I don't know if any of you want this movie or not but Walmart has it for only $10 right now,I know we all read that it did not have the greatest transfer and all,but $10 is damn cheap, and it still looks a lot better than the DVD.

I think we should use this thread to let each other know of these great deals,Best Buy runs them all the time as well as Target and I am sure others.

I forgot to give the title LOL,it is Robocop.

I saw that the other day, and almost bought it ... but then decided I wouldn't watch it enough to justify it.  I deliver pizza for $6.55 an hour, for Christ's sake, and I only get 3 to 5 hour shifts 3 to 5 days a week at best ... I don't have the money to waste on things I won't use often.

Well, I took half a plunge into BluRay - I got a BD drive for my computer, which I will eventually run a cable to the TV.  For $80, I figured it was a good deal compared to a stand alone player, even a Magnavox or Sylvania for $170.

So, what movies SHOULD I get on Blu?  For moment earlier this week, I was debating buying Watchmen on Blu because it has more supplemental features than the standard DVD, but of course Murphy's Law struck and I bought and opened the standard disc last night, so I can't return it now.  I'll get the Ultimate cut on Blu in December.

I'm not looking to re-buy my entire collection, I'd rather be more selective.  Comedies and dramas don't need Blu.  (Ok, maybe the Remastered Godfather box set qualifies, but that's it.)

Suggestions?

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

By all means get the Close Encounters of the Third Kind bluray set.  It has all three versions of the film in very well remastered 1080p plus tons of great extras.  & it can be had for a steal of a price if you shop around.  Others I have that look great are The Dark Knight (even switches aspect ratios in film, mimicing the IMAX release, highly reccomended), 2001: A Space Oddyssey (looks fantastic & is a HUGE improvement over either dvd version), Transformers, The Searchers (Robert A. Harris did this restoration if i'm not mistaken.  looks great).  If you liked Crystal Skull, the bluray is really nice.  A Nightmare Before Christmas is decent as well.   From what i hear, the Casablanca set is really nice & the Lawrence of Arabia bluray should be fantastic as it's the restored version that was SUPPOSED to be on dvd but somehow only wound up on the superbit realease...

I have CE3K, DK KOTCS and ANBC on standard, and I'd like to avoid double-dipping, at least for a while.  Picked up 2001 - FYE had it on sale for $10, which is a great deal even for them.  Already had that on standard, but a friend didn't, so I'm giving the standard disc to him.  Money aside, I'm trying to avoid double-dipping because my regulard DVD player is upconverting, so I figure it's close enough until I find deals on various Blu discs that do warrant upgrading.

I'm going to see what FYE has in their used section over the course of the week and see if something hits me.

If you don't have the 3-disc CE3K DVD, then the Blu-Ray is still worth the upgrade.

And The Dark Knight's shifting aspect ratio isn't OAR - IMAX's aspect ratio is 1.44:1 (preserved on the IMAX Prologue bonus feature on the Batman Begins Blu-Ray), while the Blu-Ray crops this to 1.78:1 (16:9) to fill a widescreen television.

The 35mm scenes are shown in their proper 2.39:1, though.

No, I do have the 3 disc CE3K.

Maybe I'll rent Dark Knight on Blu and see what you mean about the aspect ratios.

Well I just picked up American Psycho and The Usual Suspects on Blu-ray at Walmart for only $10 a piece, have not wqatched them yet but I am sure they will be better than their DVD versions.

Also scored Dead Space Blu-ray on sale at Best buy for only $12.99.

Oh, forgot to mention - a few weeks ago DeepDiscount had one of their 25% off coupon codes, and had Blu-ray on sale for up to 55% off, so I ended up getting the Blade Runner 5 disc (non-suitcase) and CE3K boxes for a grand total of $43, free shipping.

Yeah, I know the imax scenes are cropped to 16 x 9, which is why i said it mimics the imax presentation.  It's still a really cool feature.   And while it would be nice to have the full frame imax sequences, someone (i don't remember if it was Nolan, or someone else working on the film) makes an interesting point in one of the special features.  They're talking about the Imax format, how big the screen is, and how the human eye works.  They said that, basically, the screen is so tall that the top third of the frame is only in your periferal vision.  So when framing shots, they pretty much "threw away" the top third of the frame.  Which was not to say that they didn't pay attention to what was there, but that they didn't put anything crucial to the shot in the top 3rd.  Which is pretty much the part that gets cropped off for the bluray.  So, again, while it'd be nice to have the whole frame available, i don't really feel like i'm missing anything important after watching that feature.  (& i'm normally a real stickler for things like preserving the original aspect ratio).

I agree for the most part, but what's interesting to me is that when I saw the opening sequence in 1.33:1 on HBO recently, they used a lot more of the frame than the Blu-Ray did - they only cropped a bit off the sides.

I'd like to know if the full-frame DVD did the same thing, because I'd like to make a DVD that shifts from 2.39:1 to 1.33:1 - still cropped a bit, but I feel (on a large 4:3 TV, anyway) that would mimic the feel of the IMAX presentation much better.  But it'd be a 4:3 DVD instead of a 16:9, and definitely wouldn't be in HD.

I'd just use the IMAX footage bonus feature on the DVD, but that A) pillarboxes it to fit in a 16:9 frame, and B) only includes the six "major" sequences, and not the other shots that were done in IMAX that are peppered throughout the film (including the scene where Alfred burns the letter, if I recall, which is quite sad).
