They probably shot closeups of a stand-in's hands doing it (probably second-unit), and were going to film more with Hamill later on, then decided to scrap the sequence altogether.

I always pictured the scene (perhaps because of the novelization) with a close-up of his hands building the saber, and then his head being visible only after he's pulled his hood forward, saving his identity reveal for later at Jabba's Palace.

Remember the montage of second-unit-hands-building-stuff from every A Team episode? It's probably like that.

If done right... with some nice Star Wars music in the background, that would be my favorite Star Wars scene of the last 25 years! Could be epic :)

John Williams composed music for that scene already- it's on the most recent ROTJ CD releases. :-)

I was thinking of having the tail end of this in my relocation of Ben's ghost to his old hut idea.
Just seeing Luke hanging around R2 (like Leia does in ANH) and seeing the little compartment close shut without seeing what was in it so not to spoil the surprise during the Barge scene.
And then cut into his "I can't do it Artoo..." line.
Would it be ok to paste some of this conversation into the Wishlist thread as if it can be done it would make either a nice full scene or an interesting deleted scene for a future edit of ROTJ?

See the interesting thing about this interview is the dig he has at Norman Harrison who is the "UK prop builder" referred to in this quote:
"Being candid, how the hell would a UK prop builder know anything about what we shot when, where, or how in the USA, and how would they know if any footage was ever lost?"
Some here may have seen the shot in Jambe's Returning to Jedi where the Harrisons produce their so-called screen-used original saber they "made" for this scene.It has been proved fairly recently that as I,and several others,always knew that the saber the Harrisons have and flaunt in RTJ is in fact a replica that they commissioned from an outside machinist and then attempted to sell as a screen original for five figure sums on numerous occasions through both their Elstree Props guise and on other auction venues.It is interesting to note the complete disdain Howard has for them.
Anyway as this is related to the topic at hand I thought you might all be interested as both this saber,and other fakes being sold by the Harrions relating to SW and Indy,have been of much note in the prop community of late.I've been saying it for years,particularly regarding the Luke reveal construction saber, but there you go.
