The thing is who would pay 400.00 us for a laserdisc that has japan subtitles burned in.

There are loads of rips of that laserdisc floating around right?

It has never been confirmed whether or not the japan ntsc laserdisc is from a pal source.

I have heard it was uncut unlike the UK broadcast, but i am not very knowledgeable in these matters

Sometimes people are just insane in some kind of way..

I paid about 180 us-Dollar for the limited japanese DVD Set of Kill Bill Volume 1.

The german "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" Gift set goes about 200 us-Dollars at ebay.

The german "Cujo" Disc goes about 68 us-Dollars at eBay... And: the German Cujo Disc looks like some shitty VHS rip, with only german audio, not saying thats a very, very bad syncro. (Okay, so its something for german with no fun watch a movie in original audio)

Why shouldnt be someone somewhere so insane to buy some LD for about 400 bucks?

Myself I bought the japanese 1997 Special Edition Set of Star Wars.. and I am not even own a LD Player. (Something I'll try to change next year)

Okay.. 400 us for one movie would be very insane... too insane for me... ;)

Pretty sure the Japanese NTSC disc isn't a noob conversion from PAL, but the HK one is.

Well, I edited mine together using the Japanese LD, the Hong Kong LD, and the entire "Zip-a-dee-doo-dah" sequence as released on the ALICE IN WONDERLAND deluxe LD and DVD editions. There are no subtitles on my version, using the Hong Kong LD to replace subbed shots.

Wait, there's footage from Song of the South on the Alice in Wonderland dvd? Which one and where?

I'm interested in the 2 disc copy as well.

Dr M, what process did you eventually come up with to restore the Mentor version to NTSC?

A while ago I bought a Hong Kong DVD which was 29.97fps, hard-telecined with terrible field blending - probably a poor conversion from a PAL source. An AviSynth script called Mrestore was surprisingly successful in restoring it to 25 progressive frames per second.

Mrestore has since been superseded by a new script called Srestore; if you're happy with the current conversion, it's worth noting for future reference. On the other hand, if you feel that the current version could be improved, and you're tweaking the discs anyway, it might be worth considering re-doing the encode.

Could you give to me your avs script to recover the 25 progressive fps?

Does anyone have a source for Mentor's PAL disc?

I'm nearly done (yes after all these years) and I've noticed Srestore has progressed to the point it might be worth doing an update on the video while I'm at it.

I just can't find my source disc. PM me if you can help out.

Ok, subtitles are (probably) finished.  I still need to edit the main menu (adding a subtitle on/off button), rebuild and proof the new disc.

Can anyone provide a 1 minute clip from Mentor's disc (live action scene) so I can test if a new video clean up is worthwhile?

I managed to find SotSRestored24.mpv on my hard drive, which was I think your test sample, but I don't seem to have anything fom the original capture.

I have SotS, but i'm not sure of the source.  How can i ID it to determine if it is Mentor's?

Mentor's original PAL disc was from a DVD recorder. It will have a blue Title List menu with one title that reads "Title 1  27/8 1:34:41" along with a small screencap of a green BBC logo against a blue background.

Thanks.  That's not the one i have.

Wait, what were the subtitles needed for. I thought the goal was to get a version without them (unlike the laserdisc). I'm really confused.

Anyways, I've had an idea. With a US president who's half black and the return to 2d animation from Disney featuring a princess who's also black, it seems like Disney could not have a better time to release Song of the South on video if they really want to. I mean what could they possible wait for now? That being said, they still don't seem interested, even with their Platinum titles being rereleased, so they don't have much new stuff left to offer on dvd.

But I was thinking what if there was a way to pressure Disney or get Song of the South more exposure? So has anybody seen Nostalgia Critic? Do you think he would be up for reviewing the movie and basically pointing out how much it's not racist? I know it's something I can't just force him or anybody else to do and I know some of you are going to say that it would be unwise to tread on Disney. Well, he's already used stuff from the Lion King.

It's just that the Holiday Special used to be some really obscure thing no one outside of Star Wars would have heard of. After his review, I actually brought a copy in for our anime club to give away as some kind of cruel joke. I have never seen people laugh so hard at just seeing a home burned dvd with sharpie ink written on it. (I mean just looking at the disc, not even playing it.) One of the girls didn't even want to touch the case because it made her feel contaminated. It was hilarious.

So back to my point, if some internet reviewer got a hold of a copy and was brave enough to do a video review, it would definitely put pressure on Disney to bring out the movie. Hell, I'm seeing uploads of the full movie in segments on youtube! If Disney isn't going to take that down, then I think an internet review (which could legitimately claim fair use under copyright law) would probably not get in trouble.

@Knightmessenger - I resynced and corrected English subtitles (which will be selectable, not burned in).

Well, I just obtained a copy on dvd (not from anybody here) and am watching it now.

It had the sorcerer Mickey home video logo and then went straight to the movie. The dvd is NTSC or else it wouldn't play on my television. So far there have been no subtitles. Picture quality is pretty sharp and clean, audio is very good but the video does look a little washed out and muted in color.

Based on what I've read from others so far, it sounds like my disc is a straight transfer from the Hong Kong laserdisc. Does anybody know the side changes on the disc so I could easily check if there's a clean transition on my copy?

I had previously made corrections to the second disc with the extras.

Rechecking it now I'm seeing a weird behavior.

Can someone that has disc 2 tell me if every extra after playing exits to the root menu instead of the submenu that you just made your selection from?

Anybody know which version Asylum of Oblivion has?  They list it at a run time of 1:30:43 with no subtitles and video quality of B+ (on a scale of A to F).  Is that a PAL or NTSC run time?

Author

That's the PAL run time. NTSC run time is closer to 94 min.

For anyone interested, I see there was a 700MB Xvid capture of the Japanese LD posted to a.b.movies.xvid 18 days ago.

If you still need it, my upload of the Mentor dvd is still up in my place (thing mentioning that is banned from here now, it's been so long since I've been on).  If you need it, let me know and i'll send you a link.

I've got better things to do tonight than die! - Springer, Transformers the Movie

 (Edited)

So for those that have asked... I did some experimenting with Mentor's release and more modern filters tonight.

Things I did with the original release (for better or worse):

Mpeg2source(...,cpu=6) -- If I remember this correctly.  There was quite a bit of blocking and ringing artifacts.  This also cleaned up some of the mosquito noise.

Restore24 -- to recover as many non-blended frames as possible.  (Restore24 has an internal bobber).

New filters tested:

Mpeg2source(...,cpu=1) -- Just enough to remove the blocks, but not enough to soften the picture.  Lots of other types of compression artifacts were left behind though.

SRestore -- Faster and more up to date recovery of 24 fps.

Yadif -- SRestore needs progressive source and this is the best of the fast filters.

yadifmod(mode=1, order=1, edeint=nnedi2(field=-2)) -- A much better bobber.  My CPU is chiseled out of stone, but with patience it can handle this.

fft3dgpu(sigma=1) -- GPU based version of fft3dfilter.  A better way to clean the mosquito noise.

What did I see?

SRestore pretty much picked the exact same frames as Restore24.  Neither seems more accurate overall.

CPU=6 versus CPU=1?  Blocks are all gone, but mosquito noise and haloing is more pronounced.

Fft3dgpu?  Removes a good deal of the mosquito noise, leaves behind all of the haloing.  Softens the picture to about the same level as using CPU=6.  Pretty much a wash between this and my previous dehaloing/deblocking.

So... not worth redoing under these conditions.

Interestingly it took SRestore() with yadifmod(mode=1, order=1, edeint=nnedi2(field=-2) to generate about the same sharpness of detail as Restore24() did in my previous release.

To sum up: A version 2 would give maybe 10% better detail (mostly because newer deinterlacers are better), leave behind bit more artifacts, create some minor banding (if you look carefully), and require a good deal of work and a LOT of CPU time.

I'm pretty comfortable keeping things as they are.  Stay tuned for the soon to be released v1.1... no really, I mean it this time!  It's finished and everything.

Okay, so I'm posting at myself, but that's fine.  I wanted to give you all an update, and ask for suggestions.

In version 1, I may have used a bit to much post processing in dgdecode.  I think I could have used some deringing, but it's been a while and I'm not sure.

I used Restore24 to get back to 23.976 which uses an internal deinterlacer.

I actually spent a week creating, in pieces, a lossless v2 using yadifmod/nnedi2 with srestore.

The advantages: More modern restoration filter, less dgdecode postprocessing, possibly smoother motion, 10-20% sharper image (thanks to a serious deinterlacer), and a bit less cropping.

The disadvantages: More artifacts including a bunch of mosquito noise (even with denoising), the smoother image is because srestore chose more blurred fields than restore24 (this is most noticeable in animated scenes.)

For a pointless comparison, here are some screenshots. http://www.mediafire.com/?4tsj6g3vejglggj

They don't really mean anything because I only took snaps where the frames were the same.  In most cases different fields were selected so there were no matching screenshots possible.

What might be ideal would be finding a way to disable restore24's internal bobber and using yadifmod/nnedi2 in it's place... but I don't know how much good that would do, even if it's possible.

I think the problem is actually the noise.  If you filter more, the 24fps restoration is more accurate, if you filter less of it, your picture is sharper, but you get more blended fields.

Anyone have a suggestion?  If not I'll just go ahead and release v1.1 (which has the same video/audio as v1).

Anyway, v1.1 has been out for awhile, but I've only had one request for it so far.

v1.1 has the same audio/video as the previous release.

What is new.

Disc 1:

The movie can be resumed if you exit to the menu (previously it would restart from the beginning again).

New English subtitles (tough dang job), selectable from the main menu.

Fan warning has been shortened

Non functional buttons have been removed from the scene selection menu.

Disc 2:

Aspect ratio of Splash Mountain ride-through extra has been corrected to 16x9.

Fan Edit warning again shortened.

Root button problem with Splash Mountain extra corrected.

Button routing within menus are now more intuitive.

--

As far as a v2 is concerned, I'm letting that idea go for now.  I think this pretty much wraps up the set.  I don't think there are any more plans for a Disc 3.  ( If anyone wants to design cover art, that would be great.)

Hello all. This is fascinating that you have this and I would really like to know how I can download a copy.

I also have the bootleg that others posted caps of and have always been disappointed with the quality - but I figured it's the best we'd ever get.

Also, I actually have a 2-reel 16mm print of the film that is terrible.  If someone wants to trade something or just buy it, I'd love to get rid of it. It's just taking up space.  You pay the shipping though ;0)

Anyway, if someone could send me the links for downloading I'd really be appreciative.

thanks.
