They didn't try - they just did it.

they didn't hold the girl at gun point.

That was after they lied to her, by the way. They told her if she left the ball in the clubhouse and came back after the game, she could meet Ryan Howard and he would sign it for her.  When she came back, she didn't get to meet anyone - a security guard handed her a different ball. She had no say in the matter, she was never given a choice. Her mother wasn't at the game, only the two kids were escorted to the clubhouse.

Again I don't think we know the full story yet.   I wonder if it was just a miscommunication.  I doubt very much that the Phillies would actually try to deliberately deceive the girl.    The Phillies management isn't stupid. They don't want nor need bad PR.   I find it hard to believe that they would purposefully lying the girl just to get the ball.   Might they offer her a signed ball for the home run ball? yes.  Would they lie to here and say "give us the ball and will have Howard sign it give it back to you" as a way to con the ball away from the girl?  I doubt it.  Doing so would be asking for trouble.   Doing something like that would be a dumb thing to do.  The Phillies organization isn't that dumb.   Like I said, maybe it was a miscommunication.   Maybe this girl only thought they said they were going to sign the Home run ball give it back to her.   Maybe it was a miscommunication between the Phillies Employee that talked to the girl and the rest of the Phillies organization.   I still want to hear their side of things.

I didn't intimate anything.  I said I didn't like the way the Phillies handled this situation and then I posted a link to the story.

it sounded as though you were trying paint the Phillies as the bad guys in the World Series.

All that said, even if I weren't a Yankees fan, I'd pull for whichever team was against them - based solely on how poorly Ryan Howard & Co handled this event;

It seems like you were trying show reason to not root for them, so,  I decided to show reasons why the Yankees might be the bad guys and reasons not to root for them.
