Been watching this thread progress over the months and wow, there are alot of really cool suggestions; however, as cool as they look, they seem to take away from the "How I use to rememeber Empire". Is it really that important to change an angle that still works, or to study a split second shot so closely for a costume defect, or for in-camera extra that may or may not be moving that way you want them to?
Anyway, the ideas are really cool, but they seem to eco what George Lucas does; changing, just because he can. I was at one point doing a shot for Ady ( Lukes X-Wing approach to bespin ), but I couldn't get/find a CG X-wing that was detailed or textured well enough that matched the studio model. I did a test render/ composite with a X-wing I found for free on the net. Be glad to post the test render if anybody is curious.
If what Ady was doing was trying to replace the OUT I'd agree with you (this is what Lucas has tried to do with his own re-workings over the years).
Seeing as Ady is effectively giving us a SE that makes more sense I don't.
The SE's were a half arsed affair, some of the changes made perfect sense others didn't, some of them were incomplete (applied to one part of the films but not to others, like the added lift outside the Cloud City window in ESB:SE, one minute it's there next minute it's not). This was made worse by the DVD versions and their bizarre colour and sound choices.
I'm sure if Ady could track down the elements to give us a HD version of the OUT he would (he has given us versions of almost everything else).
The changes that do get made go through quite a bit of peer review and debate on the "Does it make sense to do that" side of things so I wouldn't say that it's change for change sake.
It would be great to see whatever you have in terms of rendering and model work, especially if it illustrates a potentially useful edition, enhancement or implementation of any of the ideas on this or any other thread.
