Some fixes here and there.

1.Removed the wound before the blast hits. Less centered shot.

2. New sublte sky to remove the stormy one. Added eyes to the rock face near luke.

3.New subtle sky to remove the flatness and add some depth. Removed Leia's mark from her back ( leia must be perfect :D ).New framed shot.

The new framing is kinda lost with the unfortunate cropping of the image, Angel

;-)

Can you repost them smaller so they fit? (I think 1050 pixels wide is safe).

No, he means that we can't see the images on the right because they're cropped by the new forum design.

Ah! sorry about that. I can see them correctly.

Well, there could be *some* shots that could have set extensions made...instead of cropping...but I know you know this, Angel. ;) Love what you're doing to the sail barge scene! :D

On the subject of the cimematography of ROTJ:

I had heard that they used some sort of proto type cameras for filming ROTJ...does anyone know if this is true? Becuase it sure looks that way! I'm not talking about framing but the actual quality of the image...there doesn't seem to be detail where there should be...the colors are off (of course there were some mishaps with the DVD release)...and some images just look too soft! I don't know enough about this stuff so maybe someone can educate me...?

Cap, this was one of the best explanations of ROTJ failures, thank you for that. "This is not Han Solo" was Kershner's sentence as well, after Ford said "I love you too" in the Bespin carbon chamber. So it was changed to "I know".

Obviously Marquand was not that kind of director. I've seen "The eye of the Needle" and it had too much overblown drama in details so every idiot could understand it as well.

Reading your post I just tried to think, well how can anybody fix this big issues? They are not cosmetics any more. And Ady said that "Jedi is going to be a mess". It really is, but I hope...still...

I saw Jedi first when I was 14. Then I was annoyed with Ewoks. Later I noticed that actors are talking to each other like they are in the middle of a big american city having ordinary day there, exept they wear strange wardrobe.

Why did this happen on Jedi and didn't on Empire? Was Marquand taking it all too lightly?

Why is the movie looking like "OK, everybody! I know the last one was seriously dramatic but now let's have some great fun! Hahaha! War can be really fun! Everybody shoots, but nobody dies because it's ... the fun show and y'know, it's only a movie! Hahaha"

And I would really like to read any kind of statement of Ady regarding this problems, if a great man is not too busy...

Greets to everyone here

As I've said before, ROTJ is my favorite movie, I never really liked ESB that much, its much too serious for a Star Wars movie. :P

Actually I'd say that shows the softer side of Han, and how much he's changed. The novel went to great length on this: he's not the go-it-alone type of guy anymore, after Luke and co. went to rescue him from Jabba he finally changed and did something for the greater good, becoming a formal member of the Rebellion, and since he already done so much for them they gave him a high rank although I suspect Leia has something to do with that.

A big part of why I love ROTJ so much is the maturing of the major characters: Luke is a Jedi (obviously), and is even willing to take a chance on his dad and offer him safety from the Empire despite what Obi-wan and Yoda think!

Han probably has the greatest growth in maturity, he is willing to risk his life for the Rebellion in the crazy sabotage on the shield generator, which culminates in his giving his beloved ship to Lando to use, even though he's not too sure about Lando coming back. That's no small thing for Han, and although it contains false foreshadowing that scene aboard the shuttle before they take off  shows that pretty clearly. He may love Leia but he really loves his ship.

And Lando is so impressed by Han, Leia and Luke's dedication to each other and the cause that he does the selfless thing and joins the Rebellion too. Of course that may end in his sacrifice in the Death Star in this or any other edit, but can we at least save the Falcon for Han? :p

Vader/Anakin of course is ultimately willing to do something unselfish, and dies for it.

The casualness of the dialog is to me like the so-called corniness of the dialog in the P: these guys are in some respect so used to doing what they do that this is just an ordinary thing for them. They watch out for each other and the mission, but everything else during the battle is no big deal. Like my friend put it in my sig :)

Ewoks: You got me there. :) I saw the Ewok movies first, when I was 7. I cheered when I first saw Wicket and friends in ROTJ. I saw ROTJ when I was 11,  and BTW its the only OT film I've ever seen in theaters (the SE in May 1997 after seeing the OUT in March). Since I was already familiar with the way the Ewoks did things, it was so much fun seeing them take on stormtroopers and help the Rebellion too. If Ady could incorporate elements from the Ewok movies to create new shots I'd love it.

Angel, you have an amazing gift. You bring out so much detail in the masks of the guards and you give Lukes caked on makeup a more natural look. Great work.

Thanks to 005 that pointed to me what a Ghoel is i ve noticed that the red dot behind it is actually a window.

Pretty much unnoticeable i had an idea to pop up it a bit since it helps the overal mood in the shot.

Since Luke arrives in the sunlight (doors open) the window behind jabba should be lit with day light.

I ve amazed myself how dramatically the mood changes and how the the set begins to have depth!

the below photos are the same, only the second row is zoomed to see better some details.

O ther shots with sunsets will be toned up a bit.

Oooh, I like that - putting Jabba in shadow is a good idea.  It makes him less campy and more threatening.

That's really cool! :) One of the best I've seen in a while.

Having to do the 'view image' thing is a slight hassle, but not a big deal. I'm sure it'll get sorted eventually. The thing now that's really annoying is that I'm not getting any e-mail notifications anymore! :(

My first reaction was, "Oh, come on, is that really necessary?"

My second was, "Yes.  Yes it is."

Then I finally actually thought about it, and came to the conclusion that there's no way Jabba would give her undergarments in that outfit anyway, and thought, "Well, it actually makes sense, believe it or not ... "

Again less stormy mood to have a uniform sky damn it.

You achieved the look of the characters being outside instead of being in a room with green screens around.

Alan Hume's directing a photography in ROTJ is VERY ordinary so to say, like boring, we see a lot of big clean pictures without any suggestions or mistery. And it is konsequent troughout the whole movie.

I think a lot of it has to do with the set design as well as the cinematography.. and the script.. and the acting.  It is almost a perfect storm of meh.

Another idea for consideration:

- why couldn't the Falcon and a more substantial fleet of fighters enter into the completely half-constructed area of the DS2 as opposed to a convenient shaft?  Would there be any way to take say the shot behind some of the X-wings in ANH, add the Falcon and show them heading to the construction side and enter into the DS2 that way?

“An entire legion of my best troops awaits them.”  Random thought:  If those are the Emperor’s best troops, an entire legion of his worst troops must be a truly hilarious sight to behold.

Now THIS would make for a good fan film!

  • “You Rebel scum.”  Random thought: that campy line was probably the highlight of that actor’s career.
  • I would concur that all such lines should be taken out.
  • Random thought: Imperial stormtrooper armor does not protect the wearer against blaster fire, thrown rocks, clubs wielded by teddy bears, or wooden arrows.  What, exactly, is it for?  Decoration?

  • “Freeze!  Don’t move!”  I’m not going to bother listing examples of spectacular incompetence by the stormtroopers in this battle, but this one particular moment is really awful.  First of all, what are these troopers trying to do?  Take prisoners?  In the middle of this battle?  And because they can’t see Leia’s hands, they assume she must be unarmed?  What, when the Emperor ran out of Jango Fett clones he started using Greedo clones?  And how does Leia manage to take out both of them while only firing one shot?
  • Shots could be made showing laser bolts, arrows, etc bouncing off to give the armor purpose.

And ditto on the stupid stormtrooper dialogue.

Well, they still don't look like they're green screen, and if it did, it would have been blue screen :-)

And really, they were at the mercy of the elements seeing as it was all location shooting for the Sarlacc scene except for the interior shots of the sail barge.

Part of the problem with Jedi is they went to the wrong desert.

Yuma just doesn't look as exotic as Lean's Jordan (or even Tunisia Lucas' favorite sandpit).

Most of the time we see Tatooine in ANH it's a real location shot, most of the time we see it in ROTJ it's a matte painting or a rather dull background plate with actors and models against blue screen and it shows.

Seeing as much of the location shoot was blocked in by sets and actors they should have gone out of their way to get more exotic background plates to frame both the models and studio footage.

Those elements don't really match the location shots anyway so they might as well have pushed the boat out.

Background plates don't have actors or vehicles so it wouldn't have cost that much to film and even some library footage would have looked better than some of the elements they used.

They were up against some bad weather but nothing compared to what Lucas had to face with ANH or TPM.

The real bad weather seems to have been in Lucas' private life which took away much of his love for Star Wars (not to mention the cost of Kersh taking the time to get things looking right the previous time around).
