Something I just noticed in Adywan's list of corrections...

adywan said:

...140 - The window at the back of Vader's cockpit has been blacked out because there should be no window...

...154 - When Vader spins out of control you can now see stars through his cockpit windows...

Is this a typo?

I'm taking it that the window Ady is referring to is the one that could be directly behind Vader, as opposed to the ones above him.  In the regular TIE fighers, the pilot area is just a pod, with the engines on either side.  With Vader's TIE, the pod has a tube with wings connected behind it (which means that any portal directly behind him, be it a door or a window would be blocked).  The windows in top (the 4 long rectangular windows) are indeed present on both versions of TIE fighters.

Monroville is right:

I guess I'll throw my two cents worth out there....please ditch the star trek "praxis" ring. please.

The Praxis ring is in the Stargate explosion he used to replace the original.  He'd have to find yet another explosion to replace it with in that case.

Why not composite all the "Praxis" rings together to see what you get? It doesn't seem Adywan can really please everyone with this scene, as opinions on it are quite diverse. I might have a quick go at combining the SE ring with the (original) Praxis ring AND the Stargate ring and see what we get. :-)

Gotta say that I personally liked the 'praxis ring' for bigger impact overall.

In fact, although I love the enhanced Death Star explosion and recolouration that Adywan came up with, I actually missed the WHOOOSH of the SE impact ring coming towards us, being included in that too!  Some aren't keen on them, but I just happen to think they add to the 'scale' of things somewhat.

Hey, it's neat to get a chance to add to the ANH:R thread about something again!  I like your 'EU' take on Adywan's Battle Droid by the way doubleofive.  :)

I like them when used sparingly, but when every major explosion has them, they just look gimmicky. The main problem is they never look natural; all the original explosions are real, practical explosions, but CG explosions often don't work, especially those rendered some years ago.

I don't see what' s wrong with the original explosion. The praxis ring looks way too CG and doesn't fit in with the rest of the movie. Everyone I've watched this with has pointed it out.

I agree.  I really don't like that praxis ring from the SE.    Adywan did seem to improve it though.  The ring seemed to stick out less amidst the larger explosion.

When I first saw Star Trek VI, I thought, cool!  I've never seen an explosion like that before.  Now every time I see a praxis ring explosion, I just think, oh it's that same explosion again.

I think a shockwave in any form is a good idea.  It seems in the original that Alderaan just sort of popped like a balloon when hit, which I don't think works very well for a planet.  Since the Death Star is basically overpowered reactor and metal, I think its alright and even more dramatic when it just pops.

A shockwave from an explosion in SPACE, which is a vaccum, wouldn't be pancaked into a narrow ring. If you're going to show a shockwave in a vaccum have it radiate in all directions at once. IMO much more believable that way.

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

I think the original looked best from a purely aesthetic point of view.  I think vbangle is right, but we shouldn't forget that we needn't be 100% scientifically accurate in what we prefer in a piece of entertainment, and that we all have different preferences.

Let's not forget that a real explosion in space would be silent.  Hands up for a silent Death Star explosion!

No one?  I didn't think so....

I actually think a spherical shock wave (for the Death Star) would look better regardless of the science also a ROTJ style momentary egg crack before the big boom would be nice.

Alderaan should have a different effect. I rather like the idea of it seeming as if it be slammed by the beam and shatters like a conker.

The Death Star is blowing up from the inside where as Alderaan is being smashed from the outside.

^A "scientific" cut of the movie would be interesting.

Interesting but impossible.  No lightsabers, no sound in space, no "the force", no voices from dead mentors, no nothing.

Unless, we postulate that scientific rules have changed in the future.  In which case anything would become possible again, and we'd be back to the same old SW without any changes being needed...

Lots of people hear the voices and take them to be dead people asking them to do something.

There may be a scientific explanation for Force powers (but not lifeforms living inside all cells unless they are a very exotic form of life that aren't built on cells themselves) and belief in something isn't the same as something actually existing.

We don't know how lightsabers work (plasma blades contained inside a force field might be possible for a civilisation capable of faster than light travel).

No sound in space but there would still be sound inside ships caused by shock waves travelling through space.

So it's possibly doable, if someone wants to.

There's no current scientific explanation for any of those things, so you'd have to make one up, so you could make one up for anything, so you could include anything, because you'd have no criteria by which to exclude anything, so anything still goes.

Back to square one.  The original film.

It would be interesting to see how a battle droid would function without the remote assistance from a Trade Federation Ship.  One would argue that Palpatine gave the order to have all of the Trade Federation droids shut down.  Then again, he also gave the famous "Order 66" to the clone army to kill all the Jedi, and in the book "Dark Lord: Rise of Darth Vader" it was revealed that not every clone trooper followed that order.

That being said, I look forward to your fan fic about that battle droid head in Adywan's fan edit.

It's a shame a HD 1920 x 1080P version isn't available. The DVD-9 version is nice but looks kinda dated now that HiDef  is the new standard.

Any hope of resurrecting this?

HD was standard when he did it. But it's to hard to work in 1080 they say. ESB will be 720

I actually think the DVD 9 holds up pretty well compared to HD, especially when upscaled.  I can see the difference, but it's not huge IMO.

He started doing ESBR in 1080 but even with his new QuadCore it was taking forever, plus the higher res limits the amount of sources he can pull bits and pieces from to fix and update the FX, since the quality difference would be that much more obvious.

My outlook on life - we’re all on the Hindenburg anyway…no point fighting over the window seat.

The one change that would be happening would be re-adding the spinning starfield.

:)

That made me tear up a little. Whenever I watch SW:R I have to spin my head to the side at that shot, and frankly it's starting to hurt my neck.

Fan fic should be fun, though true be told I never liked that battledroid in there. I think a pit droid would have been more appropriate, ah well.
