There are certainly some things that surpass the original in terms of believability and continuity. (which even LFL addressed to a certain extent in the SEs; one being adding ropes around Han's legs when he's trying to pull Lando back up into the skiff)

I do believe Lucas would watch the Death Star battle, for instance, and think 'that's how I wanted it to look!' I've always felt the original looked timeless (I'd watch it on TV and think 'I can't believe this is so old!'...despite it being released the year I was born, haha), but the ANH:R version just makes it even more fresh.
