I'm wondering why so many people keep referring to the shaft in Palpatine's throne room as the reactor core. That's not what it is at all, unless you're suggesting we can see 450km down that thing. Let's remember that the throne room is atop a very tall tower, and I reckon that shaft only reaches to the actual surface of the Death Star. At a standard Earth gravity, which is clearly how all the ships in Star Wars seem to work, it would take Palpatine three hours to hit the reactor core.

Pasted from the databank on the official Star Wars website:

"Darth Vader, returned to the light side of the Force, and hurled the Emperor into the Death Star's reactor core, killing him."

So whether it makes sense or not (like hearing explosions in space) it is a part of the Star Wars canon.

Canon is what we see and understand from the movies and not what explained later from official sites of GL.

True, we didn't have Ric Olie standing there saying "that's the reactor core you're throwing him into."

However that's the best explanation I'd be able to come up with myself for what the shaft was.

Maybe not the MAIN reactor, but some kind of reactor, due to the vast energy contained within.

That's really funny to me.  I'm just imagining him waiting for the impact and it taking FOREVER.

Remember when the EU had all "Good" Jedi disappear and all "Dark" Jedi explode like Palps?  That was odd.  Do they still do that?

Bingowings-

I'm not sure if Jabba's Palace needs less screen time it definately needs a change of tone.

I agree with that totally.

Why didn't Yoda talk to Luke after he died like Ben did?

Also, how about at the end of ESB, have a scene where Boba drops off Han to Jabba's palace.  He would just walk him with a sunset behind him with sad music playing.  You wouldn't have to show that it was Jabba's Palace because it would be a mysterious ending.

Actually, Palpatine explodes around the bottom of the lift shaft. That is, after all, what the long tube running down is, the lift up to the throne room. So let's all amuse ourselves with the thought that Palpatine comes crashing down into the foyer and goes boom in front of the lifts. Just by the water cooler.

And Ghost, I don't think keeping Jabba's Palace secret would really achieve anything, seeing as we all know that's where he was taking him. I'd just keep it out of Empire all together; the Palace and everything there belongs in Jedi. I hate mixing up the movies, it ruins their individual aesthetics.

Great work!

But it looks more like the footbridge we see Luke on (later on) than a lack of roof set (?) The camera is just under that footbridge, that's all (a nice trick to not make a roof set though :) I agree!)

Love the lights, the sparks, the reflections, but I think TMBTM is right, its makes sense that its the Footbridge to Nowhere.

The black looks like a matte, I admit, but its empty.  Why would they take the time to matte out the rest of the set by hand and not put anything there?  Also, it seems rather random with its extensions down.  It is odd that it lines up perfectly with where you made those pieces light up though...  Maybe they framed the shot under the bridge to cover the set from that angle?

Vader's head, hand, and feet go OVER this black area.  I think it actually is an unfinished matte!  The lines are too straight across that pole area to be simply unfinished set.  They tried to cover it up by starting a matte, but not finishing I guess.  If they wanted it to be interpreted as the bridge, they wouldn't have had to rotoscope Vader's body parts over it, they could have just splashed more black and be done with it.

One could go with either Angel's awesome fix, or just unrotoscope Vader from in front of it and have it be the interpretation TMBTM saw.

Thanks to Bobocop, you can watch this over and over and over and over...

If Ric Olie didn't explain it, it didn't happen.  That's why only EP 1 exists, and everything else (including this forum) is a figment of my imagination.

Thank the maker that Ric Olie was in the hospital room to say "TV's Frink was just born!"

In the Emperor's death scene, we can replace the poor "tunel" cylinder matte and add some more interactive and alive.

Having hallways leading to nowhere is a bad idea. I can think a system like big magnets that spinning slowly around the cylinder axis and cause that awesome humming that throne room has. having magnets or whatever looks organic and moving we can reduce the repeated style of a shaft (TMP ANH ESB ROTJ).

Nice found on the Vader's hand over the matte, doubleofive!

Obviously Angel's version is the way to go for ROTJ:revisted.

(Still I'd like to have a clear vision where exactely is that bridge in the throne room, because my "bridge version" could be good from a continuity point of view.) I'm sure some of you can find a drawing of the throne room. Like this one (but more focused on the throne room):

Angel, you are going to be the end of Lucasfilm LOL

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I noticed that when I was doing my Lando Sacrifice video.  Made me sad.  Nice job fixing it!

Now thats a sequence that i HOPE ady will make a new prop for it. Awesome work there Bingo ;)

Helloooo im an empty reactor with nothing in a 50 miles range.

Btw i was watching Armageddon yesterday. how about to do something similar to DS destruction? I mean some close shots on surface that we see explosions and hull cracks (ala trade fed ship destruction) then we cut into some hangar shots when luke leaves. some destruction cut to lando fails/lives and then a big explosion like armagedon.

You will have a rough mockup in a moment.

Quick but it shows how ROTJ has the obsession to center all things plus no dynamic shots at all.
