How do these compare with the 2006 Bonus Discs?

The 2006 Bonus Discs (aka the "GOUT") have much better detail than the Dr. Gonzo discs.  You can see the difference for yourself at the official screenshot comparison site.

Russs is right of course.  I'll add that it was an early DC pressing, missing the Leia welding bit

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Great discs - my first introduction to fan-made Star Wars DVDs. Of course the quality can't compare to later efforts (or indeed the GOUT-sourced stuff) but they're a lovely evocation of what Definitive Edition DVDs might have looked like.

I'd say the best now is the g-force/dark_jedi GOUT-sourced anamorphic trilogy that uses the image stabilization/anti-aliasing scripts.

I'm also kind of a fan of OCP's Classic Editions (they use the 2004 DVDs and a LD transfer to replace all the SE material). They're imperfect, but the idea of them is great. I hope someday someone fully realizes the idea by doing a 2004 DVD/GOUT hybrid (maybe using the g-force/dark_jedi GOUT project).

Frankly, I wouldn't bother with any of the LD transfers at this point (except maybe Arnie.d's V8/X9 transfer of the Japanese Special Collection that's in the works). The GOUT really kind of made all the DC/Faces LD transfers obsolete, IMO.

The G-Force/Dark Jedi transfer, is that the one based on the Japanese LDs, or is it based on the 1993s?

I've been trying to find the OCP classic editions, but no luck. Can't even really get them from him, for some reason. I was able to contact him, but he didn't feel like doing a trade.

Part of the reason I'm interested in the LD transfers is the features on the 1993 set. Have those been reissued ever? I'm also interested in them because I'm interested in getting preservations of all the different versions: the early LD/CED with the time compression and the missing 3PO line, the Japanese discs with the shrinking AR, the different audio mixes, etc., etc. Just a weird little hobby I decided to pick up. Plus, looking at the screenshot page, some of those preservations look a lot sharper than GOUT.

G-Force / Dark Jedi uses avisynth to greatly clean up the GOUT.  It's not a straight-up transfer.

As for extras, I don't know which this set had, sorry.

Here's more info (+ screenshots) of the g-force stabilization project. It's sourced from the GOUT, not LD:

No, the features on the '93 LD set have never been re-issued. There are some preservations of them, though. Rowman's bonus discs are one, Dr. Gonzo's Supplemental disc is another, there may be others.

Have you checked the Official DVD Index here?

Which screenshot page are you referring to? This one?:

I honestly don't see any LD screenshots that look sharper than the GOUT (more saturated, maybe).

Yeah, the Official DVD Index is the source of the largest part of my "Looking for" signature, and my list of preservations that I'm interested in. But there are, of course, many projects which aren't on the index, because of fanedits.com (which, for some reason, has far less than the Index.)

Maybe "sharper" wasn't the word I wanted. I'm careless with language sometimes, especially when it comes to this sort of thing. Maybe "better," or "better to me," was more where I was going with that. Less noise on some of them.

To be perfectly honest, I think you'd be disappointed with most of the LD transfers compared to the GOUT. The GOUT comes from the digital masters that were used to make the DC/Faces LDs, so by nature, they have less video noise than what would be introduced by even an excellent LD player. The only possible exceptions would be the X0 or X9 LD player, which in theory would produce an image equal to (or some say, better than) the GOUT.

Though, I personally have never seen one of these machines in person (they're VERY expensive, and rare) I understand there simply is nothing else to reveal every possible bit of quality from LDs.

Hey everybody!

The Gonze is an old friend of mine.  We lost touch over the years and I came across this thread while browsing the site.  Thanks to his kind and sharing nature, he mailed all the discs to me at a very tough point in my life.  I also did not have high speed Internet or anywhere near the knowledge I have now.  I helped him with some of the design aspects of the 2-disc Star Wars: The Making of a Trilogy and I am still proud of it to this day.  If anyone is still looking for any of his work, let me know and I'll gladly get to work on sharing via torrent.  There are 6 discs in all.  The 3 movies, supplemental, and SW:TMOAT.

You really should torrent it, JediTray.

Considering that it looks like we'll be getting nothing with the BluRay release, a chance for more people to have Dr. Gonzo's amazing set would at least be something positive.

You could go the private route with MySpleen or Demonoid, but an up to something more public like The Pirate Bay or Mininova, and I'd bet the torrent would last (seed) for years.

Hello everyone! I am from Italy, I hope you can forgive my simple English.

I downloaded the three main discs from this set back in October 2004 through Bittorrent, quite possibly from Suprnova.

Then, I made the stupid mistake of burning those onto three Fujifilm discs, and not to keep any backups (they seemed fine discs, never had a coaster...)

A few weeks ago I found out that each disc has lost an average of 350 Mb of data towards the end...

I know I should be content with my 2006 GOUT discs (which I bought, along with the 2004 SE discs, and the VHS SE tapes), but I'm terribly missing the THX intro, the menus, the easter eggs and the commentary track. These are really beautiful discs, and I love how they were made.

I managed to find the .torrent files for the main discs by googling "star wars" pre ld rip; I joined those and, through a couple of leechers, I was able to recover some of the lost data.

Unfortunately, there have been no seeds in sight for days (well, years, I'm afraid...)

Since Darth Hade, in the previous post, was suggesting to re-torrent these discs, I was wondering if anybody reading this could help me recover the lost parts by joining these torrents.

I'm at 95.6% for ANH, 95.3% for ESB, and 91.6% for ROTJ (bigger piece size, unfortunately), that should be no more than 300 Mb per disc.

I would like to post the torrent hashes I'm on, but I'm afraid it could be against the board rules, in some way. On the other hand, all the torrents I could find for these discs have no seeds, and the leechers have far less data, so it shouldn't be too difficult to find me...

My gratitude for this will be expressed by keeping these torrents alive until I can't see any leechers for a long time.

I know I'm in no position to ask a favour like this, since my mistake was simply too big, and I'll understand if no one will grant my humble request  :-)

Well, thanks for reading!
JJ

I think I can match the old suprnova hashes, if you'll send a PM...

Edit:
Found them!

I'll always have a place in my heart for this Gonzo set.
I found those on suprnova before ever joining this site.
The doctor really did a fantastic job, and they still hold up well today (if you're watching the old 20" tele in the basement ;)
Dr. Gonzo was ahead of his time when he boosted the color saturation beyond the DC source.

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Wan't there a fourth disc in the Dr. Gonzo set, a disc of extras?

I've got to go through some stuff to see if I still have these anywhere.

If I do, I'll try and upload torrents. If not, I'll ask around a few places and see if I can find anyone with all the discs if they might be willing.

Hello Darth Hade :-)

Thank you so much for answering!

I'm happy to say that Darth Mallwalker has already seeded to me the lost parts of my copies, and that I'm already seeding the three main discs. At snail speed, unfortunately, the ADSL lines in Italy are certainly not famous for their upload speed... But I'm willing to keep those seeded until I don't see any traffic for a long time.

And even then, if anyone sends me a PM, I'll be happy to seed them again.

The kindness of Darth went overscale: he offered to seed to me the fourth disc (the extras) as well! I am really speechless :-)

You too, of course, are too kind, far too kind. You people are marvellous :-)

Keeping the torrents seeded is the least I can do.

Oh, and I'm glad to see I'm not the only "crazy" person who still appreciates Dr. Gonzo's set even after the GOUT discs came out. I agree with Darth's last comment. (EDIT: oops, I just realized both your nicks begin with "Darth", of course I was referring to Mallwalker :-)
