Did a quick search, didn't look like anyone's ever posted this before.

Wouldn't hurt.  Maybe Criterion will have better luck getting through to GL than the fans have had.  Criterion has cleaned up films that are in worse shape than Star Wars and done an excellent job of it.

And I think a filmmaker would have to be crazy to pass up an offer from Criterion, but maybe that's just me...

Just wanted to point this out beforehand

Just because its Criterion, doesnt mean its quality....Criterion has put out plenty of DVDs that have been subpar when compared to other versions available. Another note is that not every Criterion release is Anamorphic (Robocop)

Also if we take GL at his word (which we all know is BS) there are no prints of the original trilogy available anymore, as they were "all" used to make the SEs....but would be interesting to see how far he would be willing to go to keep this lie alive

How anybody is expected to believe that, I have no idea. As if, as if the material not used for the Special Editions wasn't preserved after the efforts they went to to clean up those very prints in order to then produce the Special Editions.

That's why the bullshit excuses about why the appalling transfers of the Theatrical Editions on DVD are so aggravating - "we really struggled to find prints that were up to the job".  Er, right.

Criterion have made their mistakes (particularly in the early days) but their recent releases have been above reproach - definitive editions all, with anamorphic transfers wherever appropriate and perfectly judged extra features.

The question isn't so much 'should they' do it, as 'could they'. And for the moment the answer is no - sensitive archivists like the Criterion guys simply don't mix with the multi-million cash cow likes of the Star Wars franchise. It would take a heroic measure of generosity on the part of LFL to relinquish control in that way - not exactly something they're famous for (hell, they wouldn't even accept Robert Harris' offer of free consultation on a restoration, so what hope is there?)

If the original elements are indeed destroyed as GL says, then how can they pull off releasing the OT in 3D like they are planning eventually?

What he meant was that the original elements that were replaced or alterend for the 1997 special editions were discarded.  All the restoration efforts went towards the new versions.

So when we see it in 3D, we'll get to see Vader's pink lightsaber, pink laser blasts...I better stop there, that's another discussion lol
