***The "Darth Editous" Episode IV DVD Info and Feedback Thread*** - a partially "de-specialed" DVD — Page 38

Angel, that outside shot does look very cool - the only trouble is, if I did it for that shot I'd have to do it for every other damn Death Star exterior shot in the whole movie - and there are a lot of fast moving ones at the end. But I am keeping an eye on the other threads ;)

I think that color correction is absolutely necesarry from the 2004 DVD edition, especially... (blue Yoda does not work. lol) But at the same time, just make sure you don't take out TOO much color. There should be a slight natural tint there, very slight. You know what I mean?

In no case would I ever remove 100% of the saturation - probably never more than 75%, and then only in special circumstances (such as the horribly blue walls when the Stormtroopers break into the hanging bay control room). I find the Pleasantville effect in ANH:R very distracting - somehow there is something very UN-neutral about perfectly neutral grey.

When it comes to ESB and Hoth, I'll probably go for a halfway position between the deep blue DVD and the slightly stark and lifeless GOUT.

I agree with DE that de-saturation should not be taken to extremes.  Looking at 70mm film scans you can see that there was a lot of natural colour and life in the film originally, and making it look too black and white in an effort to get rid of the artificial photoshopped look isn't really much of an improvement.  Dialing down extremes of blue casting is definitely important, but certain things like the Death Star already did have a bit of a light blueness to them originally, and that shouldn't be completely removed.  Oversaturated reds are often seen throughout the '04 version as well, and are in some need of adjustment, but again extreme measures need not be taken.

Most of the other exterior shots are fine IMO. They are blocky and more tech like.

Do you consider in the death star trench run to make the guns actually be static rather turning around? Logicaly if the guns can turn the lasers will hit the trench's walls ;)

Well, by the same logic, WWI gunplanes would have shot their props off, but the boffins thought of that, too...

Anyone know exactly how Selective Color in Photoshop works? As in, the mathematics behind it?

Edit: Never mind, I think I figured it out - new and improved colour correction filter coming tomorrow.

And to keep you amused in the meantime: http://xkcd.com/469/

New colour correction filter:

Again, it doesn't always produce the nicest result, but it's a lot quicker than my last filter and it turns the Death Star walls to a more realistic blue-grey.

Looks great. However you need to watch out for blues turning into purples. The sky in several shots and Obi's lightsaber looks purple to me.

Very nice results indeed! Now it looks like the interior of executor :)

The death star exterior and SDs shouldnt be dead gray?

I see some Ben's saber color bug ;)

What will be radical changes in this edit DE? Enhanced mattes only?

Yes, even the hologram looks purple.  Overall, those are very well done.

Technically, the filter is incapable of turning blues into purples. In can turn cyans into blues, though.

The death star exterior and SDs shouldnt be dead gray?

They're not :) The filter is only capable of turning the purest cyan (equal blue and green) into grey, and even then it's only at 75% in those shots.

I see some Ben's saber color bug ;)

You say bug - and I did put that shot in there as an example of it getting it wrong - but I'm not sure I don't prefer the new colour anyway (maybe at a slightly lower power though).

Just the one enhanced matte is planned so far (other than the ones that were already fixed in previous versions). Other changes will include more SE removal/GOUT restoration, and some more subtle FX fixes.

With Adywan currently looking for people with Rebel Pilot outfits could you pool your resources and try to get some replacements for the helmets of 'Blue Squadron'?

Ady coloured the insignia red but that doesn't change the obvious fact that none of those helmets appear in a battle were all the pilots are pretty much accounted for.

It would be much easier to replace whole pilots in those shots than to just replace the helmets as in these rough mock-ups :

Helmet 1

Helmet 2

Thank you.  I have all the respect in the world for Ady's work, and I admire his dedication greatly, but this killed ANH:R for me.

Avoid infestation. Rotate.

Just finished a new AviSynth filter (ignore the horizontal stripes):

1. Original

2. Brightened (final)

3. Recoloured (rough demo)

Heh, what resources?

I'd rather adjust the existing shot - I may be able to do something, if only to make the helmets not look quite so spiffy.

DE you gonna share this filter?

Maybe, but it's not doing anything that AviSynth's coloryuv doesn't do. I just like to work in RGB32, so I wrote a filter that takes 32-bit RGBA and turns it into 12-bit Y+10 bit U+10 bit V, then another that can do the coloryuv stuff on that, then another that transforms it back to RGB32 (sounds horrendous but it's lossless if you do no operations, so I think I'm okay). In theory this gives 16x the luma resolution than converting to YUV and operating on that.

The previous filter, cyanide, which I'm still going to use as well, is pretty much just a subset of what my experimental selectivecolour filter can do.

Thanks for the info DE,but I know I would like to try them out if I can,I am not very good at color correcting so any help at all would be great.

I'm sorry but I thought it was obvious what I was suggesting.

Ady is looking for people with pilot outfits and you are returning to ANH:SE with a view to making it actually special (to your own specifications naturally).

The pilot helmets in those shots are a problem so if he gets hold of pilot outfits to film you (or he for you) could (in theory) shoot some elements which could replace some of the elements in those shots.

It might be easier than adjusting the existing shots from scratch because matching new details on existing material (so I'm told) is very tricky (basically it's rotoscoped animation which is relatively easy for lightsaber blades but helmet decals beyond just a colour change would be trickier).

Oh, gotcha - yeah, I guess I might be able to do something utilising physical props, though that does seem like it might lead down a "spending money" route ;)

Hey, DE.  Nice to see that you are up to something yet again.  Or maybe you never stopped and i haven't been paying attention!

Any chance you might update the 1st post with the current state of the project?  Of course, by updating i mean just shoving down the original info there and retaining it, but putting a little blurb regarding your current goals for the project.  I imagine this will help the stragglers like me get up to speed.

Thanks!  Looking forward to what comes next!
