Re-Cast Star Wars

Author

Who would play who is Star Wars was remade today?

What if it was made in the 70s, but as a blacksploitation film?

What if the OT had been produced in the early 90s? The 1950s? The 1930s?

What if the PT had been made immediately following the OT? Who would play who?

What if the PT had been made first, in 1977?

Lets get some fun fantasy cast lists.

Well if Lucas did not stop making them in 83, and pre production had commenced in late 83 on the sequel trilogy we could have had episode 7 as early as 1986, then episode 8 in 1989, and Episode 9 in 1992.  Then the first prequel in 1995, the second in 1998, and the third in 2001 as he had originally planned i believe.

Plus we would not have needed as much over use of cgi, at least in the sequels though the prequels should have also been minimal cgi or cgi free.  Then make sure you don't create non existent characters from the original backstory like qui gon and jar jar binks, dooku or darth maul, have yoda as kenobis master, have anakin older in episode 1.  Have Anakin and Obi as good friends, actually make anakins turn make sense and start out with him being a good guy and likeable like luke from the oot.

Make sure not to cast Natalie Portman as Luke and Leia's mother, or Hayden as Anakin.

No padawans, i prefer the term apprentice and no god awful midi-chlorians.

No coruscant an EU creation, name the planet something else, Had Abbadon was not any better.

There was no jedi temple in existence in the oot, and if there has to be a jedi temple why on the stomping grounds of palpatine seems a bit too convenient.

Assuming they would have been quality somehow... I would have liked to have seen the Prequels come between the OT and the Sequel Trilogy.  That would have given a few years for the OT cast to age.  At least, it was always my thought that the sequels would be about a generation or so later that the OT.

But then the sequels would have been full of the same godawful writing and cgi that was in evidence in Crystal skull, the phantom menace. attack of the clones and revenge of the sith.

What if Episode seven came out ten years after return of the jedi in 1993?

Following on the heels of the 3rd indiana jones film The Last Crusade and the second best in the trilogy imho.

They could have been good providing Lucas come up with the general ideas and outline, have it fleshed out by a good screenwriter like Lawrence Kasden was able to do on the empire strikes back.  And bring in Directors other than himself to make them.   Bringing in new blood was not the problem with the prequels, the problem was in not getting the right people, less collaboration and an unwillingness to delegate anything and direct every stage of production himself, was lucas chief failing as far as I'm concerned.  And he is a terrible writer but has a great visual sense, not so good when it comes to actors or character acting.

For instance they tried unsucessfully for a long time in finding the person to write the fourth indiana jones or a director.  Finally Lucas had to sit down and write the blasted thing himself and have Koepp polish it, and Speilberg directed it.  Would the film have been better had a different writer and story and director been chosen, hard to say could have been worse than the mediocre stuff we got we could have gotten something like the mummy 3.

I mean i would rather have Crystal Skull as it is then a fourth one written and directed by M. Knight, man the very idea of such crappyness would bring horrors unfathomable upon the masses, lol.

That's what I meant.  As long as we're suggesting the movies be made right after RotJ, then release the prequels in 86, 89, and 92 and release the sequels in 95, 98 and 2001.  Then it's 12 years later for Mark Hamill and co and they can come back to play slightly different roles in the sequel trilogy.

How about if the PT was made in 1985?

QUEEN AMIDALA: Jennifer Connely. (regality and can play young or old at that age)

ANAKIN: (grown up) Robert Downey Jr. (charming, but skilled at dark characters)

ANAKIN: (lil Kid) who knows.

QUI GON: Frank Langella

OBI-WAN: Kenneth Branaugh (was born to do it)

MACE WINDU: Rutger Hauer (a bad MFer if there ever was one)

COUNT DOOKU: Louis Jordan (aristocratic with a real good twisted side)

DARTH MAUL: Young Jackie Chan (would blow the audiences away in 1985)

thoughts?

I really like this list, and it makes a lot of sense for that time period.  could be cool (watching it in my head now) :)

Yeah, that's nice.  I'm trying to come up with a young Anakin for 1985, but I think I can't because I subconsiously don't want a young Anakin in the movies.

That being said, how would an '85 Elijah Wood look for a young RDjr?

Wouldn't Wood be a bit young in '85 even to play young Anakin?

They made a ripoff of star wars in the eighties after return of the jedi it was called masters of the universe, and had frank langella as skeletor. They called it star wats for the eighties.

The ripoffs are always crap though just like flash gordon 1980 was a poor substitute for 1977's star wars.

They called starship troopers star wars for the 90's and it was crap.

And Star Trek 2009 was a bad remake of scenes from the original star wars trilogy transported into the trek world and its characters, lame.

Pine Kirk is as horrible as Hayden Skywalker, a joke to both franchises and an insult to the fanbase.

Well, I would call Masters of the Universe more of a lame attempt at a He-Man movie than a ripoff of Star Wars, per se.

Or of the New Gods...  have you heard that the director wanted to make a Jack Kirby 4th World movie starring Darkseid, but he couldn't so he changed the names in his script to those of He-Man and crew and thus was born Masters of the Universe the Movie...?

I heard a few years ago of a new gods movie and there was even a script floating around, i could not find it online though recently.  The project was nixed because it was deemed too expensive.  But i always thought it was because there would be comparisons to star wars and possibly a lawsuit from lucasfilm despite the fact Lucas borrowed liberally from Kirbys New Gods and Fantastic Four at least according to the woman who wrote the book star wars the magic of myth.

I find this slightly hilarious as Lucas has been called the biggest plagiarist of all time and has been rewarded with billions for  it.

I have always wondered if Alex Raymond and Edgar Rice Burroughs were alive would they sue Lucas?

I know both Kurosawa, Joseph campbell, and Asimov were delighted by Lucas borrowing from them.

I remember reading somewhere that Roddenberry was embittered by lucas alleged stealing of ideas from star trek, and also that Frank Herbert considered a lawsuit against Lucas before his death.
