Well, I read this thread through and watched the DVD. This preservation is incredible, and while it is very dark in places the colors are much better than I expected. This is a real treat, especially with the mono mix.
Interestingly, I remember it being said that the rocks when Kenobi rescues Luke looked a little white in Adywan's color correction, but they look very white here. I know that the 16mm cannot be used a reliable guide to the color of the 1977 prints, but perhaps Adywan's color correction in this scene was spot on after all. I just found this interesting - that's all. :)

I've not been following this thread, but on the back of the cover it seems to say "before the DTS" - what does DTS mean in this context?

The special edition release had a dts soundtrack, i never saw it in dts but it had a dts release according to imdb.

Before there was DTS sound, as it also says before "DVNR" and "ANH", referring to digital video noise reduction and the "A New Hope" title.
And the SE did indeed have a DTS track. I saw it presented that way, and a set of theatrical DTS CD's have popped up on Ebay more than once.

Puggo,
Finally found a copy of this. Watched a few moments here and there and wow, it really does take me back. I was 6 when Star Wars came out and even this is not a perfect print, it just makes you feel good.
Thanks for all your work. Looking forward to watching the whole film sometime this weekend.

Didn't I send you a DVD? I certainly should have, since you were mentioned during the "making of" segment. Unless you were one of the folks who said you didn't need a hardcopy?

First of all, I love this preservation. It looks great and makes me very nostalgic. That said, I have a crazy idea:
I'm wondering if there is more dynamic range in the shadows and highlights than could be captured in your telecine. In the same way that photographers expose landscapes for three different exposures (shadow, midtones, highlights) and then combine in post as an HDRI (High Dynamic Range Image), would it be possible to do that when you telecine the 16mm print? If we could see more of the highlight and shadow detail, this might be the basis for the best transfer of Star Wars yet.
Plus, it wouldn't be difficult to do a test on just a few frames from the film before committing to it!

Thank you for the great work on this, this restoration was wonderful and beatifully done! I felt very nostalgic when I saw this version, it feels more cinematic somehow in this crude form than the "GOUT" does.
Has someone managed to find out the exact Font used for Greedo's subtitles? I believe this to be the best source for it yet, Franklin Gothic Demi Cond is very close, but if you look close at the letter "g" it's not an exact match (It's at the same height as the letter "n" in the film for example). I'm starting to believe this is an old font not in use anymore.

Thanks for this, Puggo. I just watched your 8mm edition, It feels strange to have watched Star Wars in 35 minutes, but I like it! Now I'm downloading Puggo Grande, I can hardly wait :)
Since "grande" is Italian for "big", you could call your viewing cartridge transfer "Puggo Piccolo".

Thanks for the kind words. Actually, I've already decided on a name for the cartridge transfer (which will commence this summer!). I plan to call it "Puggo's Puppies".

The last thing I did before shipping the prints back was to capture the Swedish print in its entirety. So sometime over the summer I plan to release that as well. Any ideas for a name? "Puggo Svensk"? "Puggo Mops"? or simply "Puggo Swedish Edition" probably makes the most sense.

How about "Puggo Undertexter"? (Swedish word for subtitles according to google.)
Jaxxon thought they might actually be Norwegian subtitles though. It's hard not think of the fake Swedish subs on Monty Python and the Holy Grail when seeing the real thing. ;)

I'd bet the Swedish print would look pretty good with a few color filters on it, assuming there are ones strong enough to take out that pink.
