It just wasn't possible to make Luke scream (the original intent, but limited by technology and budget) in 1979. So, it was top of the list of things to chang in 1996. And then it was possible to remove it again in 2004.

Seriously. Even though I think his obsession with burying the OOT is douchebagish to the extreme, part of me wants to say 'but at least Lucas is consistent in his ideals about the filmmaker's vision' then he goes and does seemingly random stuff like this.
