I hate November the 14th and I always will.   I got fired on this day last year.

I hate that I spent over an hour filling out an online job application only to be told at the end of it that  "Your responses to our initial questions for this position indicate that your background and/or your experience do not meet the minimum requirements for this role".   It didn't specify what requirement(s)  were not meant, and not single human being looked at my application before it was turned down.    The description of the job itself did not mention any requirement(s) that I do not meet or exceed.

Nice.  That sucks.  Maybe you should burn a Catholic.  It always makes me feel better if only for a few minutes.

I am happily employed at the moment, but during my short two month or so long stint of unemployment earlier this year, where I found myself desperate for any job whatsoever, I discovered being over qualified seems to be just as bad, if not worse, than being under qualified. I made it into an interview for a low level job I was hoping would tide me over until something real came along, only to be told flat out that they wont hire me because they had no assurance they wouldn't go through the trouble of training me only to have me find a better job and quit shortly after.

One of my buddies is currently having that same problem. Even Burger King, at which he had previous manager experience, wouldn't hire him despite the "help wanted" sign still being on their door a month and a half after they turned him down.

Fun job climate we are currently experiencing, eh?

maybe being overqualified was the problem.   They listed it as an entry level position, and I have 1 year experience.

I am not talking about one year experience kind of overqualified, I don't think that would do it, seems like they would appreciate that. But it seems a lot of employeers looking to hire employees with a high school diploma seem to shy away from applicants who have their Bachelors or Masters degrees; even though there are plenty of guys out there that do have their degrees who are desperate for work and more than willing to work at those kind of low level jobs.

Hopefully it's taken within the context of Warbler's and my discussion in the Guy Fawkes Thread, or else it's totally out of left field.

hmm, perhaps it was the fact that they were looking for people with a high school diploma and I have an associates degree?

ah, of course the democrats are to blame, and here I thought it was a society too dependent on computers that was to blame.

That's funny, I would have said that sharp political divides and partisanship were ruining our society.

Sure.  We blame the liberals for the partisanship and sharp political divides... so original statement still stands!  :)

Yeah, if you are applying for a job that only requires a high school diploma, try not mentioning your associates and see what happens. I bet you'll get more call backs.

At some point aren't they going to find out about the Associates degree?  I can't lie about on a job application.  If I get caught in a lie, they'll throw my application in the trash can. or if they find I lied after they hire me, they'll fire me.   Won't they?

Depends on the job. I'd have no problem leaving out the fact that I have an Associates degree if I were applying at a place like Wal-Mart or some other store clerk or lower level type job. They probably never would find out, they process so much paper work I can't imagine they'd bother to check. If they do find out and ask about it, playing dumb goes a long ways in this world. A simple, "Oh, did I not fill that information in? I'm sorry, yeah I have an Associates in..." should be more than enough to save face. If they somehow find out after they hire you, I highly doubt they'd see it as a reason to fire you. It really isn't at all fair to turn someone down for a job simply because they have a degree. If they are willing to work below their abilities for less money then they ought to have just as much chances of scoring that job as anyone else.
