I have no emotional attachment to either man or show, but in general I've always found O'Brien funnier.

It also makes it clear, again, that Conan's jabs at Leno - "you can do anything in America, as long as Jay doesn't want to do it also" - really appear self-serving, as well as incorrect. Jay didn't want any of this - he didn't want to be forced off the Tonight Show, didn't really want a prime time gig, and he's not telling NBC to move Conan out of the 11:30 slot. Conan has been less than truthful and unnecessarily snarky through all of this.
I'm not sure whether to believe Leno or not. He may just be saying all this to make himself not look like the bad guy. I find it difficult to believe that Conan went to NBC and said "either give me the Tonight Show or I'll leave" and the NBC chose him over Leno, six years ago. Doesn't make much sense. Then again, not much the network has been doing recently does make sense.

I find it very believable. Besides this article from 2004 supports Leno's story.

Conan isn't the poor innocent he's making himself out to be. I wonder how many of his sign-holding, anti-Leno blogging supporters have bothered reading any of the history behind all of this.
I agree that Conan isn't innocent in this. He says he won't allow The Tonight Show to be moved back a half hour because it wouldn't be The Tonight Show anymore. Regardless of if he really belives that or not, it's obvious it isn't his only motive.
But having said that, I really don't care who is right or wrong here. All I care about is who makes me laugh. Conan does, Leno doesn't.
No matter what, NBC is screwing everyone over, audience included.

If the "Tonight" Show is moved to 12:05, it becomes the "Tomorrow Morning" Show. ;-)

I don't know maybe people expected Conan to grow up a little and do a show in the Tonight show format rather than Late Nite with Conan O'brien at an earlier time. Because that is basically what it was.
Conan's ratings sucked and leno's ratings sucked at the earlier time so they figured they could kill tow birds with one stone by moving conan back a bit later.
Me i always loved the wackiness of Conan at the later timeslot but never got to see him really on the tonight show since i almost exclusively find myself wanting to watch comedy later, primetime to me is full of lame comedy.
Also Conan really does not wear his Politics on his sleeve the way Leno does, i hate that and i am not even a republican conservative.

Speaking of ratings...does anyone here with a DVR even watch shows live anymore? Are ratings able to account for DVRs?

I never even saw either of them "wearing their politics on their sleeves". I can't really pin down Leno at all, I think he is one of the smart ones and portrays a neutral stance.

Not really they have admitted that illegal torrents and Tivo might have helped certain shows get cancelled, had they been looking at the dvr ratings such shows like Star Trek enterprise or firefly would not have been cancelled.
Cannot exactly remember where i read this, so don't ask for a source, its basically speculation that the Nielsen people have looked at the dvr issue.

Interesting you guys bring up DVRs & anachronistic TV watching. In this article from my earlier post, that issue is touched upon.

"It seems obvious that what’s really at play here is a generation gap. A younger, more vocal, more online audience simply doesn’t like Mr. Leno’s show, which has gradually come to represent an entire pre-digital, Middle American culture that the Internet commentariat wishes would just get out of the way. Unfortunately for them, their parents are more likely to be watching television at 11:35 p.m. than they are."
I thought the term "internet commentariat" was interesting also. Because that seems to be exactly how it's being played out in public. The 30 - 60 generation seems to be waiting to see how it all works out. Meanwhile the 20-somethings (from the looks of the photos of supporter gatherings, the few blogs I've read, and some of my co-workers) are making it a point to go online en masse and attack the enemy. They don't seem to understand that by not watching the shows they're taking sides over, they're part of the reason there's a problem in the first place.
I work with a 24 year-old who is firmly in the Conan camp. Says it's one of his favorite shows - he makes a point of watching online segments every few days. Says also sometimes watches an entire show if he remembers to record it. He also watches Conan less now that he's on just after the news. He's not often settled in for the night that early.

Why are these 20-somethings so upset? Seems to me that they'd be happy for Conan if he will be cashing a $40 million dollar check AND most likely getting a show directly opposite from Leno on Fox. That way we'd have three to choose from Leno, Letterman, and Conan.

Also, let's not forget that in general, the 30-60 generation often tends to be too exhausted from dealing with life to deal with unimportant stuff like Conan vs. Jay. Myself included.
well, maybe I and others have demonized Leno too much. After seeing more info on the situation. I will agree that Leno isn't the bad guy. But I still don't believe Conan is the bad guy. The bad guy imho, is the Network.

yeah, Conan may be able to get another show on another network, but it won't carry with it the legacy, history and prestige the Tonight Show has.
The people I feel sorry for are those that work with Conan behind the scenes. Some of these aren't people who are making millions of $$, They relocated across the country from coast to coast. Some probably sold their houses on the east coast and bought news ones on the West coast. Some of them probably had to take their kids out of school. There lives were uprooted and and for what? Just to be fired several months later. That just doesn't seem right.
Stole this from another site but it's a good point:
NBC traded Conan O'Brien and $40 million for Jimmy Fallon. After all its transactions involving evening talk shows, the net is that Jay Leno is back at the same place (most likely with lower ratings due to all the changes and bad press), Conan is gone and Fallon is in the slot O'Brien initially vacated.

But does his core fan base really care? And just how core are they really? They're out there in the rain, somehow not at work, carrying signs that say "I'm With CoCo", checking their Facebook page, and running down the street trying to get a free pizza slice from a Conan staffer. Doesn't seem to be a lot of deep thinking going in that crowd. I would guess that the legacy & prestige of The Tonight Show is lost on them.
