Actually, I think I know how every means about the sound being a lot worse on the DVD release, than the original. Now I know nothing about sound, so I'm just guessing, but in the theater, when I saw it in 1999, right at the beginning, when the Trade Federation turns on the Jedi and the turret comes down and blasts the Republic ship in the hangar, my ears nearly got blown off for how loud and bassy it was. On the VHS and DVD I have, there's nothing of the sort, it's just a weak explosion sounds. It's not my set up or volume or anything, it's just missing that impact. Same with the pod race, that was amazing in the cinema, and a big part was how loud and powerful sounding the engines and explosions were. It's bleh on the DVD, nothing special.

Course, I'm likely to be talking rubbish here, but I thought I'd chip my limited experience with sound in TPM.
