Cartoons are awful RANT (Family Guy and South Park fans beware!)

Author

I am a big fan of cartoons, starting with Looney Tunes all the way to the early Simpsons episodes.

I watched them all.

Cartoon's have always been watchable for children and adults, but in the early 90's they started being directed at adults.

This new wave of adult cartoon's brought forth shows like the Simpsons, Duckman, and many more

Yes, children could watch these too, because the messages were only understood by adults.

Adult cartoons became a staple in average ordinary family homes across the globe.

Until the late 90's, a show by the name of South Park came along. I admit it had a good flow going, it was hilarious, but the big problem was CHILDREN!

Children usually go for animated shows. They see a cartoon and automatically think that they should watch it.

Little kids could be seen everywhere imitating Eric Cartman.

The creators took notice of this and made the show as filthy as possible.

Family Guy came along just a little after that and showed itself as a more cleaned up version of it, but it soon suffered the same fate as South Park and became one big penis joke.

South Park became very dull in the early 2000's, so they started a new formula. They did everything they could to stay on the air. No race, religion, sexual status, or physical and mental state would be left unscathed.

Children learn by example and usually imitate everything they see. Well, all across the land, children have had the most filthy language.

I have nothing against foul language, but I think children should not be saying awful things like this.

Now your part in this thread is to explain to me why these shows should be allowed on air.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I disagree with you quite a lot actually. You said the problem is the children; I think the problem is the PARENTS. South Park and Family Guy are not aimed at children any more than the Simpsons was (I also disagree with you that the Simpsons is perfectly appropriate for kids since they don't get the jokes. If I had kids, I wouldn't let them watch it).

If you don't like those shows for other reasons, that is just fine. But condemning them because they make children run around foul mouthed is a bit silly. Maybe children do learn bad habits from those shows, but really, they have no business watching them in the first place. I think it is wrong to assume Trey Park and Matt Stone made the show as filthy as possible because they realized kids were watching (as you have accused them); why assume they have some sinister ulterior motive of corrupting our children? Ever thought that maybe they really are just trying to entertain and make money from the 18 - 30 somethings that the show is suppose to be aimed at? Kind of odd you almost seem to think it is some sort of conspiracy.

I am very fond of South Park, personally, but I shudder when I hear kids younger than high school age quoting it. Just because it is a cartoon, doesn't mean it is meant for kids. Too bad many parents are too ignorant to realize this, I wish they would. Same thing goes for video games. Parents need to wise up and stop buying their kids games like Grand Theft Auto IV, Fallout 3, and Left 4 Dead. These games all carry "M" ratings with them for a reason. They are meant for adults, not children. Kids lack the maturity to digest stuff like this, and it is a parents job to protect them from it.

As for your question, EyeShotFirst, why should these shows be allowed to stay on the air? Why should any show be allowed to stay on the air? Because some people enjoy them. Because there is money to be made from them. Because we live in a free country that strongly believes in the freedom of speech. Again, it is the parents duty to protect their kids, not the government's (by banning these sorts of shows) or the entertainment industry's (by bowing the to irresponsible parent's whims and ceasing to make these kinds of shows).

 Quoted for truth!

I agree, I love South Park and believe that they never, ever intended the show to remotely be for children. Family Guy and Simpsons on the other hand did start that way. Family Guy lost me around 2004 and Simsons lost me a decade prior to that. I personally feel both of these show are due for the scrap heap as they have exhausted their material to the point that every joke or gag is a rehash from their heyday, Family Guy moreso than Simpsons. South Park, on the other hand, was alway intended to be a satire of modern events aimed at adults, and I love it. I have yet to tire of their material, mostly because they seem to always adapt to the world news at the time. I also like the fact that no group or segment of society has been left alone by Trey and Matt. I can easily watch a Christian bashing episode this week, becuase next week they'll be ripping on Atheists, Climatologists, and Scientologists. One week, they'll wear out conservative Southern rednecks and the next week, liberal big city socialites. All that said, and to further agree with C3PX, parents should keep the kids away from this show, hell even the first episode had a large satelite pop out of Cartman's ass, I think that in itself is a indicator it was never intended to be a kid show.

Who's fucking kid is watching cartoons at 11:00 pm? I'd be more worried about whatever else that kid is up to at 11:00pm than what Cartman is doing. You're so gay.

Why don't you all pay attention to the kid channels and tell me they are just fine for children.

I don't hate Family Guy or the Simpsons, but I wouldn't want children seeing them.

South Park is slowly dying. It had it's funny moments, but they have ran out of ideas lately. The last time I laughed when watching it was when they made fun of High School Musical, but who didn't?

I am not disrespecting your parenting, but don't you think their school mates who are allowed to watch these shows might just rub it off on them? I started cussing in the 3rd grade because my friends dared me to. From then until after high school "fuck" was like punctuation to me. My parents never heard me say it and still haven't, but I know how kids are.

I hate to be so anti-everything, but I really can't help it. I see the world turning into this awful hell hole. Children are going to be the next generation. Don't you think we ought to make them nicer. You don't want your world leaders to be a representation of the things they see on television.

I apologize for being offensive again, but I would like to see a better world. Character is what needs fixing more than anything.

I do think that the new cartoons suck terribly, either they are those horrible anime garbage or computer animated crap. I wish they'd have a channel devoted to the good ol' cartoons I grew up with; Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tom & Jerry, Tex Avery, Chuck Jones, Woody WoodPecker, Pink Panther, etc.

I most especially enjoy the Warner Brothers stuff and always the Chuck Jones and Tex Avery stuff.

Well there is Boomerang, but I have cable.

Does Boomerang show all that good stuff!? I haven't really checked. I have Dish Network, I think I have Boomerang. But for now the wife keeps the TV on Nick Jr. for the baby, it has much more educational stuff on there. If Boomerang is the old stuff though, as the baby girl gets bigger, I'll try to keep that channel on, plus enjoy it a little myself.

Whoa? Now we are talking about other cartoons that are on kids channels that are bad for children? I don't watch kids cartoons, so I cannot contribute to any discussion on that topic. I don't have cable or an antenna hooked up to my TV, so I have no idea about anything that comes on TV.

South Park is slowly dying. It had it's funny moments, but they have ran out of ideas lately.

Slowly dying? Ran out of ideas? The last several seasons have been absolutely brilliant! People didn't stop talking about the recent episode where Cartman get's a Glenn Beck style conservative talk show for weeks. Ever been to a bar on a Wednesday night? If there is a new episode of South Park on that night, more likely than not they'll be playing it.

It certainly isn't slowly dying, I think it actually gets better every year. Matt Stone and Trey Park do a great job of keeping each new episode relevant to current events. Every now and then there is an off episode, but just as often they hit the mark.

That said, I can't stand Family Guy, and I don't think I've really watched The Simpsons since high school.

I am not disrespecting your parenting, but don't you think their school mates who are allowed to watch these shows might just rub it off on them? I started cussing in the 3rd grade because my friends dared me to. From then until after high school "fuck" was like punctuation to me.

There you have it, even without South Park, you were swearing like a sailor in the third grade. Maybe I am way off on this, but perhaps we are dealing with a whole different issue here? Maybe shows like South Park and Family Guy are not the problems.

I don't think things are as bad as you think, but I do agree with you to some degree, we've lost a lot. Character, honor, respect, many parents do not teach these things to their kids anymore. If parents let the television be the teacher of their kids while they stand back and watch, then I think we absolutely deserve whatever "hell" our future society may become.

But then again, I watch South Park, and my outward behavior is not effected by it at all. Kids are impressionable, but they grow up. If you are afraid of future world leaders running around acting like Peter Griffin or Eric Cartman, I think you can go ahead and relax. I think there are far bigger issues out there making our children dumber and far more two dimensional than they need to be; and knocking one or two TV shows off the air isn't going to fix that. The issue is more what our children are not getting, over what they are getting.

If parents allow their kids to eat whatever they want without making them eat anything healthy, i.e "Eat your vegetables!" "I don't want to eat my vegetables, I want pie!" "Fine, here, eat your pie." And if we are regularly treating them to McDonald's or making them boxed dinners such as Macaroni & Cheese instead of cooking balanced meals for them, then we are going to have obese kids who grow into obese adults. It is the same way with what we feed our child's brain.

With information and entertainment we have reached the point where many parents are allowing their kids to eat only junk food (TV, videogames, etc.), and because of this we shouldn't be surprised when our kids grow up to have an "obese" brain. Too many parents rely on schools to give their children the balanced diet of information they need. But that is just as silly as relying solely on school lunches to give children the diet of nutrients they need. Our kids are our responsibilities. Whatever values we instill in them will ultimately trump those little bits of junk food (such as TV shows they are not suppose to watch) they consume in secrecy behind our backs. Just as sneaking in a candy bar every now and then won't hurt them, provided they are fed a regular healthy diet.

In this way, blaming the entertainment industry for shows like South Park harming our children's minds, is much like blaming the candy industry for harming our children's health.

Also South Park is hardly brainless. Yes, it's crude and offensive, but they've got some of the best social satire on television.

Video game console as a nanny would more diserve a topic.

What about children reading books instead, so you'll have them clever and awaken enough later to decode the world through what is written here and there.

The Internet is quite interesting nowadays as you can still find precise clues to catch what's more or less going on even through videos, but it may be not true in the future (Internet as a controlled media would be the end of it, and it has already begun). Books are still the best alternative. But I'm not speaking about making children little adults right now of course. Each thing in its time.

It's interesting. I got more sex and violence from the books I read as a kid than I got from videogames or TV combined. And no one cared.

I had an 'Aliens' novel that had the most explicit sex scenes, and I used to sit in class reading that. I read James Bond and Remo Williams books with sex, and heads exploding, and torture, while I was in the 6th grade. Piers Anthony's books are borderline rape-fetish and underage girl-fetishist, but my grandma used to take me to the library to get them.

Yet in my entire life it's never been suggested to me that kids shouldn't read. My folks used 'books as a nanny' all the time, and people praised them about how literate I was.

Don't get me wrong, I'm pro-book. But it's an interesting dichotomy.

Boost - I think the double standard comes from the level of involvement in getting the child to participate.  Children have to learn how to read, they don't have to learn how to sit and stare at a TV screen.

I understand and agree, but the objection to violent/offensive videogames and TV tends not to be 'these passive skills are ultimately detracting to a child's productivity' but more often 'how can we expose our children to such filth?!" The objection is to the content, not the medium.

I understand that books get questioned and banned frequently in the US, usually school libraries, but you rarely see the lead on the 10 oclock news "Is your son reading Lolita? Find out how that will warp him for life" whereas the "Hot Coffee" mod in GTA3, a game no kid should play in the first place, was major news.

Kids watched Duckman??? Why? I'm not even sure it had anything to offer adults.

And didn't the Simpsons start off a lot more kid-level, and slowly evolve into the considerably more sophisitcated show it is now?

Whenever I hear one of these discussions, I wonder when exactly the job of a parent became defined as shielding a child from the toxic culture at large?

Sounds good to me, and very interesting. I don't have problems with children reading aldut books :) But you 'll recognize you cultivate yourself creating those images in your mind from reading much more than when you sustain them from a movie or so. And what's as interesting is that it is your sensitivity that works then.

Images imposed by TV or VG have a big potential on the subconscient, why they have all interest in being the vehicule of something more noble than free violence and stupidity, mostly for children that are not able to choose or make a difference because of the huge standardization of stupidity we currently witness.

When you were reading your "adult" books, I'm sure you made the difference. Simply because it didn't looked like the Mickey Mouse magazines your friends used to read. ;)

Most children are to go so stupid in the future that they are yet a perfect target for a new world (dis)order.
