This is the criterion captured set, so of course the video comes from the recalled/banned out of print CAV editions.

The Lowry remaster did not even exist when ff did this set, only the non restored but correctly colored special editions.

The criterion release to me is the ultimate release, it is well worth the money owning the laserdiscs as they will never be issued on dvd or blu ray.  Not sure but as far as i know these are the only terrence young approved transfers. When UA/MGM decided to modern colorize the films under lowry not to the specs of the director or original cinematographers.   Maybe they will put version that looks like the films looked and sounded in theaters, but it is highly doubtful.  There is good reason why the first issued dvd's are getting collectors prices.

Never mind that many of the Lowry dvd's and blus are complete botch jobs up there with the 2004 star wars trilogy release.  They got a cleaner looking picture but the color timing is all wrong, or they got the aspect ratios wrong like on goldeneye.

Unless you are lucky enough and rich enough to own ib technicolor prints of the connery films you will never really be able to experience the films as they were intended to look.

The Lowry attempts are overly bright and have the colors saturation turned up, I know for instance License to Kill did not look lie that in theaters.  The first dvd release even with ts faded colors was a closer approximation.

What they should be aimng for on home video like blu ray is filmlike quality with the grain intact, the colors where they should be and so on.  The Lowry attempts make the films look like modern video shot movies.

When i bought the pal release of frwl and it had this ugly blue tint on the night scenes i wanted to throw the dvd in the trash.
