This new wave of adult cartoon's brought forth shows like the Simpsons, Duckman, and many more
Yes, children could watch these too, because the messages were only understood by adults.

Little kids could be seen everywhere imitating Eric Cartman.
The creators took notice of this and made the show as filthy as possible.
I disagree with you quite a lot actually. You said the problem is the children; I think the problem is the PARENTS. South Park and Family Guy are not aimed at children any more than the Simpsons was (I also disagree with you that the Simpsons is perfectly appropriate for kids since they don't get the jokes. If I had kids, I wouldn't let them watch it).
If you don't like those shows for other reasons, that is just fine. But condemning them because they make children run around foul mouthed is a bit silly. Maybe children do learn bad habits from those shows, but really, they have no business watching them in the first place. I think it is wrong to assume Trey Park and Matt Stone made the show as filthy as possible because they realized kids were watching (as you have accused them); why assume they have some sinister ulterior motive of corrupting our children? Ever thought that maybe they really are just trying to entertain and make money from the 18 - 30 somethings that the show is suppose to be aimed at? Kind of odd you almost seem to think it is some sort of conspiracy.
I am very fond of South Park, personally, but I shudder when I hear kids younger than high school age quoting it. Just because it is a cartoon, doesn't mean it is meant for kids. Too bad many parents are too ignorant to realize this, I wish they would. Same thing goes for video games. Parents need to wise up and stop buying their kids games like Grand Theft Auto IV, Fallout 3, and Left 4 Dead. These games all carry "M" ratings with them for a reason. They are meant for adults, not children. Kids lack the maturity to digest stuff like this, and it is a parents job to protect them from it.
As for your question, EyeShotFirst, why should these shows be allowed to stay on the air? Why should any show be allowed to stay on the air? Because some people enjoy them. Because there is money to be made from them. Because we live in a free country that strongly believes in the freedom of speech. Again, it is the parents duty to protect their kids, not the government's (by banning these sorts of shows) or the entertainment industry's (by bowing the to irresponsible parent's whims and ceasing to make these kinds of shows).
