The transition idea could be very doable you could see a ROTS style Star Destroyer wipe into a ANH/ESB style Destroyer etc, etc and finish with Vader and Palpatine looking at the construction of the Death Star surrounded by Imperial ships showing that it was built closer to the timeframe of ANH than ROTS. (a bit like the end sequence of the Enterprise finale where we saw Enterprises D, NCC1701 and NXwhatever only in reverse http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXotJu1CapU&feature=related).
It would also serve as a bookend for the celebration montage at the end of ROTJ, instead of seeing the defeat of the Empire playing out over space we'd see the growth of the Empire over time.
