Star Wars: Combine, a MMORPG game

Author

OK, one of the forum members gave us this link once: www.swcombine.com

At that time the game was "down for mainteance", i.e. wasn't accepting new members. But I was just curious yesterday and.... voila! Welcome in SWC!

I'm a total newbie, I have barely created a new character, so don't saturate me with questions... my impression of the game:

-it's huge... 1200 members so far in one Galaxy, with dozens (hundreds?) of planets, cities, citizens, ships, vehicles, items...
-gives you that "Frontier:Elite" feel, the freedom of choosing your career and traveling through the (in)finite space
-plenty of characteristics, customizable characters
-many factions that post their job ads, recruitment ads etc.

As I'll be "immersing" myself in the game world in the following days (hey, I have to test, maybe it will turn out to be worth of my time?) I'm going to post some more thoughts and experiences.

So, if you'll ever bump into a guy named Riik Rola, don't kill him
I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

hmm... will have to check it out.

OK, being a complete yellowbelly sucks, so what did I do as a helpless soul? Joined the military!
Old sentiments die hard - I'm wearing Imperial Navy uniform again.

The factions in the game usually have their own websites, IRC channels and forums to coordinate actions between members (which is especially crucial in military factions such as the Galactic Empire). Empire appeared to be a very organized group, with the rank/award system, training facilities and comms protocol. Fail to salute some officer on IRC chat and you get demoted! This integration only helps you in immersing yourself in the game.

Right now I'm undergoing a basic training. Wish me luck - if I succeed, I may go up 2 ranks

New report coming soon...

It may have been me that posted that link, for I am:

Admiral Roy Starkiller
Leader of one of the oldest Factions in the Star Wars Combine, Renegade Inc.

I have been with the SWC for quite a long time, since July of 1999. If you look around, you should find traces of me everywhere. I've done so much work for the game over the years.

- Rules Development
- Art
- Visual Basic programming
- Web Optimization
- Contest Coordination

Nice to meet you, Admiral Starkiller! Sorry for not giving you the credit for the link, I just couldn't find the post/thread where it was buried.

If you have so much experience under your belt, would you fancy to share with us some afterthoughts about SWC? I'll bet many lurkers will read this and they are potential players.

No apology necessary.
As I said, it may have been me.

I'd like to address Motti first, then I reflect on my time in the game:
Motti_soL:
I cannot tell you what could be wrong right now. I joined a long time ago, and the signup process has changed quite a bit.
You should at least be getting an email back from the SWC saying why your request to join is being denied.
1. Are you trying to use a "free email" account (Hotmail, Yahoo, Excite, etc.) of any kind? There is a massive list of free account domains that is maintained by the SWC administration. An ISP account should let you in, and if not, you should let someone know (using the SWC Problem message board).
2. Do you have any kind of 'shared' access? If you, for example, are in a dormatory and would be signing up over the school network, the problem there is that the SWC tracks IP addresses. If someone else on campus is playing, and the IP address is close enough to your own, they may think its 1 person trying to sign up for a second account, which is against game rules.

Beyond that, I'm not sure I can help. There are other people at the SWC Problem board, though, that should be able to help you.

Now, some afterthoughts:
Actually, I'm finding it hard to put into words exactly what the Combine has done to my life. Its given me a creative outlet that I don't think I would have had otherwise. Its given me a chance to meet people from around the world. Its given me a chance to use the vast geek knowledge I've accumulated during my life of Star Wars fandom. Its given something to do with my free time (and being a geek, I have plenty of it).
I don't think I'd trade all that for anything.

I did want to give you some more stats about the game as well:
1. As RRS-1980 said, there are about 1200 members right now. We once had over 2200, but that was after some unique media coverage...we were shut down for about a week or 2 BY LUCAS.
2. RRS-1980 was actually quite far off on one thing: There are over 1000 known planets. A large number are unexplored and no one knows their location. Many have cities.
3. There are 74 races that your character can be a member of, including 5 human subgroups.
4. There are 97 different ships, from the massive and mighty SSD, to the small X-Wing. There are even a few non-canon ships.
5. 68 different groups (called Factions) to be a part of. Some are military, others provide a product or service, and 6 are considered governments.

Some see this next bit of information as a detriment. Not me. I call it opportunity.
The game isn't finished.
How is that good, an opportunity?? It means that if you can be active, you can contribute to the game, you can help to mold the way you and others, now and in the future, get to play.

Ok, let me walk my way through this:

1. Go to www.swcombine.com
2. Click Join Link.
3. Look over Terms of Usage (or not).

Under the scrolling box with the Terms of Usage, is a disclaimer about Multi-Accounts, and that they are forbidden, except under certain circumstances.
Under that disclaimer about Multis, should be another area. In it are 2 radio buttons (for agree and disagree to the terms) and a 'proceed' button.

Hitting the button will take you to a form, for signing up.

I wont join unless its RP enforced; otherwise there's just dweebs running around looking for imaginary objects.
Author
Time
i must be stupid then, coz the only thing i can see in the "scroll-box" for the TOU is the TOU themselves. i cant seem to find anywhere where there is something i can agree on.

I wonder if it could be your browser. What are you using??

I know there has been some difficulty with cross-platform compatibility, but to what extent I do not know.

But, just in case, try this. I don't know if this will work for you, but this URL is the page that immediately follows those terms. It should let you fill out the form and submit it to join.

Edit: I just tried the link and it doesn't work.
I'll post the trouble on our Bug forum, see what the deal is.

Special Edition Saboteur:
Not sure I understand what you mean by 'RP enforced'.
Author
Time
RP Enforced = Role playing enforced. Games that are RP only, require players to speak 'in character' and act like they actually were the characters they're playing.
Author
Time
In respect to the actually playing of the game, everything is IC.
Players buy/sell/trade ships.
Players fly from planet to planet.
Players join factions.

But there is still a lot of OOC discussion that goes on, for many purposes.
People with and without characters help program the game.
People with and without characters help create art for the game.
People with and without characters help keep the website up to date.
People with and without characters help by researching the potential for new ships/vehicles/weapons/etc.

This looks cool. How long does it take to get a confirmation email, cause I haven't got mine yet?
Author
Time
Again, its been a long time since I signed up, so I'm not sure exactly how the process works.

I want to say signup confirmation takes from 24-48 hours. Sometimes it can take a little longer, and that just means you caught someone at a bad time. I'm pretty sure new members applications are reviewed one-by-one, by hand...err, eye.

If it take a really long time to get anything back (4+ days) you should probably visit the SWC Problems Board, and let someone know. There may be some extenuating circumstances preventing applications from going through.

ou should get either an accepted email, or a declined email. The declined one should explain why it was declined.

Starkiller wrote that the game is open-ended: this is true, in the last week (during my short life in the game) few new features were added, like new ships, ability to transport vehicles on ships and couple more are WIP.

Just check out the new features coming soon.

Its not down for maintenance, I know that.

What I have been told, is that this happens to some people. The only recommendation I was given, at this point, is to try another browser.
Mozilla and Opera were both mentioned by name. I suppose Firefox would be another option as well.

Personally, I'm an Opera user, except for when I'm at work (like right now), and I recommend it highly.
It has a lot of nice features not found in IE (the selective popup blocker might be my favorite).
