"New post" indicators stopped working

Author
Time

All day today (9/20), every time I come to the forums, all the folder icons are white, nothing in blue (using the OT Old School scheme).  When you go into each sub-forum, the threads with action in them have "first unread post" written down below the title but still all the folder icons are white, nothing color coded to indicate which threads have activity.

Is anyone else seeing this problem? I'm seeing forum and topic markers when new content is posted.

Well, looks like that didn't change anything. Davnes just posted in the Adywan Ep. V thread a couple of minutes ago and I haven't been notified. I checked the setting for receiving e-mail notifications and made sure I'm still subscribed to the thread and everything is unchanged.

I hope we can figure this out, cuz man... :S

E-mail notifications have nothing to do with markers that show what forums/topics are unread, so those settings don't affect that.

That said, I did find a problem with the form that controls e-mail subscription settings, so you might want to go back in and check that they're what they're supposed to be.

As for Ziz's original issue, I'm still seeing properly bolded text and blue folders when a forum has new posts. I checked in Firefox--the browser doesn't matter, by the way--and I'm seeing the same thing. Not sure what to tell you guys.

Ok, the problem  isn't just the indicators now.  I just went to the General SW forum and hit "Unread posts" on a thread I was in last night and it brought me back to the first unread post from over a week ago when the thread started (in case it makes a difference, it's the "Our Fault, Not George's" thread).

I'm using Firefox 3.5.3 but I upgraded to it before you upgraded the forum recently, and since this thread indicator issue only started for me in the past couple of days, I'm guessing the browser isn't the culprit.

Also, I just fired up the forums in IE, which I hardly ever use, and IT was even showing all the indicators white, nothing in blue, which means it thinks that everything has been read when, if I haven't used it in such a long time, the forums should come up as unread for the past few months.

The "first unread post" marker isn't updated unless you read the last page of the topic. If a topic is marked as unread and you view it, but don't view the last page, the first unread post remains what it was because viewing the last page is the trigger to reset that value. I'll probably rework this because it causes confusion. Ideally, it should take you to the page following the last page you looked at.

Actually, no. Topics showing up as unread or not has nothing to do with the browser. It's all tied to your account. If you login and read a topic in Firefox, then open IE and login, that topic will be marked as read--because you did, in fact, read it, just within another program. Topics are marked as read in the database and aren't tied to the browser in any way.

I did and everything looks normal. I know you're still looking into this. I've looked at the thread 005 started too and saw that you aren't getting e-mails either. :p

Tried that on a few threads - no go.

Hmmm...I'm now on the forums from my computer at work and the indicators work fine.  Did they get fixed or should I re-check my home machine?

Ok, I tried clearing the cache on the home machine - still nothing.  All indicators remain white no matter what activity in sub-forums or threads.

I can't find any problems that would cause this issue, Ziz. I'll keep investigating, but it's a mystery to me.

You cleared your cache. Did that include clearing your cookies as well (or at least deleting any cookies from originaltrilogy.com)?

Don't remember. At work now, only home machine is affected. Will try it later and let you know.

Ok, tried deleting just the cache - nothing.  Where do I go to delete just the OT.com cookies?  I'd rather not clear them all as all my other message boards (other sites) are all still working fine, and deleting all cookies means I have to go back and re-sign in to all those sites.

On Firefox for Windows, go to Tools > Options > Privacy. On Mac, Firefox > Preferences > Privacy.

Search for "originaltrilogy.com" and delete any cookies that come up.

FINALLY!!!  That did it.  I didn't delete ones that said "forumname" or "forumpassword" but I got rid of everything else.  Closed down FF and re-started it.  Came back to the forums and one had a blue indicator!  YES!

Eh....not quite.  It worked for that moment.  Shut down last night, came back on this morning and it's happening again - all white indicators.

Now what?

Ok, tried it that way last night and it worked immediately, but it worked immediately the first time.  Came back this morning and it's still working, but at this point I'm staying skeptical.  I'll report again over the course of the day.

If it worked more than once, that should be it, but let me know either way.

Ok, I think that did it.  I've been in and out of the forums three times today and got blue indicators every time.
