I treat it like the Matrix: great first movie, good sequences in the second, confusing and forgettable third. I just ignore the last two, as the first is so well done as anything adding to it decreases its value to me.
Sorry, that's not very helpful to your edit. I really have no ideas on how to completely restructure the last movie.
