I agree with this idea. However, not too much. In the shot above for instance, you could leave the ones at the top the same, but maybe add dueling ships in the distance with small laser blasts in between the foreground ships.

Would it also be conceivable to show ships going in various different directions (like a SD going vertical in the background, one at an upwards 45%, but upside-down, etc) and make it less "2-dimensional"?

Again, SERENITY minus the camera zooming would be a good example...
