Quick question, and I almost feel stupid for asking since it's probably so simple, but how does one go about converting word processing documents to a .pdf file? And preferably for free?

CutiePDF writer. It actually installs as a virtual printer, so watch for that twist. I've used it before (awesome with MS Publisher) and it seems to work pretty well.

I concur with xhonzi. CutePDF writer is free and easy. And i like the fact that installs as a virtual printer. So if you have a web confirmation you want to save but not print out on paper, just "Print" it and choose CutePDF from your available printers.
BTW, Word 2007 has a built-in option to "publish" to PDF.
