so why does vader stop boba fett from firing at chewie when he starts to toss stormtroopers off the carbon freezing platform in cloud city?
Author

Because he wanted his hostages alive and didn't like Fett undermining his authority by acting on his own account (at least that's my $0.02).
Edit: And welcome to the boards, deadpossum.

If that was of any concern to him, he would have given orders to his troops not to shoot any protocol droids (Hehe, or equip some troopers with Jawa guns). I think if Vader had known that Boba Fett was made from the same "MoJo" as his Stormtroopers, he would probably never have interfered (it's almost a miracle 3P0 was hit in the first place).

Hey, it's Darth Vader we're talking about. Who knows? Maybe he even wanted to grab Fett's gun to shut up 3P0 personally. Search your feelings, you know it to be true!

Ive thought about this also. Mainly because after Vader stops Boba Fett from firing, and Han begins to calm Chewie, we see Leia look over at Vader, who simply stands and observes. Leia seems to sense that there must be a reason Vader did what he did. She then goes over to Han to say what could be her final words to him. Ive always wondered if Vader knew Leia was his daughter, or at least sensed there was something about her, and she should not be killed. Leia's importance to grand scheme of things, which would be revealed fully in JEDI, begins to show at that moment, followed shortly thereafter by her response to Luke's call for help, as he hangs underneath cloud city. Thats what I think anyway.

im not sure about that one... although i kinda like the idea of him seeing into the future through the force, and seeing that luke skywalker is hanging from the bottom of cloud city and sees that leia is needed to be able to help luke.
