This may have been mentioned before, but continuity-wise it's baffling that there were THREE types of battle droids (of which presumably thousands were built) around at the time of the Naboo blockade and Clone Wars, but none have ever been seen since. Did they all self-destruct at the end of the war?

I'd have preferred that an existing design, like IG-88 or this guy had been reverse-engineered for the prequels - in the case of the CZ droid I'm not even sure we see a working model in the OT, so it might have been cool to see them in their heyday as part of a formidable army (they sure look scary enough!)

Hello everyone!  Been lurking for at least a year but finally decided to join up.  ANH:R was amazing and I'm really looking forward to this one as well.

Sidious had a line near the end of ROTS where he told Anakin to send a message to shut down all droid units.  They were infinitely inferior to clones.  Presumably they were all sent to the junkyard.

Ady put one in the the Jawa Sandcrawler jump heap in ANH.

Are there gonna be any 'relics' from the Clone Wars among the junk pile in the scene where Chewie finds C3PO?

The IG-88 concept drawing looks so different:

Reminds me a lot of Maximilian from The Black Hole in some ways:

I don't doubt that Max inspired IG.  Black Hole came out in Dec '79, but  it's logical that artwork and photos had shown up prior to that.

will we see any more PT drops in ESB ?

A lone battle droid standing guard somewhere, a small pit droid working on ship repairs, a small spider droid doing welding work on the outside of bespin or a Hellfire droid pulling a cart of goods :p

Or some droid parts here and there?

Or perhaps back ground items from the prequels will be inserted into the ESB back ground? like paintings, lamps or statues?

I'd personally love to see one of those super battle droids (from AOTC and ROTS) broken up among the junk in the scene where Chewie finds C3PO :)

Ady has already said no more PT stuff in the OTR.  Sad, but true.

Ah, so it also excludes any slight visual 'homages'....

Oh well, I tried, but Ady's word is final and I respect that :)

I'd imagine that as a visual sign of reperations after the Clone Wars the Seperatist droids would have been re-programmed to work on reconstruction. I could also imagine that civilians of former Seperatist world would be used a slave labour along those lines too.

The Death Star being (as of the PT) a former Seperatist weapons project may have used Geonosian and Neimodian tech and machinery in it's construction (a bit like Project Paperclip).

Assuming that the same machines used to build the first Death Star built the second there could be a long legacy of PT tech in the OT era.

I can't see a place where it would fit into ESB:R though.

IG 88 was successful in tracking down the millennium falcon. It has been suggested in the EU that this IG88 was destroyed by Boba Fett on bespin. Or even in his ship I could imagine IG88 trying to sneak aboard and ninja kill him but Boba was not willing to let his bounty slip through his fingers. If ESB had been made in 2005 Boba would have had a battle scene with IG88. But thank god it was just a little nod. But it doesn't need to be painted because there is 4 IG88's in the star wars universe.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

That's more EU bullshit to "explain" why there's a droid that looks like IG-88 in the room where Chewie finds Threepio in pieces.  It's something that didn't need explaining, since it wasn't even the same color (come on, do you really think there's only one droid that looks like IG-88), but that's the EU for ya.

Don't forget the IG-88 that was moments away from taking over the second Death Star?????

On second thoughts....

It's really just a nerd problem and as a self confessed nerd it's not that much of a problem for me.

IG-88 looks like a single purpose piece of military (or paramilitary) kit so it seems a bit odd that there is one of his kind (whatever the colour) in a scrap yard on an industrial colony.

But then what is a slave boy doing building a protocol droid for his mother on a desert planet when she'd be better of with an ice-cream maker?

It may have cost too much to have an ice cream machine imported from Cloud City. Besides, maybe she really had a hankerin' for a prissy droid that spoke a ridiculous amount of languages. That would be really useful for a stay at home mom that did...I dunno, dirt sweeping all day? Milking blue cows?

I didn't say that. All I said is that they remind me of each other. ;)

I know.  All I'm saying is that I think that Joe Johnston or whoever did that sketch may have had Max on the brain.  The timing was about right - when Black Hole was being promoted and coming out, Empire was still in production.

I'm not implying that the droid should be recolored to look identical to IG-88, thus making it actually BE IG-88... just more metallic. IG-88 is more of a black metal color, correct? Perhaps this other droid could be more metallic gray or something. To me, the way it looks now, it looks like it will snap in half if it's knocked over by the wind! WHOOPS! Sorry Ugnaught, Lando will have to send Lobot to go buy a new one for ya.

Ohhh, I see. :) I think out of the IG-88 production sketch, the final product and Max, I like Max best overall. I like the legs on him, whereas I find the final IG-88 looks really...clumsy. (the feet look particularly awkward) There are bits of him I like, but overall, he looks like he was made out of a bunch of junk.

I wasn't responding to your post - in fact, I didn't even know you had one dealing with that subject!  In fact, I agree, it could use a bit of a touch-up ...

Yeah, it was more of a "connected" reply, since I brought up the topic first, then somehow the EU aspect of the two droids being one and the same came up, and then you replied to that, but the EU wasn't what I originally brought up... so what I said was true, from a certain point of view....

A cool but absolutely unnecessary add would be to have IG-88's "eyes" move independently of each other, similar to how they did in the 2-D Clone Wars cartoon (and I think also in the new CGI Clone Wars, if I recall correctly). But yeah, not an important change, just would be cool to see in a non-animated version.

I think you'll probably have a much easier time of it working on the PT in a few years, Adywan, not the actual workload, but the fan reactions. It must be pretty conscricting to work on the OT, since any single little change you make  will have a huge backlash from fans. Like that hullabuloo over the killing Lando thing, a lot of fans (including me, unfortunately) simply can't fathom the idea of actually changing the OT's story. I mean, I know it would proably be a lot better as a trilogy with a few story changes, but I'm way too engrained in it, I wouldn't be able to accept it the same as I would for any other fanedit. I mean, I know ROTJ has the weakest story of the three, and I know it's the weakest film of the three, and it is quite flawed in general, but I still love it regardless, it was my favourite as a kid (which was probably the point, Ewoks and dumb jokes and all that), so even trying to improve it plotwise, I can't really fathom.

So it must be really hard to deal with all the naysayers (like I said I didn't want to see the story changed, but I never actually said anything about it, that would be rude and ungrateful, it's still your edits, and you're doing these out of your own pocket after all).

The PT on the other hand, I, and most likely the majority of fans, couldn't give a toss about the original story/characters, so you can do whatever you like to them without all that backlash. In fact, I think it's clear you'll only be encouraged to slice it up and make something worthwhile out of it. Of course, it'll probably take a lot of work to tone down the flashiness of the trilogy, and reworking scripts, characters, music and plots won't be easy, but at least you'll have total creative freedom with them, which will surely be a relief. Sort of like you're given a blueprint, that you can modify however you see fit before building the house, and people will be pleased no matter what, so hated the original blueprint was. Thogh this is sort of off topic, and years away as it is.

P.S. Sorry to hear about the back problems, my dad has serious back problems so I know how crippling they can be for someone.

Don't you believe it!

There is a large amount of people who were 9 or 10 when TPM came out and see the original version as their PT in the same way that some people cringe at the idea of any dramatic changes to ROTJ.

Personally I find ROTJ just as troublesome as the PT (in some ways more so because it's the only blot on the OT where as the whole PT has so much that sets my teeth on end).

When Ady started ESB:R he thought it would be relatively straight forward compared with ANH:R but it looks like this time round there has been even more work put into it.
