I don't what to say.   To me,  watching sports is fun.  When you are talking about a team sport, the team represents some entity,  be it a city, a highschool, a college, or even a nation(the Olympics).  Its really not about pride in the 18-22 year olds, its about pride in what they represent.   When they win,  your city/school/country wins, you win.  When they lose, you lose.  When you cheer on a team for your whole life, after your father and grandfather did as well, you tend to get attached to the team.  You tend to live and die by them(not literally, but figuratively).

I agree with Warbler.  Sports are fun.  They aren't for everybody and people can be WAY too into it.  But if your idea of fun is rooting for your team and showing an insane amount of school pride, I'm not going to look down on what you enjoy.  Unless your idea of being a fan gets you in fist-fights, I'm cool with it.

I lived in Knoxville for a number of years.  The people in the house next door to me had a hearse that they painted orange and white with the schools logo on the side.  Every weekend in fall, they'd load up a cooler and barbeque in the back and headed out to the game.

But think about it this way.  Sports is absolutely no different from being a fan of anything else, be it video games, anime, or Star Wars (but I'm sure lots of sports fans would take offense at being lumped in with such "nerds" but it's true).  Yet, for some reason, it's much more culturally acceptable to be an obsessive fan of sports than any of those other things.

Fixed!

I think that is that part that annoys me. Honestly, If I had people constantly telling me how awesome the new dragon boxes are, and making predictions about the next dragon box (or Star Wars, or anything for that matter), and just generally going on about the thing as if it was quite literally the most important thing in the world, and act baffled when I fail to reciprocate their enthusiasm, then you can bet I'd feel the same level of annoyance for those things as I do sports.

I guess it is the magnitude of the obsession, added with the social disapproval I am met with for not sharing that obsession, that makes me dislike it so much.

So, getting back to the playoff system...

What about the argument that it would interfere with the player's end of semester final exams?

If I'm not mistaken, the basketball tournament often interferes with spring exams, and they seem to do fine.  And let's be honest here, most of the players aren't exactly taking Rocket Science 101.

yeah, and to be honest I'm not too worried about the players education.   I would be worried about the education of players in the lower divisions of college football, but not Division 1A players.  Most aren't there to get an education, they're there to play football and to try to make the NFL.

Major developments in conference realignment that could radically affect the (non) playoff system...

The Pac-10 is set to invite up to six (six!) teams from the Big 12.  The Big 10 (eleven) has its eyes on two more teams, which would leave the last four out in the cold (at least for the moment) and the Big 12 no more.  We'd be down to five major conferences.

One (admittedly far fetched) possibility is that we end up with just four major conferences: Pac-10/Big 12, SEC, Big 10, and some kind of ACC/Big East merger.  This could create four conference championship games that could be the quarterfinals of a playoff system.

Of course, that still leaves out a lot of schools.  I live in Mountain West territory, and I can tell you BYU and TCU would be none too happy about this.

yeah that's not going to work.  What about Notra Dame?  We need a playoff system that includes and is fair to all Division 1A schools (I refuse to use the new name for Division 1A).

I hope all these mergers don't end up doing away with some old time rivalries.

I agree.  What the hell is it?  Football Bowl Subdivision???  Lame.

I agree.  I grew up rooting for Colorado (CU for those who follow the team) and Nebraska was the biggest game each year (not so much for Nebraska maybe, but for CU it was huge).  Reportedly Nebraska is one team that might go to the Big 10, while CU might go to the Pac 10 or might be one of the teams left out if Baylor gets invited.

Either way, not good :-(

yeah, I mean why name it after something that everyone wants to do away with?

I'd like to know what the hell they're going to call the Big 10 if they add two more teams.  Big 13 just doesn't have the same ring.

btw, I always thought the new Big 10 logo after they added team 11 (Penn State) was rather clever...

yeah, whomever came up with that one was very smart.

Wait a minute.  Do we have the right thread title for this one?  Should it be American College Football?  Or College American Football?  Or College Soccer?  Or...

;-)

I read some of the articles that the author has written.  I guarantee you that he tares the BCS to shreds in the book.

I don't care what the rest of the world thinks.   I know what football is and I know what soccer is.

I used to know an old Scottish gent here in the states. He referred to American Football as "Grid-Iron." That's a name that should catch on.

Author

nope.   Its football and that's that end of that.

Author

I hear the term gridiron used occasionally, but usually refer to the playing surface rather than the actual sport.

Author

yes, very true.   Its because originally football fields had lines going both horizontally and vertically, resembling a grid.

But dont you think it deserves to be the only sport with the name of a METAL in the name?

GRIDIRON!!

Let the Europeans enjoy a sport named after the least sexy body part. I want to watch 300 lb freaks in armor kill eachother in a sport named after the same stuff swords are made of! Let a bunch of skinny South Americans in shorts play a sport named after stinky feet!
