Wait a minute the dudes that pointed out star trek 2009 was a ripoff of star wars.  Those guys are geniuses.Lol.

it was?  it certainly didn't seem that way to me.

yeah, ok I suppose there are similarities.  I guess I just hadn't thought about it too much.

you know, I just had an idea.    I wonder if 3D instant replays might be able to help in officiating sporting events?

As 'Avatar' has just been given it's first dvd/blu-ray release, I thought I'd link to a few 3D-related items here again.

I recently caught my first 'polarized' live-action 2D-3D 'conversion' in the shape of Tim Burton's 'Alice in Wonderland', so I've now got an initial opinion about the process compared to 'Avatar's.  After I've braved the much-critisized 'quickie-conversion' of 'Clash of the Titans' in a couple of days, I'll post some thoughts.

Something that was unexpectedly shown before the 'Alice' showing I saw, was a 3D version of this 'Doctor Who' preview trailer which I'd happened to see on tv the day before.  It was 'converted' it seems, and looked amazingly effective I thought - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpbmMhNe6aA

In the meantime, here's some stuff on the whole 2D-3D thing that I've come across recently -

Here's an interview from someone involved with the 'conversion' of 'Alice' -

Personally, I'm hoping all the completed 'Future Earth' shots are going to be incorporated amongst the 6 minutes extra in the 'extended' version.  They're the ones I'd most like to see -

Here's an idea of what's in store for 'Avatar 2' -

I'm still skeptical of transferring a movie originally made in 2D into 3D.  I think its like colorizing a b&w movie.    I don't want to see this done to old classics.

Well Warbler, it's certainly going to be interesting to see just how many older 2D movies will end up being 'converted' in the next few years, not just for 'theatrical' re-release but for the upcoming '3D blu-ray' format too.

There's plenty of past movies that I'd be keen to see 'dimensionalized', as long as it's not done in a slapdash way.  I guess it comes down to if you like the effect or not.  Personally speaking, the 'conversion' technology amazes me, but like anything else, some companies will manage to do it better than others I guess.  It's still early days though, and things will hopefully improve as time goes on.

I'm especially interested to see how the 'home viewing' side of things pans out eventually, where the 3D format is concerned.

It seems like 'AVATAR' is still breaking records - http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3icc341acc4f9c061e3f5665cc99fe23f2

By the way, as I mentioned in my previous post, one of the upcoming 3D movies I'm most looking forward to is the 'ALIEN' prequel.  Here's a rough idea of what it's going to focus on, that I've just come across - http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2010/04/23/alien-prequel-update-ridley-scott/

whatever they do, they better still keep the original 2D versions available.     I'm not watching Casablanca in 3D, thank you very much.

Here's another comparison between Avatar and (Some other Movie) claiming they are the same.

Still pretty entertaining, though:

Been kinda busy of late, but I meant to add this here about the limited re-release that is currently happening with this, since 27th AUGUST.  I'm disappointed to read that it looks like the 'Future Earth' scenes are still being omitted after all though, and will likely only end up on the longer, 'unfinished' DVD/Blu-ray version  -

There's been a few other interesting developments on the 3D front recently too, and I'll go into them sometime soon, when I can.

Sounds like the re-release hasn't sold too many tickets...

'Never' is a rather silly hard-sell so soon after the original release.

If I'm reading this latest James Cameron interview below correctly, then it now seems that the 'Future Earth' scenes are being incorporated into the 'finished'-quality extended DVD/Blu-ray version, after all!  :)

Unlike the current 'AVATAR: Special Edition' theatrical re-release which has approx. 9 minutes extra, the 'Collector's Edition' DVD will include a version which has approx. 16 minutes extra added...including over 4 minutes worth of the 'Future Earth' opening.  This is bound to be the definitive version, and these 'grimy cityscapes' should make for a dramatic contrast to the lush jungles of Pandora -  http://www.oregonlive.com/movies/index.ssf/2010/08/interview_with_james_cameron_o.html

I'm really tired of this recent 3D craze. It isn't anything to be excited about and is just another way to charge higher prices for tickets.

If you really want to talk about 3D and experiencing a film-then you look to Cinerama.

Instead of 3D and digital projection bring back Cinerama and 70mm.

IMAX just isn't the same. At all.

What better way to bring back 70mm than striking new original prints of the theatrical version of Star Wars .

Can modern theaters simulate the original six track mag setup?  I thought everything was digital now.

As Cameron says, it has everything. Three versions of the movie, family friendly dialog option, feature length making-of, 45 minutes of additional deleted scenes, the ability to watch the entire movie with just the Motion Capture references...

I knew telling my wife not to buy the first Blu-ray would pay off.

You could if you used original equipment. Modern 70mm is done through (run away JediTemple!) DTS 70mm which is an easier way to recreate the original 6 track.
