When OOT films were released on video

I’m trying to figure out the various release dates of the OOT on video etc.

I know ANH was rereleased in 1985 but I don’t know when it was released before then and I don’t know much about the releases after then before 1995 except that European widescreen for the trilogy was in 1991 and there was also Euopean vhs in 1994.

I don’t know much about when ESB was first released on video or it’s rereleases before 1995.

I know ROTJ was first released on vhs in 1986 but I don’t know much about its rereleases before 1995.

I know laserdisc for at least ANH started in 1989 and that the trilogy got released on laserdisc in 92, 93 and 95.

I read something that implied Star Wars on video was scarce between 83 and 91 or 95. That surprised me. Anybody know anything about that?

Anybody know anything about the release years/dates for OT on vhs before 1995? Original and rerelease.

Also, I read somewhere that the release date for the 95 “One Last Time” release was August 25. Does anybody know if that’s right?

The 1982 rental tape was the first domestic home video release, on vhs.  I own it is noteworthy considering the later re-issues from 1985 contained the new 85 digital stereo remix for Episode IV, star wars.

The 1982 vhs, and 1985 CAV laserdisc are also noteworthy because they would be the first and last time the original 35mm stereo mix would be made available from the 1977 theatrical run, the mono and six track never got an official release period.

I've bought star wars so many times on video, that i have contributed in a small way to making Lucas a richer man, i'm somewhat ashamed to admit the amount of copies i have on vhs, ced,betamax, laserdisc, vcd, and dvd.

No i have never owned the movies in super8mm, 16mm or 35mm, though i do have trailers for empire and jedi in 35mm.

I have never gotten into fringe formats like the vhd releases only in japan, or pal releases on laserdisc or vhs except for the first issue uk releases in pan and scan, and the first issue french laserdiscs non thx.  Then i have the japan special collection for all three original films and both the us and japan release for the definitive collection,lol. Also owning virtually every us pressing on laserdisc.

The first issue laserdiscs where slighly sped up due to time compression, had no digital sound, and to this day many have succumbed to laser rot.  Were in pan and scan 4:3. Had a lot of noise in the picture, even worse on the widesreen letterbox.  Which is why they were color corrected under the thx program and put through a process of digital video noise reduction, which caused other side effects and artifacts noticeable on the gout.

That article is useful but I don't think it mentioned the 1985 VHS ANH at all, which is a major omission considering that was a new soundtrack.

Do you know if they remixed the sound for any of the other two films around that (mid 80s) or just ANH?

I read this claim that Star Wars on video was rare down until the 90s and that doesn't seem to fit with that article.

I sold my Limited Edition trilogy DVD and that Bonus Material from the 2004 boxset two days ago. STAR WARS is done for me.

I don't even care when it's released onto Blu-ray disc. There's a different Trilogy of which I'm anticipated more on Blu anyway which is from Lucasfilm Ltd. which is Indiana Jones.

I'll even freely admit I'm way more of a fan of Indiana Jones compared to Star Wars anyway. I even rightfully enjoyed KotCS and that's my own fucking opinion. I even sold my DVD of it to get around to buying it on Blu-ray disc. What's that? I can't like KotCS since it's not like the other three films? I have my own damn opinion thank you kindly.

Does anybody know about any releases not mentioned in that article sky linked me to?

They got the Ken Films ESB and ANH. Plus Kenner ANH. Plus 1982 ANH video. !984 ESB video. 1985 laserdisc ESB and ANH laserdisc (but they don't mention the 1985 vhs ANH). 1986 ROTJ. Advertsement as ttrilogy in 1988. Trilogy box set 1990. ESB and ANH on laserdisc 1989. ROTJ laserdisc 1990. 1992 widescreen vhs box. ANH rerealse laserdisc 1992. Definitive collection 1993 laserdisc (jesus, I had no idea it was 250 fucking dollars!)  1995 One Last Time release of the trilogy.

And that's all the OOT in the article. Were there more releases apart from that between 82 and 95?

Hey, I wasn't mistaken in thinking there was a 1985 VHS release of ANH, was I? It wasn't just laserdisc?

Suggestion: maybe below your original post you should put a listing down of what you do know in a clear/concise manner, with notes if you'd like.  Then folks can easily see what gaps you have and fill them in for you.  Or correct you where something is wrong.  Like this:

That was a strangely pointless post. Not knocking it, half my posts are pretty pointless, but this is such an amusing post, I feel strangely compelled to pointlessly respond to it.

I actually agree with you Gryphon, I gave up on SW a long time ago. I am not even sure if I would even really be all that excited if I heard the original unaltered trilogy was being given a wonderful restoration and being released on Blu-ray. But I could also equally care less about Indiana Jones. For some strange reason I bought a used copy of KotCS for $2.99 the other day, and now I am trying to figure out what to do with it... the thought of actually trying to watch it a second time kind of makes my stomach hurt, but I am sure I will eventually find a way to put it to good use.

Just strange that your post sounded so defensive, as far as anyone here is concerned, you are free to like or not care about anything you want.

Also I am glad to hear you don't a f***. Celibacy is a long and hard road, it is not for everyone, but I hear it can lead to good things and be very rewarding.

Eh, I made it sound defensive more since I'm frustrated with my series burn-out of the Star Wars "disenfranchise". I got especially pissed off when the new Indiana Jones game wasn't being released on the HD video game consoles and only the other ones. The Force Unleashed gets released onto the HD vidya consoles and not Indiana Jones? Well fuck you very much LucasArts.

I have the Indiana Jones Trilogy in 720p format but I'm trying to figure out how to make them into AVCHD's. HAHAHA, no, I do not have any Star Wars anymore, except for a few random video games, especially Knights of the Old Republic.

So yes I still wouldn't give a shit if Lucas fully restores the OOT and releases it on Blu-ray with every other version. Would I buy it? Possibly but not for a long while after it's released. I'd much rather have Willow and Tucker released onto Blu-ray first. My reasoning for Indiana Jones still stands.

Well I still care about the OOT. And will continue to care. Lucas's bullshit certainly makes me tired of present-day Star Wars, but it shouldn't affect how I feel about the original. Indy 4 wasn't as bad as a lot of people seem to think it was, but it was certainly a bit castrated and prequelized. It just doesn't rank with the classic Indy trilogy.
