makers, photographers, etc etc etc... So rest assured we're not approaching this half-@ssed... lol. No, we do not have the backing of the 501st or Rebel Legion. However, we do have a few real Rebels within those groups who are willing to help me directly. I resigned from the RL last year so they have no jurisdiction over me or my squadron. =P

#5 About me personally concerning SW, I've been involved in so many adventures concerning SW I guess you can say I'm a jaded veteran now (and after that travesty called the prequels who wouldn't be jaded right? =P). My "Bothan" spy network is world-wide and in California, I know practically everyone worth knowing concerning the local SW community including some at LFL (yes, I'm probing some of them concerning their feelings on Revisited... casually ;) ). I am an EU specialist and have near photographic memory when it comes to totally obscure crap concerning the SW EU (I know Ady doesn't give a flying bantha poodoo about the EU concerning Revisited so I don't intend to bring any of that into the forum here. =D). I also love lightsaber combat and kenjitsu and have taught it to others. I have full X-wing gear, Jedi gear, and almost complete Hoth Rebel Solider gear (hint hint ;) ).

Anyway I think that's a good over view and I hope that answers some questions. =) I'll pop in again soon and check in. May the Force be with us all! =D

Excellent spot, topdawg193.

Definitely something that should be fixed. I hope Ady sees your post.

Hoth Solider preview

Please keep in mind that this is far from finished as we're waiting for elements like the vest, backpack, gloves and boots. The gun actually has an accurate looking stalk now comparable to the Blastech A-295 (this is an older picture of the blaster rifle). Working to get the correct tint on the goggles too... 8D

Will post more pics later. =D

Edit: Oh! and as a point of interest, the flash light and laser sight attachment do really work. XD

Ah, that's good to hear; definitely the way to go I think, but man, I'd imagine it'd take some work!

Cheers - I'm hoping, like doubleofive said, that because it'd be an easy enough shot to fix (for someone like Ady I assume, lol, having no experience in this stuff myself) then it wouldn't be too big an ask for the edit.

Ming is here!  There aren't credits big enough for him in this movie.  A whole second unit dedicated to running around in the snow to enhance the movie...  It's awesome to hear about.
