hey, im back. threads have just been real dry lately. anyways...

i was watching the entire saga in order, one through six, and thought of something. don't u think vader would be a little pissed at luke because wouldn't vader blame him for padme's death? out of his own dark anger of course.

All Vader knows is that "in [his] anger [he] killed her", which really has nothing to do with her (a) dying in childbirth or (b) of a broken heart.  It is unknown how he officially figures out that Luke is actually his son, because also as far as he knows, the child(ren) died also.

Vader blames himself, which it is his fault really.  However in a better prequel, the Jedi should have been blamed for her death, justifying Vader's role in the Purge and driving him further away from his friends, instead of him blaming himself and being emo about it.  DRIVE him to the dark side, don't let him kick the dirt and say "aw shucks, I killed my wife, might as well be angry at everything that moves!"

As others have said, "Skywalker" could be a very common name.  Maybe that's why Lucas added the "hey, this Skywalker kid you're chasing is actually YOUR kid!" to the hologram scene.  I still don't like it in the scene, but I'm beginning to understand.

Vader actually learned about Luke's full name from another Rebel that Vader had captured and interrogated.  So at the time of Empire, Vader already knew that Luke was his son.  The reason he asks (in the 2004 DVD version) "how is that possible?" is because he is still a bit astounded that he has a son even though he knew Padme had died.

If Skywalker was a common name, knowing his last name wouldn't help very much. ;-)  And that's EU, the average person shouldn't have had to read that comic or have the prequels contradict what was already known.

Not that big a deal, and little to do with ESBR.

"That's it, and I'm sure Skywalker is with them. Set your course for the Hoth system."  -Vader, beginning of Empire.

"We have a new enemy: the young rebel who destroyed the Death Star. I have no doubt this boy is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker."

"How is that possible?"  -Emperor Palp and Vader during the hologram scene in Empire.

Vader already knew he was chasing Luke; it even says so in the yellow lettered background blurb in the beginning of the movie. I think he was playing dumb to the Emperor, after all, Vader tries to recruit Luke to help overthrow Palpatine in the Cloud City duel, so he wouldn't want to reveal to Palpatine just how much he knows about Luke.

We are a way for the cosmos to know itself.

this was the line that was in the novel. it would've fit the story much better. of course, there was the EU, i support btw. but if ur going off those who don't read the EU, the line would fit better.

instead of vader saying, "And im sure skywalker is with them!" he should've said, "And im sure the jedi is with them!"

or just take that line out entirely.

Why? The revisionist dialogue is almost as poorly-delivered as it is written; why bother changing the storyline to allow for it? That Vader is aware of Skywalker's identity is supported not only by the line of dialogue that you would change, but also in the opening crawl:

The evil lord Darth Vader,
obsessed with finding young
Skywalker, has dispatched
thousands of remote probes into
the far reaches of space...

So I don't really see how the dialogue you quoted above would've "fit the story much better" when the story itself would have to be altered or gutted to allow for it!

I figured that he was also trying to protect Luke from the Emperor.

It's a bit hard playing dumb with a guy you know can read your mind.

I thought the whole Sith dogma thing was designed to avoid all this.

Palpatine knows Vader is plotting against him (he wouldn't be doing his job if he wasn't) it's an unspoken given when someone in one of Mario Puzo's books or in one of Graves' Claudius books refers to another character as "My friend" you know one of them will have plans to kill the other.

Having Vader play dumb is too dumb for a character like Vader.

Oh, them whacky Sith... they always gotta be one-uppers, trying to one-up each other! Too bad Darth Maul never got his chance!

it's funny, i'd never given it a lot of thought,  but it certainly puts a new spin on Empire strikes Back, All Vader knows is that "in [his] anger [he] killed her",

the existence of a son means Vader knows the Emperor lied (from a certain point of view) about Anakin killing Padme,  it also means the Emepror knows that Vader knows he lied to him about Padme's death, adds a bit more tension to  an already  interesting dynamic.

But does Vader know that the Emperor knows that Vader knows that the Emperor lied?  And does the Emperor know that Vader knows that the Emperor knows that Vader knows that the Emperor lied?  And does Vader know that..........my head hurts.

One thing that's bugging me a bit about some of these (otherwise very lovely) window mock-ups is the sharp focus.  Unless you're intentionally going for a Welles/Bogdanovich deep-focus shot (which strikes me as out of place here, especially if this is just, pardon the pun, window dressing) wouldn't it be preferable to soften the focus a bit?

Thoughts?

Indeed, also you might want to make sure they don't distracting. That's one of the main problems with adding cgi to something that didn't have any in the first place, it sticks out and distracts from the characters.

Yeah, Anakin was always quite daft, so I guess it makes sense to change Vader's character a bit to follow suite.

"How is this possible? The man who pulled the wool over the eyes of the galaxy for all those years, and manipulated me and lied to me personally countless times told me she had died, so there is no doubt she had really died. Since galactic technology is pretty low tech and primitive, there is absolutely no way the baby could have been saved by medical means... oh man! I am so confused! Ooooh, my head hurts! Ouch, gotta stop trying to force myself to think so hard! Gotta go meditate on this."

Was Vader unaware that Luke was his son or did he know and want to recruit him from the start?

I am genuinely confused. This seems an important bit of canon, but it is explained very hazily.

The SE made it confusing.

After ANH Vader learns the name of Luke Skywalker and is obsessed with finding him. Unless Vader is a complete moron (which the prequels and SE try to make you believe) there's no way he didn't know Luke was his son. His actions wouldn't make sense otherwise.
