1) Disregard previous post by Mr. Nanner Split

2) Buy Nintendo DS

3) R4DS and mircoSD card

4) Buy Metroid Fusion

5) Buy Metroid Zero Mission

6) Buy WarioWare Inc. if you want

7) Obtain SNES emulator for DS

8) Obtain Nintendo emulator for DS as well as emulators for whatever other system you are nostalgic for

9) Obtain SCUMMVM for DS

10) Get ROMS for all those unfortunate cartriges of systems past rotting away in your attic

11) Dig out your CD backups of all those old LucasArts adventures games that came on floppys

12) Be occupied for THE REST OF YOUR NATURAL LIFE

Sure, mine has a lot more steps to it than Nanner's solution. But lets be honest here, compare "MONTH" with "REST OF YOUR NATURAL LIFE", no contest!

DS+Homebrew=mind boggling

I am pretty sure if I could figure out a way to take a brand new Nintendo DS loaded with an R4, homebrew, and a Metroid Fusion cartridge back in time to my young ten year old self, I'd be ruling the world today.

If you had access to that many games as a kid, I'm pretty sure the only thing you'd be ruling today is your mom's basement :)

stossmo, thanks for the heads up regarding the TRU sale. I'm checking it out now.

I say, disregard my last post as C3px's post is much better. I would say having a GBA is nice because the DS won't play old GBC and before games, but if you already have a GBC then I guess that isn't really an issue. :P

Heheh, that was pretty good.

I was thinking more along the lines of having futuristic technology rather than having shit loads of games. The DS blows away computers of the 1980s.

Do you know if DOSBox works on DS homebrew? Because playing Commander Keen and the old Duke Nukem side-scrollers on the go would be awesome.

Due to overwhelming demand after declaring myself a gamer, I am now going into "the details."

I was a PC gamer from the old Black and Green CGA graphics days.  My first VGA game was Monkey Island.  My last real PC game was Deus Ex or Deus Ex 2.  I played mainly shooters, adventure games, and StarCraft (I was going to say RTSs, but it was really just StarCraft).  I never had a console, but my Grandma Xhonzi always did, so I played Metroid and Zelda and Mario.  I was really excited about Halo coming out on PC, and then got very ticked when Microsoft bought Bungie and made it an Xbox exclusive.  I wasn't interested in Xbox anyways, but that ticked me off enough that I boycotted it.

And then I got married and got a real job.

Not having as much time anymore, I stopped gaming for a couple years.  I eventually picked up an Xbox when Halo 2 came out.  I found mostly games that my wife and I could play co-op together.  But little-by-little my gaming interests came back.  I bought a 360 in '06.  I stay about a year behind or so on games so I can pick them up for cheap.  (www.cheapassgamer.com if you don't know).  There are exceptions like Rock Band and Halo where I am willing to pay a little more knowing that I'll get my money's worth.

We also own a Wii because we are Middle America.  I really bought it to keep playing Metroid, Mario and Zelda.

You can find me on xbox live by the gamertag of 'xhonzi' (shocker!).  The last games I completed were Prince of Persia and my first playthrough of Halo Wars, which I'm going back through on Legendary.  We have people over to play Rock Band a couple times a month.  The wife and I have furious Peggle/Puzzle Quest contests that usually end with me sleeping on the couch.  And after many months I'm about 1/2 way through Gears of War 2 with my friend from Boston.  He has a wife and kids too (and a real job), so we have a hard time finding the time to chainsaw people in the face together.  That, and he's two timezones away.

I've never gone the handheld route, but C3PX has got me thinking.

Well, I'm sure nobody really cared, but that's the kind of gamer I am.

Xhonzi, you and I are a lot alike. I also tend to stay a generation behind to save money. I also stopped gaming when I finished school and got married, and later had my interest re sparked (thanks to a hand-me-down PS2 from a friend) and eventually bought a 360.

The DS with homebrew really is worthwhile, it is a lot of fun being able to play oldies like Monky Island and Doom on a device that fits in your pocket. As for Nanner mentioning its lack in ability to play regular Gameboy and GB Color games, you can just emulate those two. Just find a ROM for all the GB and GBC games you own and grab an emulator called lameboy. With the R4 they play flawlessly on the DS.

Xhonzi, since it sounds like you like Halo, do you have Halo 3 or ODST? We could co-op sometime.

How's your Halo-a-thon going?  I wouldn't say it's the greatest thing ever, but I am a big fan.  I worked at Barnes and Noble when the books started coming out.  I assumed that they were terrible and never game them much thought.  Then I was lurking in a Halo forum when Halo 3 was coming out and several people expressed this sentiment:

"I thought the books looked terrible.  Someone told me they were good.  I read them.  I really liked them!"

So, I gave them a shot and with a couple exceptions (The Flood, Contact Harvest) I have to say they are really good.  They have definitely increased my appreciation of the Halo Universe.  Heck, my wife even read (nay, devoured!) all of the books as well.

I may need someone to play ODST Co-op with, so we may have to set something up sometime.  What timezone are you in?  I'm in Mountain (GMT-7/6DST)

I also wanted to point out that I play on a 120" Front Projection screen with 7.1 surround sound.

I'm hardcore.

I know some guys really get obsessive over Halo. I am not like that at all, but it is a fun shooter and it really reminds me of the kind of sci-fi books I used to read as a kid. One of my good childhood friends has been a hardcore Halo fan since the release of the first game and he told me the books were fantastic, I wrote it off as the ramblings of an obsessive Halo fan. However, I did pick up and start reading The Fall of Reach a few weeks ago, and though I have not had the time to finish it, I am really enjoying it.

I am in central time (GMT-6). I'll send a friend request to your gamertag.

Some good deals at Gamefly this week on used games.  Halo Wars is definitely worth $15 if you're either a Halo fan or an RTS fan.  Don't know that I would recommend it otherwise.  Some other good titles.  I've ordered used from them and they're always fast and quality.

Thanks Xhonzi. I am now $15 dollars poorer. Still don't know how I feel about a console RTS, feels kind of like a crime against nature, but I have been wanting to try it out for a while.

Those are some good deals at Gamefly, I would have never thought to look there. FEAR 2 for 12.99, Resident Evil 5 for $19.99. They have Mirror's Edge for $9.99, not sure how good of a deal that is, but I can say I most definitely recommend that game to anyone who wants to try something unique.

I played through halo wars on the "normal" difficulty and thought it was a little too short.  I really liked it- I had just wished it was longer.  I decided I couldn't recommend people spend more than $20, but if they could find it for cheaper to jump on it.  At any rate, I started playing it on "Legendary" for the achievement and it's really kicking my trash.  It's forced me to dig much deeper and be much more strategic.  I'm about half way through and I've been winning by the skin of my teeth.  I've decided this is the way to play it- play through once semi-quickly to learn it & enjoy the story.  Play through again on the harder difficulty to get a real challenge.  And, like StarCraft, you should theoretically play 50x as much online as you do the campaign.

There were a couple times in my first playthrough that I found myself fighting the controls instead of the Covenant... but I think I'm totally past that now.

I'm also sort of playing Star Wars: Empire At War on my laptop.  I find that game to be harder to control with a mouse and keyboard than I find Halo Wars.

uncharted 2 is about as good as the reviews are saying it is...for all my ps3 heads

I thought about getting it, but I still haven't finished the first one (the puzzles get fucking hard!).

I did just trade in my old slim PS2 (I was lucky enough to find a 20GB PS3 on eBay, which has the PS2's Emotion Engine inside it so I can play any PS2 game I want on it - I also got a 320GB hard drive to replace the tiny one it came with), my Game Boy Advance SP and all its games (still have my trusty old Game Boy Pocket!), and several PS2/PS3 games ... all to get Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition and the extra $20 on a gift card.

I haven't gotten a chance to try out the DLC yet (I decided to start the game fresh, since I hadn't played it at all since August), but once I do I'll post a "review" of sorts of the DLC.  And for anyone wondering if the GOTY version has any other differences to it - it doesn't at all.  It's the exact same thing as if you yourself had the original and downloaded all 5 DLC packs, but it's bundled on one disc.

I'm considering getting Professor Layton and the Curious Village for the DS. Anybody played it?

dang, they are still charging $60 in the philly target....I would have definitely picked it up for $15

To bring back a discussion from a few pages back regarding Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, now that I have taken the time to play it, I can say that it is most definitely worth fifteen bucks. It is really a lot of fun, not worth full price, but for $15-20 I'd recommend it to MK and/or DC fans.

Noticed gamefly has it used for $19.99.
