Your welcome...anytime

Here is an article about the 64 bit versionyou should check out.

http://gizmodo.com/5133771/why-you-should-go-64+bit-with-windows-7

Obviously the biggest hurdle is the drivers. I would make a list of the programs you use and your hardware you currently have connected to your computer and check to see if they would work on a 64 bit version. That may give you an idea how difficult it would be to upgrade to the 64 bit version. Below is a a list of items Microsoft says to consider when going with a 64 bit version (assuming Vista's 64 bit is similar to 7's 64 bit.)

What to consider when you install a 64-bit version of Windows Vista

  • 64-bit device drivers may not be available for one or more devices in the computer.
  • Device drivers must be digitally signed.
  • 32-bit device drivers are not supported.
  • 32-bit programs may not be fully compatible with a 64-bit operating system.
  • It may be difficult to locate programs that are written specifically for a 64-bit operating system.
  • Not all hardware devices may be compatible with a 64-bit version of Windows Vista.

So far, running Win 7 Pro 64 here, I've had only one minor problem. Very miniscule, but a favorite free drive partition manager of mine is Easeus Partition Master, however their free version does not work on 64 bit systems. So, I found Partition Wizard, which is oddly WAY too much like Partition Master that it isn't even funny, so it's like I never changed. Other than that everything has been a dream, but, it did make it easier for me that I installed Win 7 64 on my Dell Laptop, Dell had already developed, or had the respective company develop, the necessary drivers and had them posted a full two weeks prior to the street launch of Win 7.

So is the College Student discount only for "full time" students or "part time" as well?because I have friends that go to College but still work.

1 more thing,if I were to buy a full version of Win7 Pro,could I put it on my little boys PC and be legit? or do I have to buy 2 full versions?seems kind of dumb to have to buy 2 when both PC's are in the same house using the same Internet and such.

Here's what Microsoft Says

Who qualifies for the program?
       1. You must have a valid e-mail address at an educational institution ending with the domain suffix .EDU (ie, leina@contoso.edu) OR have a valid email address at one of the educational institutions listed here. AND
       2. You must be a student at a U.S. educational institution and must be actively enrolled in at least 0.5 course credit and be able to provide proof of enrollment upon request.

Regarding your second question, in theory you could install the Full version of Win7 on multiple computers however if you wanted to receive updates and whatnot you would need to activate the license/copy and that would most likely mean Microsoft would notice that one key is being used on two computers and that would create an issue...not exactly sure what happens. I know that with XP if you try to update and they find your key is already in use (or not genuine) they constantly nag you with pop up notifications that your license is not genuine. I may be wrong but I think after a certain time frame if you choose not to activate your copy of Win7 the same thing will happen, so even if you could live without updates you would potentially have issues.  I know you want Win7 Pro, but this is an option

I know the copy of Microsoft Office 2007 had it where you could install it on up to four computers. Maybe Windows 7 has something similar?

Microsoft's stance (legally) for Windows 7 is one license one computer

I recently installed the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Professional on my MacBook Pro via Boot Camp, and can connect to the wireless network in my dorm, but not to my AirPort Express here at home.  I've Googled all I can Google, and the only thing I can come up with is that the 64-bit version of Windows 7 isn't compatible with the AirPort Express right now - but that's not a "for-sure" thing, just an educated guess.

So has anyone gotten a 64-bit copy of Windows 7 to work with an AirPort Express wireless router?  If so, how?

Still a little confused, can this student discount be used to purchase at the school,or is it online only? I see that our school is listed and I know a few people that go and are not interested in Win7 Pro,so I might have a shot at this.

Online only..the way it works is that you have to have a working e-mail address (a working University address) and that is how Microsoft determines if you are eligible or not. Here's how it goes

1. Enter your e-mail address into Microsoft's site ( http://windows7.digitalriver.com/store/mswpus/en_US/DisplayHomePage?resid=nEUjbgoBAkgAABzVhVYAAAA7&rests=1257209279718 )

2. Check the e-mail address you entered and if you are eligible you will receive the following information from Microsoft

Congratulations! You are eligible to purchase from the Windows 7 Offer Store

Click on the following link to get started:

When looking-up your order in the future, please use the following password: XXXXXX

PLEASE NOTE: Forwarding this email to others will make you ineligible for the program.

3. In the e-mail you will receive a link that will take you to the Purchase site to get Windows 7 for the discounted price.

4. If you want Windows 7 Professional make sure you click on "Need to join your Schools Network Domain?" at the purchase site. Looks like this....

Disclaimer: The file you download is an executable file and it has been reported that people had issues installing Windows 7 using the file. There is a workaround, you have to create an ISO file from the .exe file then you can burn as a bootable disk.

Another option when you are at the purchase site is to get a physical disk which adds about $15 onto the $30.

Not really sure I understand the disclaimer, are you ordering a download or the actual package? also I thought both 32 & 64 bit were together,if not now I have to decide which I want, shoot I wanted to try 64 but if had problems switch to 32.

wish you had a screenshot for the next screen after clicking "Need to join your Schools network domain" so I can give these instructions to the lady that will be getting this for me,so there won't be no chance of a screw up LOL.

I really appreciate all the help you are giving me to Ghost,Thanks a lot.

Also was wondering,if she did not actually want to order it could she give me here email and I go through the process and order it for her for me.

OK after doing more reading it is a download and make your own iso,but would it be in her name?

What you get when you order the $29.99 Student discount is a downloadable file to Install Windows 7 (.exe file). YOU DO NOT GET A DISK, however last I knew you can order a physical disk for an additional $15 on top of the  $30.  I do not believe that the download is in anyone's name.

You have to select either 32 bit or 64 bit, unfortunately you do not get both.  If you see in my above post the e-mail from Microsoft states that if you forward the e-mail the link to the purchase site will not work.

Here are updated screen shots of the purchase site.

Thank you very very much again, but it looks like I will just have to buy it for the $289 from Amazon you posted a few posts back,I really want to be able to switch back and forth, and the Pro version is an upgrade,I want the full.

again Thanks for helping me clear this all up.

I also just found out earlier my oldest boy is running Win7 Pro 64bit and he has the same powerhouse PC I do and he already has all the 64bit drivers I will need, now I just hope ALL my programs I use will run OK.

He also has 8 gigs RAM and he said his programs fly,so I can't wait to give it a whirl.

Well, I really don't regret my purchase of the Windows 7 Pro full edition, yeah some folks got it cheaper, but I just can't help but feel I'll get my use out of it. Windows 7 will most likely be the standard for a minimal of three years, if not longer. I can use the license I purchased for that whole time and behind. Plus, as service packs come out, I can slipstream the service packs into my copy and continue to re-use my license, far beyond when my current Dell E6400 has been replaced. Just my two cents.

Does anyone know if Avisynth is compatible with win 7? in 32 and 64 bit versions.

also curious if CineVision and CCE SP are to for that matter.

Thanks

So... we get this awesome drum beat any time we click on anything in IE in Windows 7.  What's up with that?

Just click:

1. Control Panel

2. Windows Firewall

3. Allow a program or feature in Windows Firewall (it's on the top-left)

Then just check/uncheck your way to happiness!

Yeah, Microsoft has really turned a corner with Windows 7 and all it's features. I even use Microsoft Security Essentials for antivirus and the Windows Firewall as well. No third party stuff for security purposes anymore. Now if they perfect a decent anti-malware-adware-spyware-suite, I'd be delighted.

What is Microsoft Security Essentials? and I am using the Windows Firewall, and doing a trial of ESET NOD32,so far so good.

I did have 1 annoying problem though,I was getting a dual boot screen at start up and my choices were previous windows or windows 7 boot, well I deleted ALL win xp stuff but could not get rid of the choice selection screen,so I got easyBCD and removed it,so far I am really liking Windows 7 Pro.
