You know who’s missing from this scene?

Palpatine.  He was born again on the way down.

But, what about the Ewoks that died?...

...or Biggs?...

...and the Rancor? -  She was good at heart...just misunderstood.

SHE?!?!?!?!??!!?

The line seals it.

Piett was about to clear them even with the older code and after hearing where they were going.  There is no hint of suspicion on Piett's part, IMO.  To me, the scene almost plays as if Piett goes through this all the time with Vader and is playing along as Vader stares off into the distance for a minute or two.  Why is Piett even doing this, since the Executor probably doesn't hang around the DS2 all the time.  Shouldn't the DS have its own group to handle this?

The new shuttle design comes from the idea that Vader and Palpatine should have executive shuttles and the Rebels having the same design for "parts and technical" seems rather odd.  You'd think they'd have an older shuttle to go with their older code, and for a design we've never seen until this movie (SE notwithstanding), it just makes sense to have an older/different design, at least to me.

Oh I'm all for varying the shuttles, I just don't agree with the reasoning necessarily. I think it's pretty clear that Piett does know something once Vader has joined him, you can see it in the look he gives.

Anyway, I was also swayed by the fact that it will be a hell of a lot easier to alter the Emperor's shuttle than Vader's or the Rebels.

As for why the Rebels do have the same design, well I prefer non-universe explanations for things like that; those being that the movie was made on a reasonably tight budget and it was easier to do that with the time and money they had.

I can see why they wanted to give the shuttle model a lot of screen time (it was expensive and it looked great) but shuttle says personnel to me and since the SE we have had the larger transporter which screams materiel at me.

It's sufficently obscured in ANH:SE to get away with using the cockpit of the shuttle as the cockpit of the transporter so all we would need would be a new model.

A new craft for the Emperor creates problems because the underside of the set would have to match any new model you make (which would mean not only making a new matte or model but designing one that matches the bottom of the shuttle).

Removing the shuttle status from the Tydirium frees up some nice shots of the model to use on Vader's landing or Palpatine's landing for added impact.

I don't think the Emperor's shuttle is hard too change. If anything, I would alter the fin and wings, to something more regal, both in design and even with colouring. That way I wouldn't need to touch the underside :-) which, as you say, would be difficult.

As for the other uses of it, I think it might just be too much work to do convincingly.

Venal, I've been thinking about Piett and your suspicion about his suspicion, and I guess you could be right that he would be suspicious since they are expecting this exact thing to happen.  I forget that the trap had been set a long time ago, and he may want to hold them to cut out that part of the trap that could fail (Piett being the pragmatist that he is).  Of course, in the end, Piett is right.  I love Piett.  Have you read how one of the ideas on this thread was for Piett to be a kind of tragic hero who also has a change of heart at the end and deliberately rams the Executor into the DS after the DS starts "firing at will" and hitting Star Destroyers along with Rebel ships?  It's one of my favorite ideas that would be hard/impossible to do, along with sacrificing Lando.

I'm not sure changing the shuttle type for Tydirium would be that hard, its in one or two mattes and a handful of shots against empty space or scenery that should be replaced by Angel mattes anyway.  I think Vader should have a plain white one and the Emperor should have the stripe on the front be more obvious or have more stripes (remember the different Lamba-class shuttles in TIE Fighter?)

Was digging through Wookieepedia and found this (View Image for even bigger):

Which seems to be a fairly high res image of the matte used in this shot:

Apparently the image comes from the ScreenThemes that were released a few years ago.  Anybody have that, could be useful for certain matte painters around here.

Angel, you think you could use that matte there?

That proves my theory. Perspective is wrong. the horizon lines dont much from the matte to AT-AT. not to mention that the AT should be Closer to the bridge.

Thanks 005. that was a matte that i was looking for , but these are not the cookies You are looking for

I'm sure Angel could use them, and I'm very interested in seeing them!

Looks a billion times better, but we may want to keep the walkway that short to match the live action shots.  May have to count the supports!

Glad to be of any service to you there V. Hope you can work your magic with them.

Good work yet again on the walkway (i never noticed the perspective problem there untill now that is). Can you do anything with animation of your images at all (if not then can i strongly suggest you try your hand at editing sometime between mockups)?????

Hello HotRod.....u sly witted monkey. Its really disturbing to know your always contantly lurking in the background though.

I still don't understand why you want to replace his hair?!

When we get older we lose hair, end of story.

Which is why I brought up this point a while back....

Haha dont worry i dont hate you at all. Was just an idea i had and did it, ppl found it funny whereas i didnt mean it in a humorous way just kinda get hayden/sebastian mix lol

Assuming that Yoda and Obi Wan are dressed in the same clothes they had on when they died, then logically, shouldn't Vader appear the same?

Not the most peaceful looking Jedi ghost... but whatever!

Actually, that last mockup with Vader there, even though that maybe a p*** take, thats how the jedi looked the moment they passed over. But its a Lucasfilm overused corney idea now, and should have been how it was done previously (erm, i mean with the DVD release maybees).

Is there a shift in power with the threads here lately? Perhaps, we're getting a little too far ahead of ourselfs now. No, it maybe just me.

But a Jedi remix is a pipedream at this moment in time and a lot of focus has drifted away from Empire (Revisited). Feet/ground.

Just saying....(or are we burnt out of ideas for Empire now, as we,ve touched on how collectively it can be perfect, and we all know Jedi needs/can include a lot of improvement?).

(EDIT) have i structured that point to make some sort of scence there?

I actually prefer that idea to the original version. It keeps Shaw in the shot while not confusing new viewers who would not recognise him without the Vader makeup and suit. Even if that's just a still shot of his head, a wizard like Adywan should be able to give it some simple animations and stick it on top of a Vader suit. It says "he's redeemed now, but these horrible things still happened and he still has to live... well not live, but incorporeally exist with that."

I personally wouldn't have a problem with Hayden being a ghost, if they'd reshot the unmasking/death scene with him too (and aged him accordingly and given him some acting talent). It would at least have added some much needed continuity that way.

Part of my problem with him replacing Shaw is due to his awful performance in the prequels. If he'd done a good job, and we saw him as the kind spirited Jedi we'd always assumed Anakin to be, seeing him in ghost form would not only be forgivable, but an improvement on what we currently have - someone who is alien to those who have watched the films in chronological order.

That child molester grin Hayden has in the final shot doesn't help either. What a way to end a saga.

Thats HotRods job to come up with the funnys. You concentrate on the mockups.

(But i giggled like a virgin girl when you shoot em a compliment there, with that reply V) ;-P

I also linked that with a reference to our receptionist/wizards sleeve statement i heard in work the other day (kids dont ask! Its rude).
