I've never lived on a College Campus,  what is the big problem with the football culture?

Example (and I didn't even go there myself):

University of Tennessee, Knoxville.  Everything is that disgusting color of orange, including the McDonalds on campus.  The best time to go shopping?  Saturday, as everyone will either be in the stadium or at home watching/listening to the game.  I mentioned that talk radio station?  "SportsTalk" was on for four hours every day, near constant talk of college football.  You used to FEEL it in the air when the team lost, as the entire city got depressed.  When they won the National Championship, it seemed like everyone was nicer and friendlier for several months.  I used to make fun of Peyton Manning back then (until he got drafted by the Colts, my hometown NFL team) as being like their Jesus and football their religion.  They take football and their college pride way too seriously for my tastes.  The entire county put their pride in a bunch of 18-22 year olds who could do no wrong.
